Students across the country are spelling their way to greatness in the Scripps National Spelling Bee program. Students are in the process of advancing from classroom to school to region to earn a spot in the national finals in National Harbor, Maryland, in May 2020. Spellers who win their school spelling bee but don’t advance past their region can keep their dream alive of competing in the national spotlight. For the third year in a row, the Bee is offering its RSVBee program. It is a participation pathway that qualifies more spellers for the national finals. It is the only way students living in unsponsored regions can advance and is an additional opportunity for the best spellers in the country to compete on the national stage.The Bee created RSVBee with an eye toward fairness, accessibility, maintaining the integrity of the competition and delivering a quality Bee Week experience for all. The Scripps National Spelling Bee has more than 250 sponsors across the country who support the program and make it possible for local students to advance. RICHMOND, Va. – Thousands of gun-rights activists and other groups crowded the streets around Virginia’s Capitol to protest plans by the state's Democratic leadership to pass gun-control legislation. Citing credible threats of violence, Gov. Ralph Northam declared a temporary state of emergency days ahead of Monday’s rally, banning all weapons including guns from Capitol Square, where the event was set to be held. Virginia's highest court has upheld the ban. The Supreme Court issued its decision late Friday, rejecting an appeal from gun-rights groups that said the ban violated their Second Amendment right to bear arms.The court did not rule on the merits of the case, however. The justices said they did not have enough information to decide whether a lower court judge had ruled appropriately. A new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found combined cases of syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia reached an all-time high in the United States in 2018.In Humboldt County, California, health officials say sexually transmitted diseases have been on the rise for five years in a row. “We went from 434 chlamydia cases in 2014 to 790 in 2018,” said Hava Phillips of Humboldt County Department of Health and Human Services. “But last year, we saw sharper spike in HIV and syphilis.”We’re learning Humboldt County’s STD statistics mirror national numbers.
