INTERACTIVE MAP: See where the Hill Fire is burning in Ventura County(KGTV) — Fire crews battled back flames from the Hill Fire burning near Thousand Oaks overnight Friday.The blaze has burned more than 4,500 acres and contained to 70 percent as of Sunday morning. On Friday, crews had estimated the fire to have burned about 6,100 acres.While low humidity and high winds have made fighting the nearby Woolsey Fire difficult, crews Friday encountered minimal active fire activity with the Hill Fire, according to the Ventura County Fire Department.At least one firefighter has been injured fighting the fire, and several hundred structures have been threatened. It’s the news glioblastoma patients in St. Lucie County feared they’d hear: There are more cases than they knew of.This week Scripps station WPTV in West Palm Beach, Florida reported on 11 glioblastoma cases in the Fort Pierce-area, discovered through word of mouth from the patients and their families.For two days, more people wrote to WPTV, telling us about other people they know with the disease, which affects just 13,000 people each year in the U.S.When WPTV broadened the focus area to include all of St. Lucie County, our number now increased to roughly 30 cases over the last five years. Several more cases date with the few years previous to that.The Florida Department of Health confirms it is monitoring their concerns and considering how to move forward.The Florida Department of Health in St. Lucie County has also met with some of the Glioblastoma patients and families.Patients like Kevin Perry say they never anything about the disease.“You hear about cancer all the time, but Glioblastoma? No,” Perry said.He was diagnosed in 2016 shortly after he had a seizure.“Some days you feel like you’re brand new. Other days you feel like its all over you,” Perry said.Perry’s wife, Ronna, is among the now dozens of local families wanting to know if their cases warrant a bigger investigation.I would like to know if there’s something going on. Or, is it just getting more prevalent.”Thursday, when WPTV’s glioblastoma count was around 13, we spoke with Dr. Chaim Colen, a neurosurgeon who has treated some of the local patients.“It’s definitely high. In what is normally quiet Cajun country, the sound of shoveling sand rises above all else right now.“Just filling a few sandbags to make sure that we get any water intrusion through the doorways of house,” said Joe Soudelier, who was filling 28 sandbags in Morgan City, Louisiana.In this region of the state known as Acadiana, there are worries about water coming in courtesy of Hurricane Laura.There are many shrimp trawlers visible along the Louisiana coast. About an hour west of Morgan City, people in Iberia Parish, and in other nearby parishes make a living off the water. Now, though, the water that supports their livelihood is a potential threat to their lives.Storm surge along the Louisiana coast could be more than 10 feet in spots. Coupled with strong winds, they are dual concerns with Hurricane Laura.Still, many here won’t evacuate, like Shannon Zeringue, who lives in a trailer.“It’s been there for like 30 years,” she said. “Kind of sunk in the ground. So, I think I'll be okay.”There are shelters open for residents, but Zeringue worries about exposure to the coronavirus. She is counting on sandbags for protection and said she regrets the last time she evacuated.“One year we left and we spent all kind of money going and doing everything and it was like - it was just a waste of money,” Zeringue said. “We could’ve just stayed.
