The FDA sees the public health value in expanding the availability of COVID-19 testing through safe and accurate tests that may include home collection, and we are actively working with test developers in this space," the agency said in a release.The problem with the fake kits, other than being fraudulent, is they could delay consumers from seeking medical care. Anyone who believes they have symptoms resembling the novel coronavirus (which are fever, coughing, and shortness of breath) is asked to contact their medical provider, who will help determine if they need to be tested."We have already identified and issued warning letters to companies found selling and promoting fraudulent items, and we expect additional such actions will be forthcoming," the FDA said.Anyone who believes they have found a vendor selling fake testing kits can report them to the FDA. 1570

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Metropolitan Transit System has launched an initiative to keep their buses and trolleys clean and their riders and employees safe.MTS officials said their ridership has dropped 75 percent since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. Now, with officials are seeing a recent uptick in riders, the agency is implementing new health and safety measures.Nikki Jefferson has relied on the trolley to get to work for the last three years. When the cases of COVID-19 started popping up around San Diego County, she was nervous about getting back on board.“I still use hand sanitizer after my last stop, anytime I touch the button,” Jefferson said.To help control the spread of COVID-19, the MTS is now cleaning their 800 buses and 135 trolley cars twice a day. MTS is even using the deep-cleaning fogging technique to disinfect high-touch areas.Additionally, hand-washing stations are installed at their 54 transit stops and plexiglass barriers protect bus drivers from passengers.When on a bus or trolley, passengers are urged to practice social distancing whenever possible.Officials said all riders on buses or trolleys, and riders at stops or stations, will be required to wear face masks or coverings.MTS CEO Sharon Cooney said, “We’re going to educate all of our customers so that they know you can’t come on board without as mask for some kind of face covering.”It’s a move Jefferson agrees with as she spends most of her time riding the trolley.“It makes me feel safer and less of a chance that I’m going to catch COVID-19, since I have to go to work, but I don’t want to bring it to work with me or have it around me,” said Jefferson.MTS officials said they will educate the public about the face coverings. Some staff will also have face coverings on hand. But they add if someone refuses to wear one, they’ll look into issuing a citation.So far, 33 MTS employees have tested positive for the coronavirus; 22 have recovered and have returned to work. 1984

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The California Center for the Arts, Escondido will host drive-in live concerts and a movie series this month.The concerts and movie screenings will be held at the former Nordstrom parking lot at Westfield North County at 8 p.m. Spaces for more than 250 vehicles will be made available and spaced apart to keep listeners distanced.The scheduled shows start on Aug. 14 with a showing of the classic musical Grease and continue on Aug. 15 and 16 with a performance by Jersey Boys stars Christian Hoff and Travis Cloer. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Teachers are quickly adapting to online lesson plans to engage their students.Third grade teacher Carlisa Flanders said Friday was the first day she'd been back to school since Grant K-8 shut its doors March 13 due to coronavirus concerns.Flanders said the day the school closed was hectic and stressful, "we had a couple hours to hussle. I put together two weeks of work, took as much as I could went home and hunkered down."She was emotional thinking of the future, wondering when she was going to see her students again and when school would reopen.Tuesday was the day she was able to go online, using a program called Zoom, and video conference with her students. She said 18 of the 21 students have been attending school this week.Friday morning, their homework assignment was to bring one thing to share. Many of her students showed off their pets."The majority of my focus is going to be making sure I stay connected with my students, making sure they feel the love," she said, gesturing at a board behind her with the words, 'Good Morning! You are awesome! You are loved!' written in different colored markers.Flanders said right now class is optional and labeled as enrichment. She said Thursday she read a book to the kids.Parents, like mom Leona Smith, said the social interaction from class is exactly what her son has been missing, "that connection he has, and the bonds that he has with his friends and his teacher it's like no other.""I think we forget how much school and their friends and their teachers are part of their everyday life," Smith said.Mrs. Flanders has been working tirelessly to bridge boundaries with online education, "I am now texting, communicating with friends I now have in Georgia, in Texas, in Oregon who are also third grade teachers and I'm collaborating virtually with strangers but their hearts are in the exact same place as mine and we're all just like try this, try this, try this."She said her tech savvy students are also stepping up teaching her tricks, like starting a chat and sharing pictures through the program. 'Our first lesson was how to mute and unmute the microphone,' Mrs. Flanders said.Friday was emotional. Mrs. Flanders said she was glad to go back to school and see fellow teachers' cars in the parking lot, but could only wave hello from a distance. "I got to go back to school for 20 minutes, I got my charts, I got our class mascot, this is happy," she said holding a rainbow hedgehog stuffed animal. She said she also grabbed a large stack of books.She was also happy to get back a semblance of a routine, saying class will start online officially on April 27."Oh gosh, it's mind boggling to think how these grades will actually count towards them finishing the third grade year," Mrs. Flanders said concerned.She's focusing instead on each lesson and the positive impact she can make on her students."At the end of every school day I usually hug, high-five or fist bump my kids, so our first Zoom, we decided this is our new way of hugging," She said making an 'air-hug' gesture, "So to all of you here's a hug. We'll get through this."The San Diego Unified School District said schools will be soft launching online education April 6. That way they can connect students in need with computers and WiFi, so everyone is ready for the hard launch April 27. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Surveillance video captures a burglar on the move inside a popular restaurant in Mira Mesa, and his crimes may be escalating.Inside the kitchen of T.P. Bahn Bao on Camino Ruiz, the staff is busy making steamed Vietnamese buns, days after an unappetizing discovery. "Scared, anxiety, disbelief," said Travis Nguyen, who owns the restaurant.When she got in on Thursday morning, she found loose change all over and the drawer of the cash register gone. The surveillance video revealed what happened. Just before 3 a.m., a figure is seen crouched low, shining a flashlight into the restaurant. After a few moments, the man pries open the door and walks in."It appeared he used a homemade tool to break the panic bar. It took him only a few seconds to get in," said Lon Holliday of Convoy Street Locksmith, the company that repaired the door.In the video, the man quickly heads to the cash register, removes the drawer and about 0 in cash."He knows what he's doing. I think he's done this before," said Nguyen. After the thief is done in the front - and with a loud security alarm going off - the intruder heads towards the kitchen, where he looks around. He then goes into the walk-in cooler. He apparently doesn't like what he sees and takes off."He's in and out of the restaurant in under two minutes. He's quick," said Nguyen.
