SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A 58-year-old man severely injured after an assault at a home in Clairemont in early April died Monday. According to police, 58-year-old Randy Taing died of his injuries in the evening of April 8. San Diego Police said the incident occurred in the 4100 block of Ashford St. before 12 p.m. The man reportedly called his wife sometime around 11:45 a.m., though his wife said the phone was silent.She asked her son to call, who got through to his dad. That's when the man told his son something along the lines of a possible break-in, police say.The man's son called 9-1-1 and rushed home to find his father with upper body injuries. The man was taken to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said. Police said there were no signs of forced entry, but a safe had been taken. Neighbors of the family-owned business a mile away from their home, Rose Donuts, said the safe probably contained cash from the business. A family friend said the father, who he called Randy, was asleep at home during the robbery because he was filling in for his nephew at work. He said he was baking donuts at 2 a.m. while his nephew was on vacation.Customers who work in the area say the family is beloved. "They have two boys and sometimes they even babysit the grand kids while they’re working... SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A group of Black student leaders from Poway Unified School District schools met last week with administrators, principals and counselors to discuss ways to address issues of racism and inequality in the district.The students are the presidents of the Black Student Unions at each of PUSD's five high schools.It was the first meeting since the student leaders sent an email asking to see changes in the district to improve the lives of students of color."Making PUSD not just not racist but transparently anti-racist," said Jade Thompson, president of the BSU at Rancho Bernardo High School.Thompason helped write the email, which also talked about the recently created Instagram account "Black in PUSD,” which anonymously details students' experiences with racism."We just think it was a great way to open up people's eyes cause people like to say not in this community," said Thompson.Superintendent Dr. Kim Phelps agrees, saying, "To hold people accountable, including the district and our teachers and everybody ... I'm proud of our students for doing that.”Phelps and Thompson both described the meeting as productive and positive.Among the issues discussed were student education and assemblies addressing racism. The district is also committing to more diverse hiring and curriculum."It's upon us to try to do better; we have a lot of work to do and we want to do better so it’s a growing and learning opportunity for all of us," said Phelps.The students and administrators also talked about the consequences for racism-related incidents.Students said they'd like to see a form of restorative justice instead of just punishment.Although both students and staff agree there's a lot more to be done, they also say the first step is recognizing the problem and starting the conversation."I have a lot of hope for the future of this year and the years to come," said Thompson. 1906

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A former longtime San Diego Zoo biologist has pleaded guilty to stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from the iconic zoo.Matthew John Anderson, 49, of Ramona, Calif., admitted to stealing more than 6,000 through bogus vendor invoices between December 2008 and October 2016, according to the Office of the U.S. Attorney Southern District of California.Investigators say Anderson created 35 fake invoices billing the San Diego Zoo for various payments from purported vendors. The zoo paid the invoices to third parties that then gave the bulk of the payment to Anderson. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - With regional intensive-care unit capacity still officially considered to be zero, Gov. Gavin Newsom said Monday the regional stay-at-home order imposed by the state for the entirety of Southern California will almost assuredly be extended beyond next week's expiration date."We are likely, I think it's pretty self-evident, going to need to extend those regional dates," Newsom said. "... Based upon all the data and based upon all these trend lines, it is very likely based on those current trends that we'll need to extend that stay at home order, (which) you recall was a three-week order when we announced it."The regional stay-at-home order for the 11-county Southern California region took effect at 11:59 p.m. Dec. 6, and was originally set to end on Dec. 28. Newsom did not give an indication of exactly when a decision on extending the order will be made, or much long the order will remain in place.The Southern California region covers Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Diego, Imperial, Inyo, Mono, San Bernardino, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura counties. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A driver lost control of their vehicle Tuesday night, crashing into a power pole while trying to avoid other cars Tuesday night.The crash, which happened around 8 p.m., caused an explosion and sent power lines arching. Several nearby bushes caught fire because of the explosion but firefighters were able to put them out quickly.The incident happened near South 43rd and Division Streets.   428
