CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - A grateful South Bay mother says a "miracle" happened, after her missing son surfaced in a small Mexican town with no memory.Without a job, 37-year-old John Mooney ended up on the streets in the Chula Vista several years ago but he never lost touch with his mother."Always had contact with him. Not two or three days would go by without me seeing him," said Lynda Mooney, John's mother.John would visit Lynda at her Chula Vista home, where he stored his belongings. In late September, he stopped showing up.RELATED: Chula Vista: Victim carjacked, kidnapped by suspects disguised as officers"Very out of the ordinary. I was devastated and panicking," said Lynda.Lynda filed a missing persons report and searched."Anywhere you go, you look for him. Your imagination runs away from you. Every time you hear a siren, you are panicking," said Lynda. The agony of not knowing became her daily torture. A month and a half went by. Then came a surprise early this week.RELATED: Several high-end vehicles vandalized in Chula Vista neighborhood"Shocked, relief, and disbelief," said Lynda. She found herself staring at John's photo, shared with her from a viral post. A week prior, a mystery man had appeared in Ejido Neuvo Leon, a small Mexican town southeast of Mexicali, with no memory. He did not know his name and spoke only English, Lynda says. The locals fed and cared for him and the story of the stranger spread quickly. The San Diego-based California Advocates for the Missing created the Facebook post that went viral and within two hours, Lynda saw it. "Relief, frantic. Trying to figure out what's going on ... how to put the puzzle pieces together," said Lynda.RELATED: Testimony wraps in murder trial of Chula Vista man stabbed, stuffed in barrelLynda says she can't explain his amnesia. The outreach of help through them has been humbling. Don't have words to express what this means to me ... Such a relief to hear his voice," said Lynda.John has gotten a bit of his memory back, but remains reluctant to come home."We will keep at it. The question I keep asking is, 'How'd he get there?' I just want to bring him home," said Lynda. 2331

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The Sweetwater Union High School District is tightening its belt on the budget. On the table is a plan to not replace dozens of positions and cut bus routes. Critics say the move could leave hundreds of students without a ride to school. The board meets Tuesday night to finalize the plan to save money. One of the biggest moves on the table is not replacing some 80 positions within the district. Positions on the chopping block include assistant superintendent positions and nine bus drivers. No one within the district will be at risk of losing their jobs. Instead, the positions won’t be replaced after employees retire. Roughly 300 employees already chose to take an early retirement. The district also plans to eliminate 30 bus routes next school year that will save half a million dollars per year. Four of the districts 13 high schools will be affected by the route cuts. Several parents say they were blindsided by the news. "Out here we have year round schooling, so schools going to be starting for us in July. That’s just a couple months to figure out for parents that are working how they're going to change their schedules and if they can't then these kids are left to fend for themselves,” said Sara McIntosh. The district says Sweetwater is one of a few districts that still offers bus service. Many districts cut it years ago when the state stopped requiring it. It’s only required by law for special ed students. 1469

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Video shows a frantic rescue effort in Chula Vista after a car went off Interstate 5, leaving two adults and a child trapped upside down. “We got a kid! We got a kid! Oh my god,” said Jay Corona, one of the good Samaritans who rushed to help when they spotted the overturned car near H Street around 10 a.m. Corona and his girlfriend Priscilla Valdovinos were on their way to a salon when they came across the wreck. “I was shocked, I was nervous, I was scared, all that,” said Valdovinos. "Somebody's in there. Somebody's in there."Smoke was rushing from the muffler so furiously Corona thought the car would explode. He saw the family hanging upside down by their seat belts and was able to save a mother and her young child. However, the front door of the sedan was stuck. “It wouldn't open. Because it was really jammed. I just kept pulling and pulling, and then the next thing I know I yanked it open,” Corona said. “I got it open and [the grandma] was in the front seat like, traumatized. She was like, 'Help me please, my back is hurting.'” RELATED: Good Samaritan recovering after getting hit by carValdovinos and Corona said the sedan hydroplaned in wet weather. With the help of other drivers, Corona escorted the grandmother back to the roadway. She was shaken up, but not seriously injured. Corona, who works as a security guard at a North Park bar, says his training kicked in. “I was very proud. He makes me proud every day! I fall in love with him every day, but today I told him, this is one that I'll remember,” said Valdovinos. The couple was struck by how many other people stopped to help. RELATED: Good Samaritans rescue woman from flipped SUV on San Diego freeway“It was like a giant team effort in San Diego,” said Corona. “In a time of need it was nice to see people come together and everything end up okay,” Valdovinos added.According to the CHP, the child was taken to the hospital as a precaution. 2150
