KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A Kansas City, Missouri Police officer shot a pit bull Friday afternoon after the dog bit a USPS mail carrier.Officers and Animal Control responded around 4:30 p.m. local timeFriday to the 1500 block of NE 79th Street on the call.According to police notes, they located two “large, aggressive pit bull dogs” on the scene.While the animal control officer attempted to capture the dogs, one of them charged toward the officer, prompting the officer to open fire on the dog, striking it in the shoulder.The second dog ran away back to the residence it had escaped from where it was eventually captured.A few minutes after being shot, the dog jumped up and ran around a house where animal control captured it.During the course of the investigation, officers spoke with the owner of the two dogs.The owner was “belligerent” and did not want to accept responsibility for the dogs running loose in the neighborhood, according to police.  977

Jake, a coonhound, wandered a long way from his Arizona home -- more than 2,000 miles to be exact."We are just really baffled by it," said Renae Metz with A Darrah Bull Bully Rescue in Pennsylvania.A good Samaritan found the 7-year-old dog near a YMCA in Roaring Spring, Pennsylvania about 100 miles east of Pittsburgh. When they scanned him for a microchip, they found one, and it came back registered to Phoenix."We thought maybe a truck driver possibly found Jake in the middle of the night and didn't know what to do with him and brought him home, but we don't know that that's a fact," Metz said.After finding the microchip, they made the phone call to Jake's owners."We have a 7-year-old coonhound here who is registered to you, are you missing your dog?" Metz asked the owners.It turns out they were, for the past year. Jake disappeared from their north Peoria home. Getting Jake back wouldn't be easy with a brand new baby, but Metz wasn't about to give up on getting the dog home."We have 20 different drivers, three overnights and a lot of stops for Jake," Metz laughed.Metz's sister is a transport coordinator for rescued animals. She used the power of Facebook to put out the call for help and arranged for his return.From Tennessee to Arkansas to Oklahoma to Texas and New Mexico, over the past three days, the volunteers took photos along the way. Many businesses have gone cash-free, asking customers to pay with cards instead.It's one of the changes Crow's Coffee implemented as a result of the pandemic."Even pre-COVID, cash was already a dirty thing," Zach Moore, the owner, said.By accepting online orders and cards only, Moore hoped to limit contact between customers and staff.Most, but not all, customers had no problem with the decision."There have been a few people that want to use cash and can't, and they tell us it's illegal for us to not take cash," Moore said.However, according to the Federal Reserve, it is in fact legal."Private businesses are free to develop their own policies on whether to accept cash unless there is a state law that says otherwise," says the agency's website.Some states and cities, including New Jersey, Philadelphia, and San Francisco, have instituted bans on cashless businesses.
