The city of El Paso, Texas is trying to find ways to heal following a mass shooting that killed 22 members of the close-knit community.Everyone is looking for ways to help the grieving community. One aspiring political cartoonist is evening putting politics aside and is doing his part to bring the community together.“It’s just so sad to see something so tragic happen in our city,” says Michael Nunez, an artist from El Paso. Nunez is using his grief to create what he knows best. “It’s not so much that I don’t have emotion,” he says. “It’s that it’s contained, and it has to come out some way and it always out in art.” Nunez began drawing. “Once I knew everyone was OK that I knew, immediate family, I just started drawing,” he says. “The first thing that came to my head was the amigo man crying, but then it grew into two other people the mascots.” He says the artwork represents the El Paso people.“It shows the community coming together, not just one mascot but multiple mascots,” he explains.For Nunez, this cartoon isn’t about politics. “It was emotional. It was a sentiment. It was a concept that I felt captures what we were feeling as a community, coming together and mourning,” he says. Nunez believes healing can be drawn from art.“As a community, everybody gravitates towards it because it’s exactly what they’re feeling,” he says. “They can relate to it.”Art has no borders, and Nunez hopes it can start to draw a bridge to a different discussion. “Hatred like that is ignorant,” he says. “The way to correct that is to open our eyes.”Nunez plans to sell his art for t-shirts and plans to donate all the funds to the families affected by this tragedy. 1683

The man suspected of killing 20 people and injuring 26 others in El Paso on Saturday may face hate crime and capital murder charges, officials said.Police say a document they believe was written by the 21-year-old white male suspect has a "nexus to a potential hate crime."The four-page document posted online espouses white nationalist and racist views. It rails against immigrants and Hispanics, blaming immigrants and first-generation Americans for taking away jobs and for the blending of cultures in the US."Right now, we have a manifesto from this individual that indicates to some degree he has a nexus to a potential hate crime," El Paso Police Chief Greg Allen said at a press conference.FBI El Paso Special Agent in Charge Emmerson Buie said more investigation is needed before determining that the mass shooting was a hate crime."Right now, it is a murder investigation," Buie said. "There is potential for a number of different other violations, and we're reviewing all the evidence to make a determination as to what potentially else is out there, in addition to the violations that have been stated that the local authorities are pursuing."The suspect has been identified as Patrick Crusius of Allen, just outside Dallas, three sources told CNN. Two federal law enforcement sources and one state government source confirmed the suspect's identity.The suspect surrendered to police "without incident," police spokesman Sgt. Robert Gomez told reporters.The document police believe the suspect wrote was posted on 8chan, an online messaging board full of racist, bigoted and anti-Semitic content. The Houston Astros fired assistant general manager Brandon Taubman on Thursday for directing inappropriate comments at female reporters during a clubhouse celebration, announcing the decision in the middle of the World Series and putting a renewed spotlight on domestic violence in baseball.Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow apologized for the team’s initial response Monday, which was to accuse a Sports Illustrated reporter of making up the story.“That original reaction by the Astros was wrong, and we own it as an organization,” Luhnow said during a news conference at Nationals Park, a day before Game 3.“There were many people involved in reviewing that and approving that. And I’m not going to get into the details of that. ... But regardless of who wrote it and who approved it, it was wrong. It was incorrect. It should never have been sent out. We’ve learned a lesson about it,” he said.Taubman had apologized Tuesday for using language that was “unprofessional and inappropriate” in the Astros clubhouse following Saturday night’s pennant-clinching victory over the New York Yankees.SI reported Taubman repeatedly yelled toward a group of female reporters about closer Roberto Osuna, who was suspended for 75 games last year for violating MLB’s domestic violence policy and then was traded from Toronto to the Astros.Taubman shouted “Thank God we got Osuna!” according to SI, which said he made similar remarks several times, punctuating them with a profanity.
