Congressional leaders will hold their weekly press conferences on Thursday, their first since it was formally projected that Democrats would hold on to control of the chamber for another two years.Democratic leadership in Congress slammed President Donald Trump's refusal to concede the election to President-elect Joe Biden in a press conference on Capitol Hill Thursday. In comments to reporters, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi highlighted that Trump's election fight comes as the U.S. is facing an unprecedented surge in the COVID-19 pandemic.Watch Rep. Kevin McCarthy's press conference in the video below."The President and the Republicans in Congress have ignored by delay, distortion, denial. Deaths have been caused. And what are they doing now? Continuing to ignore in spite of these numbers of (COVID-19 cases)," she said.Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer claimed Republicans were "poisoning the well" by supporting Trump's challenge to the election on unproven claims of widespread voter fraud.Despite nearly all media outlets calling the 2020 election for President-elect Joe Biden, President Donald Trump has said he plans to challenge the results of the election on unsubstantiated claims of fraud. Despite the President's claim, no state has yet reported widespread issues in ballot tallying that would indicate the results of the election are in doubt. While House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy mostly avoided addressing Trump's specific claims of voter fraud, he said he supports the administration's right to legally challenge the results. He added that all Americans regardless of whom they support should welcome the Trump campaign's challenges, claiming it made the process more transparent and restored faith in the electoral system.McCarthy did not directly respond when asked if he believed Trump's lawsuits would alter the outcome of the election. On Wednesday, The Associated Press formally projected that Democrats had picked up the required 220 seats in order to retain control of the House of Representatives through 2022.Pelosi's comments come as Politico reports that she and other current House leaders are on track to continue serving in their roles when the next Congress is sworn in next year.Pelosi, who is in her second stint as House Speaker (she also served in the same role from 2007 to 2011) has faced criticism from progressive members of the party who claim her moderate politics caused the Democrats to lose seats in the 2020 election.Watch Pelosi's press conference in the video below. 2535

CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) — You may not find a cowardly lion, brainless scarecrow, or heartless Tin Man on Coronado, but the city's connection to one of history's most famed stories runs deep."Wizard of Oz" author L. Frank Baum has several connections to the scenic beach city. Between 1904 to 1910, Baum and his family vacationed in the city often, according to San Diego's tourism website.Baum was reportedly such a fan of Coronado's beauty, he wrote a portion of the "Oz" series there. SD FAIR 2019: What to know | Admission discounts | Parking and transportation | Rides and games | Concert headlinersAnd his links can still be found around town:Baum's Coronado homeThe Coronado home L. Frank Baum rented on Star Park Circle still stands today. While it's not open to the public (it's a private residence, so view from the sidewalk), the property is the sight where Baum wrote "Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz," "The Emerald City of Oz," "The Road to Oz," and portions of "The Marvelous Land of Oz."The home's owners haven't shied away from the notoriety either. A small "wicked witch" can be seen from the side of the house and a "ding dong" witch doormat. The Hotel Del CoronadoBaum and his family were known to visit the Hotel Del often in the early 1900s. Hotel officials say the author would reside at the Del for months at a time. The Crown RoomThe hotel's links run even deeper with Baum. The regal chandeliers in the hotel's "Crown Room" were designed by Baum.Rare "Wizard of Oz" first editionsCoronado's Museum of History and Art have three rare first editions of Baum's "Oz" series on display. Admission to the museum is free, making it even easier to take in literary history."Oz" art exhibitInside the Coronado Public Library, an elaborate work of "Wizard of Oz" characters and scenes on nine glass panels are on display. The artwork shows Dorothy, the cowardly lion, scarecrow, and Tin Man as an ode to Baum's stories.Baum-inspired "Author's Study"Another nod to Baum can be found at the 1906 Lodge at Coronado Beach. The bed and breakfast's "Author's Study" is decorated with art prints of the "ruby slippers," characters from the "Oz" series, a writing desk, and autobiaography on Baum. "The Queen of Fairyland"A poem by Baum submitted to the San Diego Union in 1905 speaks of the author's love and inspiration for Coronado. The poem, titled "Coronado: The Queen of Fairyland," speaks of "enjoyment stranger and grand" and "dreams are sweet and moments fleet."This year, the San Diego County Fair celebrates Baum and his stories under the exciting theme of "Oz-some," putting foods, exhibits, and experiences themed after the author's works on full display. 2678

CITRUS COUNTY, Florida — A woman was attacked by an alligator on Wednesday while she was swimming in a lake in Citrus County, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission. The FWC says 24-year-old Felicitie Marie Gillette was swimming in Lake Hernando around 1 a.m. when an alligator grabbed her by the left arm and began to drag her underwater. "You could tell by the aggressive movements by the alligator."Dennis Weis shared cell phone video with ABC Action News showing an alligator roaming in the water near the beach, just a few days before the attack. Weis believes that people were feeding the alligator."When the kids jumped into the water over there, he would go up over there, go under," said Weis.FWC says the victim is currently homeless.FWC wants to remind the public that if anyone believes a specific alligator poses a threat to people, pets or property, they should immediately call the toll-free Nuisance Alligator Hotline at 866-FWC-GATOR or 866-392-4286. 1667

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - It's art with a message, and the purposeful signs can be found throughout Middle Tennessee. The word "vote" is written on each of Paul Collins' artistic animal signs. The art pieces range in shapes sizes and species. Some are even hidden from plain sight while others can't be missed. It's become quite the scavenger hunt for some on the lookout for these signs."I look around and place them by bus stops," Collins said. "I look for the corners that have 'vote for me' signs because that’s fair game."Collins, an Austin Peay State University art professor, started the project 100 days before election day. Although he only planned to create one a day counting down until November 3, more and more people started requesting the signs and now he's made over 200. The signs can be spotted from Springfield to Nashville to Brentwood and Clarksville.Collins is a New Yorker who moved to Tennessee a decade ago and has used this project to see his new home state."A lot of this is getting to know your city," said Collins. "it’s been great to my family part of this was just a love letter to the city and go to places I haven’t been."Collins is doing all of this out of his own pocket and gives away the signs for free. He says as long as it inspires residents to register and vote, it's a job well done."Vote that's it, it's really simple," Collins said, "Exercise the joy and responsibility of being American and vote."The voter registration deadline is October 5. A map of where his artwork is located can be found here. The Clarksville area has an installation of 31 pieces on the Austin Peay State University campus. This story was first reported by Seena Sleem at WTVF in Nashville, Tennessee. 1719
