Danish inventor Peter Madsen has been found guilty of the mutilation and murder of Swedish journalist Kim Wall, and sentenced to life in prison.He was also found guilty of the indecent handling of a corpse and "sexual relations other than intercourse of a particularly dangerous nature," evidenced by stab wounds inside and outside Wall's genital area.Wall, a promising 30-year-old journalist, was last seen boarding Madsen's submarine in Copenhagen on August 10 last year when she had planned to interview him for an upcoming article.Instead she disappeared, her torso washed up on August 21 on an island near Copenhagen. Her head and legs were found weeks later.Madsen consistently denied charges of murder and sexual assault, claiming Wall died by accident from carbon dioxide poisoning, although he admitted to dismembering her body and tossing it into the sea in a state of panic.Asked on Monday if he wanted to make a last statement before the jury went into deliberation, he said, "If anything, I am sorry about what happened."  1048

DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) — While a hotly-debated gun show is returning to the Del Mar Fairground, its future remains clouded after a recently signed law. The Crossroads of the West gun show returned to the fairgrounds Saturday, two months after Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill banning the sale of guns and ammo at the venue. That law doesn't take effect until 2021, allowing the gun show to continue until then."It's been a mainstay for 30 years in San Diego and a small group of extremists tried to get it canceled and were successful for just a few months last year, but fortunately the courts stepped in and said, 'no you can't discriminate against a group based on what they described as their culture," Michael Schwartz, executive director of San Diego County Gun Owners, told reporters Saturday. Assembly Bill 893, introduced in February by State Assemblymember Todd Gloria (D-78), argues California shouldn't have a role in facilitating gun sales. Gov. "The state just shouldn't have a role in facilitating the flow of guns into neighborhoods where children are killed." "It gives a perverse new meaning to 'women and children first.' Crossroads appealed the suspension and was granted the right to return in June 2019.The show's contract runs through 2020.Schwartz admits they don't know what will happen to the show after the next year, but they're hopeful the court system will rule in their favor once again."We believe there is going to be some kind of court decision and there is the possibility that it will be delayed and have to move its way up through the court system," Schwartz said. "But we're very confident that the court's going to see that this type of discrimination against this group of people — that they simply consider undesirable — is not right. "The fairgrounds is a state-owned, regional asset and just because one city decides they don't like a culture, that doesn't mean that they can kick them out of town ... Del Mar doesn't get to dictate who they like and who they dislike." 3252

DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) - On the 80th Anniversary of Del Mar horse racing the industry is facing extra scrutiny over protecting the animals. This comes after 30 horses died at the Santa Anita Racetrack this past year.One of the newest safety protocols is bringing on two monitoring veterinarians who are stationed at elevated observation points to oversee morning workouts. If the veterinarian is concerned about a horse, they can radio outriders policing the track to remove horses and have them undergo a follow-up examination for soundness. "There's been a lot of concern over racehorse welfare and safety the past few months, it's something that Del Mar Thoroughbred Club has always been concerned about," said Dr. Alina Vale, one of the monitoring veterinarians.But Vale says they're now even more cautious and vigilant, working to rebuild the California racehorse community."The more subtle signs that I'm looking for are horses that might have mild injuries that haven't been detected before, so we're trying to catch those mild injuries before they become major injuries," said Dr. Vale. The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club also adopted new medication standards and can randomly select any horse for drug testing at any time. Workout activity will also be monitored closely. The number of horse deaths has dropped in recent years at Del Mar, with four in all of 2018.Dr. Vale encourages people to come to the track during morning training to see the care that goes into horses outside of racing. 1507

Democrat Cal Cunningham formally conceded on Tuesday to Republican incumbent Thom Tillis in the US Senate race in North Carolina that could help pave the way toward Republicans retaining Senate.The race in North Carolina has not been formally called by the Associated Press as there are an unknown number of provisional and uncured ballots that are left to be counted in North Carolina.Cunningham once held a significant lead in polling, but the last few polls that were released before the election were within the margin of error. Another race Republicans are likely to win is in Alaska, where Sen. Dan Sullivan is expected to maintain his seat.Assuming Tillis and Sullivan win re-election, Republicans will control at least 50 seats in the new US Senate come January. Two remaining seats will be decided in a runoff in Georgia. Democrat Jon Ossoff just barely forced a runoff against Republican David Perdue last week. In a special election, Democrat Raphael Warnock and Republican Kelly Loeffler will meet after Loeffler held off a Republican challenger to finish in the top 2 of last week's general election.Democrats would need both seats in Georgia to force a 50-50 tie in the US Senate, with Vice President-elect Kamala Harris acting as a tie breaker on the Democrats’ behalf.The two Georgia races will likely draw a lot of attention as Democrats will be hopeful to gain the two seats in order to have an easier path to get judicial and administration nominees approved by the Senate.Regardless, Democrats will gain some ground following the 2020 election, netting an additional seat after flipping seats in Colorado and Arizona. DEL MAR (KGTV) - One person died after being struck by an Amtrak train Sunday morning, according to the San Diego Sheriff's Department.Deputies said that a woman walked through the signal guards at 15th Street and Coast Boulevard in Del Mar around 10 a.m. She was struck by the train, which was traveling at 48 miles per hour, and she was pronounced dead at the scene, deputies said. The woman has not been identified. The Sheriff's Department is asking anyone with information about this to call 858-565-5200. 538
