SHANGHAI, April 30 (Xinhua) -- China tried to hold a low-carbon opening ceremony for the Shanghai World Expo Friday evening, a fair featuring ideas for sustainable urban life.From energy-efficient stereo system and LED screens to clean and smoke-free fireworks, green ideas were in full swing at the ceremony.Program menus, brochures, gift handbags and props for the ceremony were made of recyclable paper, and used milk boxes had been turned into 2,000 VIP seats.The Expo site boasts a 4.7-megawatt solar power system, China's largest, with solar panels installed on Expo buildings, according to Expo organizers.Most of the materials used to make the pavilions will be recycled, and zero-emission vehicles are used for transport within the Expo grounds, said the organizers.In addition, a wide range of "urban best practices" will be on show in many local and corporate pavilions, showing sustainable urban technologies.

BEIJING, May 27 (Xinhua) -- Two spokespersons have been named for China's Information Office of the State Council, or Cabinet, and the International Communication Office of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee.The two spokespersons are Guo Weimin, director of the press bureau under the two offices, and Li Wufeng, director of the offices' Internet affairs bureau, according to a press release on the office's official website.In December last year, Wang Chen, director of the State Council Information Office, said the establishment of a spokesperson system for the CPC committees would be a major task for 2010.The system would be promoted in departments of the CPC Central Committee and provincial-level committees to enable them to release information on Party-related affairs by holding press conferences and providing interview opportunities, he said.

Uzbekistan wishes to further deepen its mutuallu beneficial cooperation with China on politics, economy, trade and security, which will benefit the two countries and the two peoples, Karimov said Friday during a meeting with Meng.China-Uzbekistan relations developed smoothly in 2009, said Meng, who also attended the fifth session of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Security Council Secretaries in Tashkent.Leaders of the two countries have kept close contacts, which is a strong driving force for the development of bilateral ties, Meng said.The two countries have expanded their pragmatic cooperation in various fields and conducted effective cooperation on international and regional issues, he said.China values its traditional friendship with Uzbekistan and wishes to promote the friendly and cooperative partnership between the two countries. The partnership complies with the fundamental interests of the two countries and it is conducive to maintaining regional peace and stability, Meng said.During his visit, Meng also held talks with Uzbek Interior Minister Bahodir Matlubov and Chief of Security Rustam Inayatov.The two sides held an extensive and in-depth exchange of views on exchanges of law enforcement agencies and the promotion of law enforcement cooperation between the two countries.

  

BEIJING, April 16 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislature will convene its bimonthly session from April 26-29 and review draft amendments to the State Secrets Law and the State Compensation Law.The decision was made Friday at a meeting of the Council of Chairmen of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, presided over by top legislator Wu Bangguo.The draft amendment to the State Secrets Law, which will undergo its third reading during the upcoming legislative meeting, aims to boost citizens' awareness of the importance of safeguarding state secrets.The draft amendment to the State Compensation Law, which will be submitted for its fourth reading, aims to better defend people's rights from being violated by the state. It is also hoped to cover the protection of detainees' rights following a series of deaths in the country's detention houses.The session will also deliberate, for the second time, on a draft law on protection of oil and natural gas pipelines, according to a statement issued by the council.The statement said a treaty on explosives left over from war and a Sino-Indonesian extradition treaty, both submitted by the State Council, or Cabinet, are expected to be ratified at the session.Lawmakers will also discuss Cabinet reports on protection of migrant workers' rights, the development of the cultural industry, strengthening road safety management, the implementation of a law protecting Taiwan compatriots' investment, as well as a motion regarding appointments and dismissals.At Friday's meeting, members of the Council of Chairmen expressed their condolences to victims of a deadly earthquake that hit Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in northwest China's Qinghai Province early Wednesday.They also paid tribute to rescuers from the People's Liberation Army, armed police, among others at the forefront of quake relief.

  

ISLAMABAD, March 30 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese embassy official Tuesday called on an official of the Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS) to donate 30,000 U.S. dollars on behalf of the China Red Cross Society (CRCS) to assist the residents affected by the landslide in northern Pakistan early this year.Muhammad Ilyas Khan, PRCS secretary general, asked Yao Jing, counselor of the Chinese embassy to Pakistan, to convey his appreciation to the CRCS for its generous donation to Hunza, Gilgit-Baltistan due to the landslide in January, 2010.He said that Chinese friends always extend assistance to Pakistan in difficult times and Pakistan is proud of its friendship with China.At present, the local government and PRCS are working hard to provide relief to the villages. The government is also trying to control the damage and tackle with the challenge caused by the lake in the area.On January 4, a serious landslide occurred in Gilgit-Baltistan and formed a huge barrier lake. The slide blocked over 20,000 local residents in Upper Hunza from outside. The Pakistani government is conducting the rescue and relief work . On January 19, at the request of the Pakistani government, the Chinese side made special arrangements to open the Kunjirap border and facilitate the purchase of relief goods from China and its clearance.The China Road and Bridge Corporation, which is conducting the project of upgradation of the Karakoram Highway, has also provided engineering consultations and equipment to help the Pakistani side to deal with the problem.
