CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Extra security officers are in place at Eastlake High School in Chula Vista Friday due to confusion over a school threat at a similarly named school near Tampa, Florida.Pinellas County, Fla. deputies found an unspecific threat written on a wall of a girl’s bathroom at East Lake High School in Tarpon Springs Thursday, according to TampaBay.com. The threat, which was also posted on Snapchat, warned students not to come to school Friday.Word of the Florida threat spread on San Diego County social media pages Thursday night, according to Sweetwater Union High School District spokesperson Manuel Rubio. There is no credible threat to Eastlake High School, Rubio said.As a precaution, the local school added extra security officers on campus Friday. Families also received an automated phone call Friday morning to reassure them the campus was safe, according to Rubio. The written threat to Florida's East Lake High School has also been deemed not credible, said Pinellas County Sgt. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Chula Vista’s Police Chief and a city councilman hosted a public safety meeting in a community where most would think safety isn’t an issue. Chief Roxana Kennedy and Councilman John McCann met with several residents Wednesday night at the Montevalle Community Center.“I feel the balance is like this: Housing, people, lights, traffic, less parking and police protection and presence are here,” said Chula Vista resident Dianne Farsetta while holding one hand up and one hand down. “It is a little scary. We want to be in a safe environment.”Community groups on Facebook and Nextdoor appear to post more instances of crimes throughout the communities of Eastlake and Otay Ranch. Farsetta said the city is growing faster than its police force. However, Councilman McCann says the crime in his district is still less than half the crime level in other Chula Vista districts. Additionally, McCann said Chula Vista is still one of the safest cities of its size in the country. Nevertheless, McCann and Chief Kennedy listened to the community Wednesday night.“We want to make sure that we’re working with our police and our community to continue to make it as safe as it is,” he said.Farsetta and several others want to see more police on the streets and a police substation on the city’s eastern side. Headquarters is on the western side of the city.McCann said the city’s immediate need is more officers on patrol. He added he wants a substation but that the estimated million price tag is too much for Chula Vista. 1598
CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - A vandal that struck overnight in a Chula Vista neighborhood was apparently targeting high-end vehicles. The Jovel family first noticed something was wrong Sunday morning in front of their home along Via Escalante."Upsetting and bizarre," said Jesse Jovel. His sister saw a flat tire on his Mercedes SUV parked in the driveway and ran inside to tell him about it. Jovel came outside, saw the flat, but then found much more: scratches across the body and tires of the Mercedes."I thought it was not happening, that it was a joke," said Jovel. They ran to the street, where his sister's Mercedes was parked. "Her car was the same way, and the car behind it and the car behind it," said Jovel. One of those cars was Jovel's other vehicle, a Maserati Ghibli. It was also keyed all over. Two of its tires were sliced and flattened."Sad. Very sad that people are willing to do this just for the heck of it," said Jovel.Jovel says a total of at least six other vehicles were targeted. He barely looked at the others but remembers them being new and high-end vehicles. "It's not acceptable you are in a community you think it's safe and now you realize it's not safe," said Jovel.Anyone with information on the case is asked to call Chula Vista Police at 619-691-5151. 1293
