MOYOCK, N.C. – Three-year-old Vernon Smith is passionate about fire trucks and got a major surprise from dozens of first responders this weekend. Crawford Township Volunteer Fire Department in North Carolina hosted a drive-by parade for the little boy who is about to have his third open heart surgery.Vernon’s dad, Blake Smith, wanted to put a smile on his son’s face, so he asked if the local fire truck could drive by. Word got around about Vernon’s story, and dozens of firefighters, police and others wanted to be part of the surprise.Other surrounding departments learned about the event and joined in: Moyock Volunteer Fire Department, the Lower Currituck Volunteer Fire Department, the South Camden Volunteer Fire Department, Currituck County Fire-EMS, the Currituck County Sheriff’s Department, the Camden County Sheriff’s Department, Pasquotank EMS, Lantz’s Towing, and North Carolina State Highway Patrol.One of the assistant chiefs for the Crawford Township Volunteer Fire Department, Keith Storf, said the support they got from the neighboring departments was just phenomenal.Vernon’s mom, Brittany Blackwelder, said when she was 21 weeks pregnant, they learned that Vernon had a heart defect called hypoplastic left heart syndrome. It is a rare disease that causes the left side of his heart to not work properly, which causes the right side to work double-time.Blackwelder said this will be his third reconstructive surgery, and said hopefully it will stabilize him. She said he can never play competitive sports and gets tired easily, but she said otherwise he should be able to live a normal life.Storf said the little boy has gone through more than most adults. He said they were delighted to see him jumping up and down in the driveway during the surprise visit from the firefighters and first responders.“They gave him so many gifts and presents, and it was all about him and he was in heaven and excited,” said Blackwelder.“That was the best feeling in the world - to see his face,” said Blake Smith. “He was stoked.”This story originally reported by Margaret Kavanagh on wtkr.com. 2111

(KGTV) -- Thursday afternoon, police chased a suspect through San Diego County they say stole a vehicle from National City. During the pursuit, police used spikes, which shredded tires on the truck. After the truck came to a stop in Encanto, police could be seen shooting pepper balls into the truck. The suspect emerged from the vehicle a few moments later when a police K9 could be seen attacking the suspect before he was placed in handcuffs and taken into custody. Police say a Pit Bull was found in the back seat of the truck. At this time, authorities say it's unclear whether the dog belongs to the suspect or the person the truck was stolen from. 10News was live throughout the chase. MONTPELIER, Vt. -- Near a community garden, Natasha Duarte is in her element: compost.“I see organics as a resource more than a waste. There's a lot of nutrients in it, there's a lot of value in it,” said Duarte, who is with the Composting Association of Vermont.Now, in Vermont, it’s now part of a universal recycling law, which passed in 2012 and has been brought online in phases. As a last step, it addresses what to do with food waste.“July 1, Vermont took the step of banning disposal of food scraps from the trash,” said Josh Kelly with the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation.That means everyone in the state -- from businesses to residents – must now keep their food waste out of the garbage.Across the country, about 40% of all the food Americans buy ends up in the trash. That food waste costs the average family of four about ,500 a year. It also takes up valuable space in landfills. Vermont now becomes the first state in the country where a food waste law applies to everyone.“We have a lot of different options for residents and businesses to manage their food waste,” Kelly said. “We have composting facilities across the state. We have a growing number of food scrap haulers and we have drop off locations for folks around the state.”One of those drop-off locations is at Green Mountain Compost.“We've actually been composting food waste for almost three decades,” said Dan Goossen of Chittenden Solid Waste District.The large-scale facility accepts residents dropping off their food scraps, as well as food waste from larger venues, like university cafeterias or apartment complexes.All those food scraps come together with yard waste and produce a finished product for use in gardening.“With a little bit of biology and a little bit of time and oxygen, it turns into a really amazing black compost finished product,” Goossen said.Natasha Duarte said that completes what’s known as “The Food Circle” and also allows people to see how much food they waste.“Just seeing the volume of it separated out from the rest of their trash or recycling, raises that awareness,” she said.It is an awareness that what used to be trash can eventually yield a community garden of treasures. 2216

MORENO VALLEY, Calif. (AP) — A 13-year-old boy seriously injured in an attack involving two other students at a Southern California middle school is "clinically dead" after life-saving treatments failed, authorities said Wednesday.The family of the teen identified only as "Diego" plans to donate his organs, according to a Riverside County Sheriff's Department press release.The student was assaulted Sept. 16 at Landmark Middle School in the city of Moreno Valley, the department said.Two other juveniles who are also students at the school could face prosecution in the assault. Both were booked into juvenile hall last week. Officials have not said if the charges against the two have been increased because of the boy's death.No further information will immediately be released due to the ages of all involved, the department said.The Moreno Valley Unified School District said it will provide counselors at Landmark.A remembrance ceremony will be held at the school Thursday evening."This is a life-changing tragedy for everyone involved, including the staff and students at Landmark Middle School," Mayor Yxstian Gutierrez said in a statement.Moreno Valley is a city of about 194,000 people 60 miles (97 kilometers) east of Los Angeles. 1251

More than 100 students knelt on the benches of Notre Dame Stadium while "The Star-Spangled Banner" played during the school's football game against Florida State University on Saturday.Taking a knee to protest racial injustices began in 2016 when then-San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick knelt during the national anthem before a preseason NFL game.Kaepernick's actions were based mostly on political issues, but the students wanted to put a spin on the protest and make it a religious matter as well."We wanted to frame this movement around Notre Dame's religion, which is Catholic. Some made it a moment of silence, and others prayed," said Katie Hieatt, one of five protest organizers.Durrell Jackson, another of the organizers, began protesting earlier in the college football season with a couple of friends. That's when Shawn Wu stepped in and decided this needed to be a bigger movement.With the help of three other students, they organized the November 10 protest that led 80 of their junior classmates and about 30 students in the senior class to kneel."For me personally, this is both a political and religious issue," Jackson said. "Police brutality and racial [and] social injustice against brothers and sisters is not the Christian thing to do."The students brought back some of the school's history as they knelt in solidarity.They linked arms in prayer like the Rev. Theodore Hesburgh, who served as the school's president until 1987, and the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. did in 1964 at a civil rights rally in Chicago, as they sang "We Shall Overcome."Like Hesburgh and King, the students hope to bring people together to respect one another even if they have different beliefs."Rather than being dismissed as 'just a liberal act,' many might reconsider how this movement of justice and reconciliation aligns deeply with shared values (among many) of faith, Notre Dame tradition, and Fr. "One of the things we want to stress the most with this movement is that this is not a protest against the military or the flag, this is about how we treat each other as human beings.
