Leavenworth Police Chief Pat Kitchens says an active-duty solider at Fort Leavenworth helped stop an active shooter Wednesday on the Centennial Bridge over the Missouri River. In a news conference, Kitchens said the incident started on the Kansas side of the bridge. That's when a 34-year-old soldier from nearby Ft. Leavenworth stepped in and "saved the day" by striking the suspect with his vehicle, according to Kitchens."He saved countless people," Kitchens said.Kitchens said the suspect, described as a Platte County, Missouri man, was armed with at least a handgun and a semi-automatic rifle and was firing seemingly at random at cars on the bridge after getting out of his car.The suspect was injured in the crash with the soldier and was taken to an area hospital with non life-threatening injuries.Another active-duty solider from Fort Leavenworth, was struck by the suspect's fire. That soldier's injuries were also not life-threatening.The soldier that stopped the shooter was not injured.Initially, police responded to the bridge around 11 a.m. on a possible road rage incident. The shooting incident was contained to the bridge and all parties have been detained. The Missouri Department of Transportation said the Centennial Bridge, which connects Leavenworth with Platte City, Missouri, has been closed for the investigation. 1348

Jefferson County Judge Jeff Branick confirmed that thousands of his county's residents remain evacuated on Thursday following a fire and explosion at an industrial plant Port Neches, Texas. The fire remained active on Thursday, one day after a pair of explosions at the plant rocked the town of Port Neches. The explosions could be felt from up to 30 miles away, and blew out windows near the plant. Branick said that the situation was improving on Thursday, but that "doesn't mean we shouldn't exercise great caution."A 4-mile radius was evacuated from the plant amid fears of further explosions. Branick told reporters on Thursday that officials plan to visit the site of the plant on Friday as residents spent a second night forced from their homes. Branick said that the fire at the plant wasn't being controlled, but officials were working to contain the inferno. "The firefighters are doing an incredible job for their community," Branick told reporters. Despite the size and scope of the explosions, only three people suffered injuries, and no fatalities were reported.Officials continue to monitor the air quality near the plant. The real-time air monitoring results continue to show no actionable levels above state and federal regulatory guidelines, officials said. TPC Group operates the manufacturing plant. The plant processes C4 hydrocarbons, producing butadiene and raffinate and stores MTBE. The incident began at a tank with finished butadiene. Butadiene is used in the production of synthetic rubber used for tires and automobile hoses. The plant employs 175 people, and roughly 30 were on site at the time of the first explosion. The plant makes products for chemical and petroleum companies. All personnel are fully accounted for, TPC Group said. 1776

Jay Sekulow, an attorney for President Donald Trump, said Monday he does not want the written answers the President submitted to special counsel Robert Mueller to be released, describing them as "confidential.""Well, that would not be a position that I would want, to just make a statement where we would release confidential communications that took place between the President of the United States and the Department of Justice or the special counsel's office," Sekulow told CNN's Alisyn Camerota on "New Day."Sekulow continued, "as a lawyer, you don't waive privileges and you don't waive investigative detail absent either a court order or an agreement between the parties. And you'd have to weigh a lot of factors there on how that affects other presidencies."Sekulow called such a move "very inappropriate," and added that it'll "be a decision (Attorney General William Barr) makes, but I've some strong opinions about that."On Sunday, Barr delivered a summary to Congress detailing the principal conclusions of Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. For months, Mueller's team had requested a sit-down interview with Trump, but the President's lawyers refused to commit and negotiations continued. Eventually, the special counsel submitted written questions to the President last fall concerning the time frame before the 2016 election, which Trump answered in late November.Barr's letter to Congress stated that Mueller did not find that the Trump campaign conspired with Russia to influence the 2016 election and said that based on the report, Barr and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein determined there was not enough evidence to prosecute the President for obstruction of justice. 1740

Independence Day fireworks bring joy to millions of Americans over the week of July 4. It is a holiday that Americans unite to celebrate their independence. But celebrating America's independence could cause trauma for those who have fought for America's independence. The Department of Veterans Affairs estimates that between 11 and 20 percent of those who served in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars return home with PTSD. The V.A. said that 12 percent of Desert Storm veterans and 15 percent of Vietnam War vets also have PTSD. While a number of instance can trigger someone to have PTSD, the loud bangs that fireworks cause can be of particular concern for combat veterans. The V.A. says that PTSD can cause veterans to have upsetting memories, feel on edge, or have trouble sleeping. Since 2015, the non-profit group Military with PTSD has distributed yard signs informing neighbors that a veteran with PTSD lives nearby. The signs state "Combat Veteran Lives Here, Please Be Courteous with Fireworks."The signs are distributed nationwide, and can be ordered online. “Courteous to me means remembering that you are not the only one living in your neighborhood," said Jon Dykes, the veteran who made the first sign. "America celebrates our independence on the 4th of July. Not the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th, and 7th of July. Some fireworks are expected, and that’s OK. I understand; but not 24 hours a day.”For more information on how to obtain a sign, click 1468
