Officials say the premiums were deducted twice directly from beneficiary’s bank accounts.“They took out both my husband’s and my payment twice,” said Jacki Montierth.Montierth teaches tech seminars for seniors at Oasis Lifelong Learning Center in La Mesa, including about how to use their smartphones and computers to access financial and medical documents.She says, she closely monitors her account, but worries other people may not be as vigilant or even know how to check their statements.“I’m sure this will hurt many people on limited income and my bank says it may take a week to refund,” said Montierth.So far, officials say about 20% of the duplicated money has already been refunded. They said they are working to return the rest of the money by Wednesday, September 25.If the money has not been returned by then, Medicare officials claim the Treasury’s Bureau of Fiscal Service will begin reversing the rest of transactions to complete the reimbursement.Those who worry they have been overcharged can call 1-800-MEDICARE to report an issue. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 63-year-old man was hospitalized after being stabbed in Sherman Heights Saturday night.The stabbing happened on the 2200 block of Imperial Avenue around 8:30 p.m. Saturday.Authorities say the man was arguing with a 19-year-old when the teen stabbed him in the ribs below his armpit.RELATED: PB man stabbed six times, suspect apprehendedAfter the stabbing, the suspect fled the scene, police say. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - UC San Diego announced Monday a million gift from the John and Mary Tu Foundation, designated to help increase the number of people tested for COVID-19, as well as develop new ways to track and treat the virus.The award supports the clinical research activities of UCSD translational research virologist Dr. Davey Smith, who is "advancing new diagnostics, therapies and ways to monitor the spread of the virus," according to a university statement."What we are trying to do is save lives," John Tu said of the gift to create the John and Mary Tu Foundation COVID-19 Response Fund. "It's very simple: with this research, Dr. Smith is working on behalf of everybody, to save us, to save the world."At the onset of the pandemic, Smith and his team began to investigate methods that would increase the efficiency of testing as well as understand the disease process -- how the virus mutates and spreads within a population. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - UC San Diego announced Thursday that five years after it was destroyed in the Syrian civil war, the ancient Temple of Bel in Palmyra, Syria has been digitally reconstructed by the university library's Digital Media Lab using 3D methods and artificial intelligence applications.Inspired by a past collaboration between the library and UC San Diego's Levantine Archaeology Laboratory, the project resulted in the digital preservation of more than a dozen lost reliefs, sculptures, frescos and paintings, all made publicly available on the library's digital collections website.Destroyed in 2015, the Temple of Bel has been called one of the most important temples in the entire Middle East -- along with Lebanon's Baalbek -- and served as one of the best-preserved examples of ancient art and architecture, a statement from the library said. It attracts more than 150,000 tourists annually.Through the use of more than 3,000 publicly available digital photographs taken over the course of a decade, the library recreated the structure using Pointcloud, an online viewing platform."This project underscores the library's commitment to engaging in collaborative efforts to better understand how the university can support emerging teaching and research formats," said Roger Smith, interim associate university librarian for scholarly tools and methods at the UC San Diego Library. "It also allows the library to better plan for our role in acquiring, preserving and sharing scholarship while incorporating new media and data formats."The digital photographs used to create the virtual rendering of the Temple of Bel were sourced from open-access repositories such as the NewPalmyra project, the Roman Society, Oxford University and individual tourists, then populated into Pointcloud, which allows users to interactively explore the once- massive temple compound. Additionally, artificial intelligence applications were used to isolate the temple's important features from other elements that may have appeared in the images, such as tourists, weather conditions and foliage."This new technology has allowed the Library to combine image data from many different sources," said Scott McAvoy, manager of the Library's Digital Media Lab. "For example, a photo from a Polish tourist visiting in 2010 can be combined with a photo from a Japanese tourist visiting five years later to extract 3D features. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A California Highway Patrol officer was taken to the hospital Thursday after a crash on SR-163 near Interstate 5 in Balboa Park.The officer was driving south on the highway approaching I-5 when he saw a pedestrian on the right shoulder.He slowed his patrol vehicle to make contact but was involved in a collision with another car.CHECK TRAFFICCHP officials said the veteran officer was disoriented and taken to Sharp Hospital as a precaution. There’s no word on the condition of the other driver.The CHP was not sure why the pedestrian was on the highway.Officers shut down one lane of south 163, backing up traffic in the area. 655
