GUANGZHOU, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao lit the Asian Games torch from a specially designed cauldron in Beijing's Temple of Heaven Tuesday morning, marking the official start of the month-long relay for the 16th Asian Games.The torch relay will cover Beijing, Harbin, Changchun, Shandong's Haiyang, and 21 cities in southern Guangdong Province before arriving at the Asian Games opening ceremony in Guangzhou on November 12.Guangzhou, capital city of Guangdong, has been preparing itself for the games for the past six years, after it won the bid to host the Games in July 2004.The construction of the venues and the Asian Games Village has been completed. BEIJING, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- China's water resources imbalances between the north and south may worsen due to global climate changes and economic activities, said Vice Minister of Water Resources Hu Siyi.Typically, China's north is dry while its south has abundant water supplies.China will face unprecedented challenges in saving water in the next five-year plan from 2011 to 2015, said Hu at a national water-saving meeting in Zhengzhou, capital of central China's Henan Province, late September.Compared with the 1956-1979 period, rainfall in the Yellow River, Huaihe River, Haihe River and Liaohe River vallies in the 1980-2000 period had dropped six percent on average and river and lake water resources decreased 17 percent in these areas, according to figures from the Ministry of Water Resources.China's accelerated urbanization has pushed up demand for water.If the population in Beijing keeps on climbing, the water brought by the near completed South-to-North Water Diversion Project would not be enough, Hu said.China's water-saving targets during the 12th five-year plan from 2011 to 2015 include a 30-percent cut in water use for every 10,000 yuan (1,490 U.S. dollars) of gross industrial output, Hu said.

BEIJING, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- China welcomed the World Trade Organization's (WTO) ruling that United States imposition of anti-dumping and countervailing duties on four types of Chinese imports was inconsistent with WTO regulations, the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) said Saturday.The four categories of Chinese imports include standard steel pipe, rectangular steel pipe, laminated woven sacks, and off-road tires, according to an online statement posted on the MOC's website.In a report released Friday, the WTO's dispute settlement body found that the U.S. department of Commerce had acted inconsistently with WTO rules on five elements of the case, which China filed to the WTO in 2008.The U.S. should conduct trade remedy investigations strictly in accordance with the WTO regulations, an unnamed official from the MOC's Department of Treaty and Law said in the statement.However, China was also concerned over some views and rulings made by the WTO expert panel, and would handle issues such as complaints according to WTO disputes settlement procedures, said the official.
