(KGTV) - A set of triplets took sibling rivalry to new heights in this year's spelling bee at O'Farrell Charter School.Seventh graders Miguel, Maya and Mia Brizuela finished 1st, 2nd and 4th in the school competition, respectively. Miguel advanced to the County-wide bee, held Thursday at Town and Country Hotel in Mission Valley."I'm very good at grammar, so it's really easy for me," says Miguel, when asked how he managed to win. But he also admits he got help from his sister, Maya."We were going back and forth, back and forth. And then, finally, Maya just decided to give up because she said that she didn't want to go to the county," he says.Maya confirmed the story that she let her brother win."Like, 1% of me wanted to win," she says. "But I have stage fright. I didn't want to go up there in the auditorium and spell words in front of a lot of people," she says.But it's Mia, who finished 4th at the school, who believes she's the best speller of the three."I felt like I needed to raise myself to their level of spelling," she says of her finish in the competition. "And I like to correct their grammar a lot."The three say they practice by holding mini-spelling bees at home, where their parents give them words to spell. They also study for 1-2 hours each night before bed.Now that Miguel had advanced to the County-wide competition, his sisters say they'll be there to cheer for him."He's my brother, I love him," says Maya. Federal authorities have taken a man into custody who claims to be the last person to see a missing Georgia woman, whose 2-year-old son was found wandering alone last month in a shirt and diaper at a South Florida parking lot.Federal authorities arrested Shanon Demar Ryan on two counts of lying to a federal officer, according to an online jail booking log for the Broward County Sheriff's Office.It was not immediately clear if the arrest had any connection to the disappearance of Leila Cavett, the 21-year-old mother whose child was found July 26 in Miramar. 570

(KGTV) - A series of unfortunate events may have led to an albino red-tailed boa constrictor named "Lemony Snicket" disappearing from a North County museum. Officials with the EcoVivarium children's museum in Escondido, California believe Lemony disappeared on April 29 during a tour of the museum's Arthropod Jungle. During the tour, staff took Lemony out of its cage to show guests, before returning it to its enclosure and locking the gate.Unfortunately, a security camera facing Lemony's enclosure was damaged that same day and did not capture what could have happened.Staff said they fear the snake may have been stolen. They said a man in his 20s left the tour group and never returned shortly before the snake disappeared."We are all heartbroken, and just want him safely returned, no questions asked," the museum said of Facebook. The snake was rescued four-and-a-half years ago in San Diego from an owner who had neglected it.Lemony is about 7-feet long, and yellow and orange, and has a scar on its face.Anyone with any information as to the snake's whereabouts is asked to call EcoVivarium at 760-975-9690.The situation is similar to another missing reptile case recently in North San Diego County."Bubbles" the monitor lizard slinked away from Mike's Pets in Spring Valley in March. Mike Estevez, of the store, said getting the word out was key in Bubbles' return."It really helped a lot," Estevez said. But as things start opening up, people want the service back. Brian Wiersma is a strategic initiatives and branch operations manager for Merry Maids.“A lot of our customers, they need our help cleaning their home and when you look at the CDC guidelines, the first step in maintaining a healthy home is to clean it before you disinfect it,” said Wiersma.He says, like everyone else, Merry Maids has had to adjust and adapt to every new recommendation from the CDC. No masks at first, and now masks all the time. There are new protocols for their team members and for their clients.“If you’re sick please, let us know even if it’s not COVID,” said Wiersma. “Let us know if you’re sick, so we can reschedule you just to be overly cautious.”They're asking employees to self-monitor, pay attention to everything they might feel, COVID-19 or not. They suggest clients either leave or remain in one part of the home. They bring their own equipment and clean the cleaning supplies when they're done.“As the team leaves the home, they take off the mask, they disinfect the kit before they put it in their vehicle to go to the next home, so they’re not taking contaminants into their vehicle and taking it to another customer,” said Wiersma.There are training videos, daily checklists, and they've even held meetings about how to take your gloves off.“It’s little things but in the same respect, it’s important things,” said Wiersma. “You take all these steps to be careful and precautious and at the very last step, if you don’t take your gloves off right you, might as well not have done the rest of them as far as keeping the team safe.”Angel Gatewood, 24, has been cleaning for Merry Maids for the past year. The hardest part for her, someone who loves customers and customer service, has been keeping her client relationships at a distance.“I still try to maintain that personal relationship with my customers which I think is important because I’m in their house every other week touching their things,” said Gatewood. “Your home is your personal bubble. When somebody enters it, you have to have that trust and I like to maintain that."She loves to connect with people and loves her detail-oriented job, but she has asthma and now has to be even more cautious than ever.“I personally take those extra steps,” she said. “I take my inhaler in every time. I wear two pairs of gloves. I also have eczema. It’s a double problem. I wear two pairs of gloves and the mask every time.”Wiersma says while COVID-19 has been challenging, it's about to get busier than ever as people realize health starts in the home."Merry Maids has been around for 40 years and Service Master for 90 years of cleaning and disinfecting, we'll stay who we are and that has helped us sustain through the crisis, but come out of it on a stronger footing." 3118

Everyone has a childhood memory of visiting Santa Claus and reading off their wishlist of toys they hope to find under the tree come Christmas morning.“There's nothing better than leaning down and getting that hug from the 5-year-old that comes running, so we’re gonna miss that,” Santa KJ Braithwaite said.Holiday cheer may look a little different this year. Santa’s helpers are going virtual in order to protect kids and Santa Claus. Due to COVID-19 and social distancing guidelines, home visits, hugs, and photos on Santa’s lap might be nonexistent.Santa KJ and his wife Carol Sherman already had COVID-19 once.“We caught it in July and got it together,” he explained. “It gives you a different perspective on what the year’s going to be like, and children need to be protected. We need to be protected.”Which begs the question: how will Santa spread holiday cheer from a distance? It will take a little more lights, camera, and action.That’s where Susen Mesco, founder of the Professional Santa Claus School, comes in. Along with a long list of helpers, over 100 of them, she’s been putting together a project to keep the holiday cheer alive this winter.“We’ve been filming and working on it since mid-April,” Mesco said. “We’ve put a lot into this.”Mesco has been training Santa Claus and his team since the 1980s. She was recently inducted into the International Santa Claus Hall of Fame. But this was something new.“We’ve really poured our hearts into this, and we’re so proud of what we’ve come up with,” she said.Mesco isn’t letting the Grinch steal Christmas this year, so they're working around the clock to build a website filled with hours of videos and family fun.“Learning and singing and sharing and doing crafts and making cookies and learning hot cocoa recipes and seeing Santa's fire engine,” Mesco said. The list goes on. “The trend in the industry has gone to the virtual side," she said.But the cost of Christmas cheer wasn’t free for Mesco.“We realized it was going to be enormously expensive to put together something of the magnitude of what we wanted to give the children, a four-layered program,” she said. “So, I did mortgage my house, and I do believe in the people I'm working with, and I really believe in this product.” A product filled with Santa’s stories, singalongs, activities, and virtual live visits.“My day usually begins around 6 a.m. and ends around 4 a.m. We are doing editing and polishing and the final touches,” she said. It's all set to launch at the beginning of November.“Santa is safe and he's been in quarantine at the North Pole, so the children can be absolutely sure that on Christmas Eve if they are in bed sleeping, that Santa will come to their house,” Mesco said. 2729
