SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The county's average price for a gallon of gas eclipsed for the first time since May 22, according to AAA.The average price of regular gas in San Diego spike 9 cents Saturday and has risen 10 of the last 12 days for a total of 35.8 cents, according to AAA.Since last month, the average price is up more than 40 cents.MAP: Click here to find the cheapest gas in your areaIn California, however, the statewide average sits at .95 a gallon. The national average rests substantially lower, at .65 a gallon.The rise in gasoline prices has been attributed to several issues at refineries in California and just weeks after attacks on Saudi Arabia oil fields. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Chicano Federation is once again calling on San Diego County officials to do more to help curb the high numbers of COVID-19 among Latinos. On Wednesday, the organization released a statement regarding county numbers breaking down the number of contact tracing hires by ethnicity. Of the county's recent hires, 144 are Latino or Hispanic, that makes up 25.5% of the hires. Chicano Federation President and CEO Nancy Maldonado said county officials had told them they would hire people from within the community, that spoke Spanish, to serve as contact tracers. However, in Wednesday's statement, Maldonado said, "They lied." Maldonado has been an outspoken critic of the county and their response to how COVID-19 is disproportionately affecting Latinos. Data from the county shows there are roughly 34% of Latinos in the county, but they make up 61% of the positive cases. During Wednesday's county press conference, Supervisors Greg Cox and Nathan Fletcher each addressed the concerns. Fletcher said the county's goal is to have contact tracers who match not only the demographics of the population, but also the demographics of the positive cases. Fletcher added that they are doing outreach to get more applicants and also more Spanish speakers. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The countdown has begun for St. Patrick's Day in San Diego. The Gaslamp District is heavily bedazzled with sparkly green decorations. Many people said they are ready to party.Niamh Thornton is a 24 year old Irish student, now living in San Diego. “Niamh is pronounced like “Christmas Eve,” but with an “N” like “Neev”… It’s Irish,” Thornton said.She has been working at the Field Irish Pub in the Gaslamp District since last June."It's called an Irish Mule… It's lovely,” she said, pointing at a popular drink at the pub.The Irish native was getting ready for a 10-hour shift at the Field Saturday. "It's going to be crazy, I'd say,” Thornton said. Crazy may be an understatement.Saturday, many blocks downtown will be closed from sunrise to sunset-- for the morning Shamrock Run, the daytime parade, and shamROCK, the evening concert. Plus, many will be staring at the television screens, screaming for their favorite Irish teams. “England vs. Ireland in the rugby,” she said. ”And six nations. That’s insane. So this place is going to be packed.”But some people just could not wait to pre-party. Many people we saw in Downtown were showcasing their green accessories and outfits. Some were fully dressed up as lucky leprechauns. Kristin Ventura was showing off her Irish American pride with her co-workers at the Field Irish Pub. She said it is the one day of the year that anyone can be an honorary Irishman."Everyone is a little bit Irish,” Ventura said. “Deep down inside, there is that little spunk in you."Thornton said that spunk comes from St. Patrick himself, who legend said, saved the island from a slithery invasion."He got rid of snakes in Ireland,” Thornton said. “So that's why there are no snakes in Ireland."That was the start of the St. Patrick’s Day celebration for everyone — even for those on the other side of the planet. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Confederate monument at the center of an emotional debate has been removed from inside a city-owned cemetery in San Diego."It's a relief. I'm glad," said Amanda Bergara.Amid the recent protests aimed at racial injustice, Bergara was one of nearly 2,800 people to sign an online petition calling on San Diego's mayor to take down a confederate monument from inside Mount Hope Cemetery."It's a symbol of hate and disrespect for those who fought with their lives to end slavery," said Bergara.RELATED: Online petition seeks removal of Confederate memorial in San Diego cemeteryBuried in the cemetery are both Union and Confederate soldiers, who later lived in San Diego. The memorial, erected in 1948, names General Stonewall Jackson. In June, ABC 10News discovered the stone on the monument heavily damaged, with vandalism an ongoing issue. Unlike other Confederate markers removed in San Diego, the plot on which the monument sits is privately owned, and the city has maintained its hands are tied. The owner, United Daughters of the Confederacy, and supporters have said such markers are monuments to history.In the end, a city spokesperson says it was removed weeks ago at the request of the Confederate group, presumably to protect it from vandals. The monument is being stored by the city."Hopefully ending the hurt and pain for those who would have seen it and felt that hurt and pain. I hope it never sees the light of day," said Bergara.Not all the hurt is gone. A flagpole remains, along with a marker that includes the name, Stonewall Jackson. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The family of a teenage woman shot and injured at Sunset Cliffs updated her condition Friday.The unidentified 19-year-old victim was shot twice and left to die on the stairs near the ocean, a GoFundMe account set up by her aunt reported.A person walking near Ladera Street and Sunset Cliffs Blvd. found the woman bleeding the morning of April 12 and called police.
