SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two San Diego police officers responding to a call for a shoplifter in Ocean Beach ended up buying the suspect clothes and shoes instead of arresting him.It happened on Jan. 6 around 5 a.m. at the location on Sunset Cliffs Blvd. SDPD officers Christian Nimmons and Dominic Collins said employees at the drugstore reported that a homeless man had come in, stolen a sweatshirt and refused to leave. The store declined to press charges but wanted the man out of the store. But knowing it was very cold outside, and seeing the man also didn't have a shirt or socks and shoes, the officers decided to buy them for him."We looked at each other, asked how much the sweatshirt was going to cost, and had the same mutual decision of giving him the sweatshirt," said Collins. Both men told 10News it was simply the right thing to do and part of their job as officers to show compassion for those they come in contact with."I think he was more shocked that cops were doing something for him," Nimmons said. "We couldn't leave him like that. That was really it. It's what we joined to do. To help people."The man, only known to the officers as Daniel, reportedly put on the items and left. 1201

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - With so many families feeling the financial impact of COVID-19 this year, a Linda Vista family is hoping to quietly bring some holiday cheer to neighbors by taking on the role of Secret Santa.Jaelyn,13, Jayda, 11, and Jessica, 4, will be doing plenty of wrapping this holiday season. Their mom Rhian and her partner, Jeff Leardini, are determined to deliver some holiday cheer."There are so many families that are worried about how they're going to make it to tomorrow. Christmas is the last thing on their mind. We want to take that worry away," said Leardini.Leardini posted on the Nextdoor app an offer to buy and wrap a Christmas toy for any neighbors in need, no strings attached. Leardini, a sales manager for a pet supply company, and his girlfriend, a nurse, kept their jobs during the pandemic."We feel very fortunate and want to help people," said Leardini.During this holiday season, his family are now playing the part of Secret Santa."We just thought there are people that might be embarrassed to go to organizations, so we thought can we help them without them having to go through a lot of red tape," said Leardini. So far, a handful of neighbors have responded to his offer"It's been really emotional reading the messages," said Leardini. Some are dealing with lost jobs, others with COVID-related health issues. Those families will soon receive something extra under the tree."Want to deliver smiles to them, even if it's just for one day. Their children will be happy, and that in turn will deliver joy to their family. That's our hope," said Leardini. It's a big hope, but not the only one."My hope is that people will see my post and be inspired to help others within their own community," said Leardini.Leardini hopes to buy and wrap several dozen gifts. If you know of a family that could use Leardini's help, email us at Tips@10news.com 1882

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two fires sparked Saturday afternoon in East County, in addition to a thunderstorm in Pine Valley, created dicey conditions for firefighters.Cal Fire Captain Thomas Shoots said the humidity made a huge difference, "the monsoonal moisture the stickiness has been good because it's helped keep our fires small," slowing the spread of flames. The Bratton Fire sparked in Lawson Valley around 1:30 p.m. and scorched 4 acres. Then around 2:10 p.m., the Sloane Fire started burning in Dehesa, blackening 18 acres. Both were knocked down quickly."We hope that people don't get complacent that we've hit these fires very aggressively and it's worked out," Shoots said.He said if we didn't have the humidity we would be in trouble, "there's a lot of fuel that comes with a good winter so that grass crop is all cured out and ready to burn."Shoots said they were keeping their eye on the thunderstorm in Pine Valley. The National Weather Service reported a severe thunderstorm warning with quarter-sized hail and gusts up to 60 miles per hour."We knew it wasn't going to be to the extent that the north saw when the storms rolled through but it was still definitely a potential concern," Shoots said.Looking forward, Shoots says we need to be very careful, "San Diego and a good chunk of California is sitting at a higher potential for wildfire activity in October-November."He advises creating defensible space around your home not only to protect your home but protect your family if you can't escape in time.Shoots said he hopes firefighters are able to get a handle on the fires in Northern California and stay safe.He said 96% of all Cal Fire engines are working, which shows how extreme this fire season is.More than half of Cal Fire San Diego's resources have been sent up north to help, including 32 engines. Shoots says local fire departments are stepping up to help in their absence. 1907

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — With bars that don’t serve food shut down as of Wednesday, some employees may be finding themselves in need of unemployment benefits just days after they stopped collecting them. Some San Diego County bars got just 19 days to operate before they were shuttered again, but that’s plenty of time for employees to have their unemployment benefits lapse. The good news is that individuals don’t have to start entirely from square one.REBOUND: Search for job openings in San Diego County “It should be less time-consuming this go around,” said Andrew Picard with the San Diego Workforce Partnership, a local non-profit agency that supports job-seekers with training, but is not in charge of processing unemployment benefits. It turns out, if you stop certifying for unemployment benefits for even one week, your claim goes inactive and must be reopened. The state suggests reopening a claim on UI Online, which can be done at any time. There is a video tutorial produced by the state available here.Picard recommends reopening the claim as soon as possible. The following guide was provided by the Employment Development Department.d 1150

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - When Major League Baseball starts its season in empty stadiums, a local company will be the supplying crowd noise - from a video game.At the Padres exhibition game at Petco Park Monday, amid the empty stands, there was the distinct sound of a crowd."Our goal is to help create the most authentic experience we can during these times," said Ramone Russell, Communications and Brand Strategist at San Diego Studio, a branch of Sony Interactive Entertainment. The Sorrento Valley-based San Diego Studio, the creators of MLB's official video game, MLB The Show 20, were tasked with filling up the silence of the ballparks by calling on a large collection of real sounds."We've been going to games for the last 10 years, so we have a giant catalog of audio," said Russell. The catalog contains reactions to just about any kind of play, from a routine play to a home run blast. Each reaction has been digitally remastered for the stadium setting. League officials hoping those sounds will make players feel more comfortable."Baseball players are not used to competing in empty stadiums ... just hoping to providing a normalcy for them," said Russell.Stadium sound engineers for each home team will have access to 75 different effects and reactions."Every single major league baseball team will be able to watch the game in real time and slide those events and reactions up and down, so it sounds authentic," said Russell.Baseball is hoping the crowd noise, along with walk-up music, stadium announcers and in-stadium video, will replicate the in-game experience as much as possible. Many of the teams, including the Padres, will also have cardboard cutouts of fans in some parts of the stadium. 1712
