NORTH PARK, Calif. (KGTV) - Peking Restaurant, a staple of the North Park food scene for 88 years, will close in March of 2019.The owners made the announcement on their Facebook page earlier this month, saying it was time to retire."I'm going on 75 years old," co-owner Ken Fong told 10News. "It's time to enjoy my last few years."The Facebook post says "This decision did not come lightly to us as Pekin is such a special place in our hearts and we love what we do and all of you. A majority of our incredible staff here have been with us 25-40 years... and are ready for the next chapter of retirement and new endeavors."Fong says it's not just the owners who want to retire, but cooks and servers as well.Since word got out about the closure, the restaurant has been flooded with people who want one more meal at a place that became the go-to spot for Chinese food in the area."It's overwhelming," says Fong. "It's driving us nuts. Everyone is overworked."Fond adds that he doesn't mind the extra work, but he didn't expect this kind of reaction.In the wake of the extra crowds, the restaurant put up a sign warning customers that wait times may take longer than usual. They say they don't want to add capacity, so they can give customers the same level of service they've always had.People in the area say it's sad to see such a great place go away."This is something I've known my whole life. I'm going to miss it," says Barbara Sims. She used to come with her parents as a child. Now she brings her grandkids to the restaurant when they visit.Fong says he appreciates all the well wishes he's received in the past few weeks."They all want to come back and have one last memory," he says. "So, thank you."The restaurant will stay open through the Chinese New Year in February and then close in March.Fong says several people and real estate groups have looked into buying it, but he doesn't know if the new owners will keep the location as a Chinese food restaurant or open something new. 2001

"There is a great amount of opportunity right now to snag a good deal on an apartment in Manhattan."The latest report from realtor Douglass Elliman found that the median price of a Manhattan apartment last month was ,100, down from ,500 last October.The savings are even steeper for smaller apartments."We've seen a 19% decrease in the prices of studios," Beauchamp said.Landlords are hoping to lure renters back to Manhattan after thousands moved out during the peak of the pandemic."The vacancy rate, last month I think was just under 6% and this month, we're over 6%," Beauchamp said.That adds up to 16,000 empty apartments in Manhattan, and the greatest share of those vacant apartments are downtown."I saw some incredible deals down in Tribeca over the summer that are still persisting right now," Beauchamp said.More than 5,000 new leases were signed in Manhattan last month, up 12% after a September slump.Many renters are finding more room across the East River."I think there is stronger demand in Brooklyn than the rest of the city," real estate agent Akil Rossi said.The Elliman report found Brooklyn leases surged in October to the second-highest October total in 12 years. New charges were filed late Friday against former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort in the special counsel investigation.Prosecutors allege that Manafort, with the assistance of longtime business partner Rick Gates, "secretly retained a group of former senior European politicians to take positions favorable to Ukraine, including by lobbying in the United States."The new indictment came less than two hours after Gates pleaded guilty to two criminal charges in federal court and pledged to cooperate with special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of Russia and the 2016 presidential election.Prosecutors say Manafort orchestrated a group of former European politicians, called the "Hapsburg group," to pose as independent voices. Yet they covertly pushed positions favorable to Ukraine as paid lobbyists. Manafort used offshore accounts to pay the former politicians 2 million euros.Manafort also allegedly used million from an offshore account to fund a report on the trial of a political opponent jailed by his clients. A lawyer involved in the report -- Alex van der Zwaan -- pleaded guilty to lying to investigators earlier this week.The new charges, which sweep up some information Gates has conceded to investigators and other information in charges filed Thursday in Virginia federal court, include money laundering, foreign lobbying violations and making false statements.Manafort has pleaded not guilty and maintains his innocence.Gates admitted in a guilty plea Friday that he and Manafort had sent letters to the Justice Department in November 2016 and last February that falsely asserted they hadn't lobbied on behalf of Ukraine in the United States. Andrew Cuomo announced Friday that all New York school districts were able to reopen for the next academic year.Cuomo said that his decision was based on infection rates across the state. He previously announced a state formula to determine whether or not schools will reopen.School districts have been developing reopening plans, with feedback from parents and teachers.However, according to the governor, of the 749 districts across the state, 127 have yet to submit reopening plans and 50 plans were incomplete.The Department of Health will continue to go over plans as the come in, the governor said.According to Cuomo, the Health Department can disapprove of a district's plans if they don't meet the proper safety measures, which could delay the opening of schools in that district.New York City Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza also unveiled updated school reopening plans this week, which requires teachers and students to be in masks the whole day.Class sizes have also been slashed to 12 or less students, while many areas like gyms and cafeterias are getting revamped to create makeshift classrooms.Disinfection and virus protection are some of the top areas of concern.New York schools have been closed since mid-March in an attempt to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus outbreak. 1323
