The Department of Justice this week is sending a strong message to American cities: if you can't stop crime, federal agents may be on the way.On Wednesday, Attorney General William Barr announced the launch of "Operation Legend" — named after a 4-year-old boy, LeGend Taliferrom, who was shot and killed while he was sleeping in Kansas City last month.Kansas City is one of several American cities dealing with an uptick in crime. According to the Department of Justice, violent crime is up 40% since last year, with at least 100 murders so far this year.The New York Times recently reported the top 25 largest American cities had seen a 16% increase in murders in recent months.What is "Operation Legend?"The mission will send around 100 FBI, ATF and DEA agents, as well as some U.S. Marshals, to Kansas City to aid in crime prevention.Agents are not expected to assume command of active investigations but rather serve as a deterrent to violent crime."Operation Legend will combine federal and local resources to combat the disturbing uptick in violence by surging federal agents and other federal assets into cities like Kansas City, a city currently experiencing its worst homicide rate in its history," Barr said in a statement.Kansas City will not likely be the last place federal agents go. The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff has confirmed a report by The Associated Press that some of the service members who deployed to Washington, D.C., last month in response to civil unrest were issued bayonets. Army Gen. Mark A. Milley confirmed the information in a letter sent to two Democratic U.S. representatives last month. The Pentagon letter comes as the AP also reports that members of the 82nd Airborne who deployed to Washington were not trained in riot response. The soldiers were scheduled to learn riot control tactics once arriving. The soldiers were ultimately not used and were sent back to their home base. 638

The family of Jacob Blake is hosting a gathering in Kenosha, Wisconsin on Tuesday ahead of President Donald Trump's visit to the city.The event, which will be held near the site where Blake was shot seven times in the back by a Kenosha police officer, will include a press conference with local officials and family representatives. The event will also include a community clean-up, a food drive, a healing circle, and a voter registration booth.Several days after police officers shot Blake during an Aug. 23 altercation, protests in Kenosha grew violent. The city estimates that million in property damages have been caused by looting and burning amid the unrest.Last Tuesday, 17-year-old Kyle Rittenhouse shot three protesters, two of them fatally, after he drove 20 miles to protect local businesses. At one point during the altercation, as Blake approached his car, Officer Rusten Sheskey shot Blake in the back at least seven times. The Florida Highway Patrol said 30-to-40 vehicles have flat tires Monday morning on Interstate 95 northbound from Lantana Road to the Okeechobee Boulevard exit in West Palm Beach. The vehicles have flat tires due to metal debris in the road from a semi.All of the vehicles are off to the side of the interstate.Scripps station WPTV in West Palm Beach flew over the area and did not spot any lane closures, but traffic is traveling slow in the area.Drivers should avoid using I-95 northbound in this area until all of the debris is cleaned up.  596
