SOLANA BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) - A small business landlord is giving his tenants some much-needed relief during the Coronavirus Pandemic. He's waived rent for April."Business is difficult in good times. It's especially difficult in bad times," says Daniel Powell, who is the landlord for 17 small businesses in the popular Arts District along South Cedros Avenue. "I think that what we can do together is more than we can do apart."Powell says he felt it was the "right" thing to do. His tenants say it's a reflection of the kind of person he is."His generosity and his action reminded me of what this is all about," says Carly Blalock, the owner of an interior design firm in Solana Beach. "It's about taking care of one another right now.""I have huge gratitude for him," says art dealer Lorna York. "I didn't know how I'd make it, and how I'd pay my rent. I have no income."Powell says he hasn't thought about May rent yet. He also added he didn't do this to pressure other landlords. He feels everyone needs to do what's best for themselves and their tenants."I just think that it's all about being as true to yourself as you can," he says. "And doing acts of kindness. SILVER SPRING, Md. -- For Habibah Jackson, the path to a healthier life may look like a personal journey, with only her dog, Rocky, for company.It’s anything but.“They like to say, ‘Oh, you're a walking group.’ We’re so much more than a walking group,” she said. “We like to say we're a ‘walking movement.’”Jackson helps lead neighborhood walks for GirlTrek, a nonprofit group of nearly 800,000 African American women taking one step at a time, together.The pandemic changed it a bit. So, to unite all of the now-solo walkers across the country, GirlTrek’s Ebony Andrews said the group launched a podcast, called Black History Bootcamp, focusing on African American women’s history.“Our focus is to help save the lives of Black women by inspiring them to take charge of their self-care, to own their joy, to claim what's their best lives,” Andrews said. “And one of the primary ways we do that is through encouraging community and encouraging walking.”It’s a move that can make a difference. According to the CDC, Black women are at high risk for heart disease and stroke and three times more likely than white women to die in childbirth. Some studies have linked those health effects for African American women to chronic stress, due to experiencing racism.GirlTrek seeks to counteract that.“Walking helps with stress. Walking is also something that requires limited resources. It's putting one foot in front of the other and getting out the front door,” Andrews said. “We have a saying that we say within our office that, ‘When women walk, things change.’”It’s something Jackson sees, too.“If you look at the social change that's happening now, imagine if you weren't in shape enough to walk - how could you actively protest if you're not physically able to keep a stance?” Jackson said. “People are walking for eight hours. Some motorcycles for the Tempe Police Department are now equipped with upright mounts for semi-automatic rifles.Sergeant Ronald Elcock said the department tested the mounts last year and decided to install them on eight of its motorcycles.In a high-risk situation, Elcock says motorcycles can usually get to a scene much quicker than patrol cars.However, until now, motorcycle officers were only armed with handguns.Elcock said that's been a growing problem, because criminals are using more high-powered rifles and weaponry."We don’t want to go into those situations where we aren’t able to keep the public safe,” said Elcock.Even though the AR-15s are highly visible on the back of the motorcycles, Elcock says they are secured with special technology.“There's a locking mechanism that would prevent anyone, except for the operator, to be able to get at the equipment,” said Alcock.Some worry about the militaristic look of the AR-15s mounted on the back of the motorcycles.“There are people that may be scared to see it,” said Elcock. "However when we explain to them the reason why we have it I think it puts them a little bit more at ease." 1153
