SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities Wednesday publicly identified a 27-year-old man who was fatally shot last weekend in an apparently unprovoked attack near the handball courts at the Linda Vista Recreation Center.Officers responding to reports of shots fire around 11 a.m. Sunday at the recreation center, 7064 Levant St., found San Diego-resident Israel Castro suffering from at least one gunshot to his upper body, San Diego police Lt. Andra Brown said.Paramedics took Castro to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Brown said.While officers were at the hospital, a 30-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound was brought in by a private vehicle, the lieutenant said. The man told officers he was also at the Linda Vista Recreation Center when he was shot.Witnesses told police that a man wearing a mask and shorts was seen running from the scene and getting into a white four-door vehicle that sped off southbound on Linda Vista Road, Brown said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - County supervisors Wednesday unanimously approved the .1 million purchase of a nearly seven-acre parcel for a park in the community of Fallbrook.The 6.8-acre property, owned by Barr Ranch LLC, is located south of Fallbrook Road between Morro and Golden roads.Supervisor Jim Desmond, whose district includes Fallbrook, said the town doesn't have enough parks. He added the county will hold meetings with residents to see what kind of amenities residents would like included. He said some early requests include playgrounds and a skate park.Fallbrook currently has three local parks, providing 1 acre per 1,000 residents. That number doesn't meet the General Plan goal of 10 acres of local parkland for that same number of people.Money for the park purchase will come from a community development block grant, according to county documents. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - County supervisors Wednesday approved a master plan update for the McClellan-Palomar Airport in Carlsbad, which includes extending the runway 800 feet.The 4-0 vote also approved environmental reports associated with the upgrade.Board Chairwoman Kristin Gaspar abstained, saying her family's company owns property near the airport.According to a county presentation, the Carlsbad-based airport accommodates commercial, corporate and private flights.However, the airport is not able to accommodate Boeing 737 planes. The runway extension ranges between 370 and 800 feet.By 2030, it will support 4,600 jobs and generate over 0 million in business-related revenue, million in taxes, the report said.The total upgrade would cost 2 million, with the county paying million; while the federal government would take care of the rest, according to the county. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man held up a gas station in Mountain View and escaped on foot early today, police said.It happened just before 4 a.m. at a Chevron gas station on National Avenue near 35th Street, according to Officer Sarah Foster of the San Diego Police Department.A man walked into the gas station and pointed a gun at an employee, demanding money, Foster said.The employee complied and opened the cash register. The suspect took money from the register, grabbed two packs of cigarettes and took off on foot, Foster said. Police were unable to find him.Robbery detectives were investigating the incident. 618

SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- Hundreds of thousands of San Diegans are expected to cast their ballots in person today, Election Day, with over 1 million ballots already received.The San Diego County Registrar of Voters said more than 1.1 million ballots have been received and nearly 60,000 residents have voted early in-person as of Monday, well more than double when compared to this point in the 2016 presidential election.Of the 1.95 million registered voters in the county, 1,114,627 had already turned in their ballots as of election eve.
