Named the Robo-Dome, it is where visitors could see a pair of 700-pound robots gliding in a high-tech arena under artificial stars.The Robo-Dome is used to simulate complex maneuvers that could be used for future space missions.The year 2011 is an exciting year for JPL's robotic explorers. In the past twelve months, two spacecraft made close encounters of comets. BEIJING, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- China's recent revocation of a national scientific award due to academic fraud has been welcomed by the public, but experts warn the country still has a long way to go to bring an end to such dubious academic practices.On Feb. 1, China's Ministry of Science and Technology, revoked the State Scientific and Technological Progress Award (SSTPA) given to Li Liansheng, former professor of Xi'an Jiaotong University in 2005.An investigation found Li had plagiarized others' works and fabricated data in his winning project, a research on key technologies for designing and manufacturing scroll compressors. Li was investigated after the science ministry received tip-offs from six professors (including four retired) in his university.The ministry subsequently canceled his prize and retrieved the money awarded.Zhao Baojing, a senior official with the National Office for S&T Award, told Xinhua it was the first time China had withdrawn a national scientific honor.The revocation soon sparked pubic discussion over academic integrity. Tan Gang, a citizen in Shenzhen, wrote on his microblog, "Though the revocation came a bit late, it is progress. SAN FRANCISCO, May 4 (Xinhua) -- Intel Corp. on Wednesday announced that it will mass-manufacture chips using new transistors featuring a three-dimensional (3-D) structure, calling it a technical breakthrough in microprocessors.The 3-D transistor, called Tri-Gate, represents a fundamental departure from the two-dimensional planar transistor structure that has powered computers, mobile phones and other modern electronics, Intel said."Intel's scientists and engineers have once again reinvented the transistor, this time utilizing the third dimension," Paul Otellini, Intel's chief executive officer, said in a statement.Intel on Wednesday also demonstrated a 22-nanometer (nm) microprocessor, codenamed "Ivy Bridge," which will be the first high-volume chips to use the new 3-D transistors.Ivy Bridge is scheduled for high-volume production readiness by the end of this year, the company said.According to Intel, the 3-D transistors enable chips to operate at lower voltage with lower leakage compared to previous transistors, providing up to 37 percent performance increase at low voltage versus the company's 32nm planar transistors.The gain means that the new 3-D transistors are ideal for use in small handheld devices, which operate using less energy to " switch" back and forth, Intel noted.

BEIJING, Feb.9 (Xinhua) -- China's State Council, the nation's cabinet, pledged Wednesday to step up efforts to boost grain production as relentless droughts continue to wreak havoc in north China's wheat growing regions.To encourage farmers to plant more and increase production, China will increase minimum purchase prices for grain produced in 2011 by up to 21.9 percent from that in 2010, according to a statement released after a State Council executive meeting presided over by Premier Wen Jiabao.The purchasing prices for japonica rice will rise 21.9 percent to 128 yuan (19.4 U.S. dollars) per 50 kilograms this year, while prices for early and middle-late indica rice will increase 9.7 percent and 10.3 percent to 102 yuan and 107 yuan per 50 kilograms respectively.Further, the central government will allocate 1.2 billion yuan to subsidize the purchase of anti-drought technologies for winter wheat-growing regions.According to the statement, the government has already allocated 4 billion yuan for rural water conservation projects and another 2 billion yuan will be allocated for farm irrigation systems and safe drinking water projects.The government had also pledged to fund 2,000 professional groups in insect-prevention in the worst-hit counties, the statement said.China's main wheat-growing regions, including Shandong, Henan, Hebei, Anhui, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Gansu and Jiangsu provinces, have been plagued by ongoing droughts since last year.

Almost half of connections are of 256 mbps.
