SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego artist wants to paint murals around the city that she hopes can help bring an end to gun violence."My concept is just something beautiful that people can take a picture in front of and just really enjoy the artwork of it but also take a message away from it," says Hanna Daly.Her concept is a series of artworks that look like colorful doorways. Each will have a message written above them, like 'Thoughts and Prayers Aren't Enough.""I thought it could be, like, a doorway to change," Daly says. "You walk away from it thinking, maybe there's a little something I can do. Like a doorway you step through it and now you're part of the cause."Daly became part of the cause last year, when her brother comitted suicide. He had shot himself in the head."Then a few weeks after that was Las Vegas," she says. "And then another shooting and another. It just kept hitting me, so I finally thought I should do something."Daly is working with with the Brady Campaign and Moms Demand Action on the project. She has the designs, just not the space to paint them."We need some people with some great walls out there that are visible, on main drags, where people are going to see it, where we can create some beautiful art, but that has a strong message," she says.She's hoping to paint the murals in high traffic areas like the Gaslamp District or along the boardwalks near beaches. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A new scam appears to target local Amazon customers worried about being victims of package theft.Neighbors at the Escala community in Mission Valley say package thefts have been an ongoing problem for the last few years.Could the trend be providing fuel for a scam? A recent encounter at the housing complex could point to a new method by scammers.Adriana Alberdi, who has lived at the complex for a decade, said she and other residents received an email from the property management company describing a recent visitor.According to the email, the man — described as blond and in his early 20s — was wearing a lanyard connected to a tablet. He had business cards and claimed to work at Amazon. At one point, the man went to the on-site office pushing to install an Amazon Key device in homes. The new service allows Amazon to gain access to a home or car to deliver packages and keep them from getting stolen.The email says the man was "pushy" and "argumentative," before finally leaving. Amazon confirmed the man was not an employee."It's like you're getting robbed of your security. You don't know who to trust anymore," said Alberdi. "This is new. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego couple is doing all they can to bring joy to hundreds of kids living in orphanages and shelters around the county.And despite the pandemic, they have donated thousands of stuffed animals to little ones in need.Charles and Linda van Kessler, with Passion 4 Kids, have donated 5,000 stuffed animals this year to kids in orphanages and shelters around the county."They need so much more and deserve so much better," Linda van Kessler said. "For these kids, it means a lot. It's something that's theirs. Something that gives them unconditional love."More than half of Passion 4 Kids' donations have been delivered in the past month. The couple says the kids cling to their new toys like a security blanket, of sorts."They are just so craving for love and someone to care about them and play with them. Most of the time we end up in tears because it's just so heartbreaking," Linda said.Charles says he knows the power of giving comfort first hand. He spent nearly 10 years in an orphanage in Amsterdam during World War II."I saw my family snatched away for the nazis. So I ended up in a state orphanage for 8 years, of abuse. I ran away and when I came to America I immediately decided to create a charity," Charles van Kessler said.And the pandemic has taken a toll on children. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man is searching for the good Samaritan who pulled him from a rip current in La Jolla this week.Patrick Fitzpatrick was swimming at Windansea Beach Tuesday."It took a snap second before I was in control to completely out of control," Fitzpatrick recalled, after becoming caught in a rip current. "There was no way on Earth that I was going to live from this. I was in a panic. I couldn't use my arms and legs now."Someone on shore, only known as "Dustin," noticed Fitzpatrick struggling and swam out to help him."He's a guardian angel. He owe him my life, he saved my life," Fitzpatrick says.Dustin swam out and kept Fitzpatrick calm before more help could arrive and get him to shore.Fitzpatrick is hoping to reunite with his mystery rescuer to say thank you."The humanity that comes from an act of kindness like this, from a perfect stranger," Fitzpatrick said. 892

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man shot his wife and four sons at a Paradise Hills home Saturday, killing four, before taking his own life.Sunday morning, a GoFundMe set up by the victims' family identifies those killed as Sabrina, the mother, and her children, 3-year-old Enzi, 5-year-old Zuriel and 11-year-old Zeth. According to the page, 9-year-old Ezequiel is still in the hospital. The father was identified as Jose Valdivia, 31, according to City News Service. San Diego Police were called to the 2100 block of Flintridge Dr. just before 7 a.m. Police said the dispatcher could not communicate with the caller, but could hear an argument and someone being asked to leave in the background.Officers received another call en route to the home from a neighbor who said they heard arguing and what they believed to be a "nail gun firing." Police arrived and saw a young boy covered in blood inside the home. Three other boys, their mother, and their father were found inside with apparent gunshot wounds. A 3-year-old and the 29-year-old mother were pronounced dead at the scene, according to SDPD Lt. Matt Dobbs. The boys' 31-year-old father, believed to be the shooter, was also among the dead.A 5-year-old, 9-year-old, and 11-year-old were rushed to a nearby hospital. Two of those children have died and the other was taken into emergency surgery in critical condition, according to police.Officers had initially told media the 5-year-old and 9-year-old boys had died and the 11-year-old boy was in surgery, but said during Saturday's press conference they could not confirm which child was in critical condition.Police said the shooting was related to domestic violence and called it a "murder-suicide." A restraining order was filed Friday by the mother against the father, but isn't believe to have been served as of Saturday. Police said the father may have been aware of the order.Saturday morning, police said the father came to the residence and got into an argument with his wife, before using a handgun to shoot his family and then himself.The four boys and their mother lived on the property with several other relatives, police said. The father was not currently living at the property and the couple was going through some type of divorce process.Police confirmed officers were called to the property to break up an argument between the mother and father earlier this month, but no crime was committed."I just pray for that family," one neighbor said.
