ALPINE, Calif. (KGTV) - A fundraising campaign has been started to help an Alpine fire victim who gave up his chance to save his RV to help others.Jesus Mendoza returned home from work late Saturday afternoon to a towering wall of black and orange. Minutes later, fire crews arrived to tell him he had to evacuate."The smoke was really black, looked like an explosion behind the hillside," said Mendoza.For the past few years, he's been living in his RV on a property on Hidden Glen Road. He's been helping his landlord and friend since her husband passed away last year"She let me stay there. Made myself a promise that she comes first," said Mendoza.When it came time to evacuate, Mendoza says he helped his friend find boxes to pack, before helping round up her dog, cat, and 18 chickens from around her house. He then went to the home of a neighbor, who also needed help."She wasn't home. Helped retrieve her valuables, two dogs, and her vehicle," said Mendoza.The 40 minutes he spent helping would cost him. The RV needed gas and a battery, but he ran out of time. He and his landlord evacuated as the flames moved in. The next day, a neighbor sent him a video. Though his friend's home was spared, his RV was burned, along with his belongings. He had only grabbed a few photos of his kids and some clothes from the hamper. Also destroyed: his truck and a 1968 Ford Falcon he was restoring for his son. Remarkably, Mendoza says he's doing fine."Not upset, because I'm here, and those are just things," said Mendoza.Mendoza, who is a tree trimmer, says he is worried about losing all of his tools and climbing equipment. His friends starting a GoFundMe campaign. As of Thursday afternoon, it had raised more than ,700. Mendoza says he's beyond grateful."My mom taught me to treat others with the most respect, and it will come back to me. AKRON, Ohio -- His bags were packed and his plans had been made. But a 27-year-old man known for his effervescence and strong work ethic didn't make it home Wednesday night, the day before he was set to start a new job in a new state. Friends and family of Clintin Churby, who worked at Summit Racing, remain shell-shocked after a wrong-way driver killed him Wednesday night in Akron, Ohio.Shortly after 8 p.m. Wednesday, a 63-year-old man driving a pickup truck entered I-76 heading the wrong direction—eastbound in the westbound lanes—when he struck Churby near the top of the Central Interchange, according to Akron police. Churby was pronounced dead at the scene. The other driver was taken to Cleveland Clinic Akron General Medical Center where his condition remains unknown. While the accident remains under investigation, police said it appears that alcohol may have played a factor in the fatal wrong-way crash.According to Churby's mother, Sandi, Clintin had just finished a half-day at work at Summit Racing in anticipation of a promotion and transfer to a facility in Texas. Wednesday was his last day."He had it together. He was going to his next adventure. We were supposed to cry all night because he moved to Texas," Sandi said. "Now, we're going to cry forever."Sandi began to sense that something might be amiss when her son didn't come home between 8 and 9 p.m., his expected arrival. She initially thought that maybe he was tied up at work still saying goodbye to his friends and co-workers. She called. She left voicemails. She fired off text messages.She was met with silence until a knock came on the front door."[Clintin] was a hard worker. He worked for a living. He didn't drink for a living. The irony..." Sandi said as her voice trailed off. "He was an innocent boy that was going places. It's not right. It's not right. Clintin made everybody smile. He was a happy boy. He was going places, literally."Not much is known about the driver that cause the fatal crash. As of Thursday evening, formal charges have not been filed against the man. Police said in a news release Thursday that the investigation remains ongoing."I want [the wrong-way driver] to hear how many people he hurt. It's uncalled for. He drove for over a mile the wrong way at 8 p.m. at night. How do you do that? How do you get in your car, 63-years-old and drunk? How do you do that?" Sandi said. "I almost wish he was younger so he could suffer longer in jail. He's not going to be there long enough."Earlier this month, Clintin's closest friends joined him at a local campground to celebrate his new job and his new opportunity. Airbnb announced new rules for New Year's Eve to prevent parties and large gatherings at its properties amid a surge in coronavirus cases.The vacation rental company released its plan on Thursday to limit rentals in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Mexico, Australia, France, and Spain.The new measures state that Airbnb would require guests who don't have a positive review history to book a minimum of two nights for any stay, including Dec. 31. Any guests with reservations on Dec. 31 must swear that they will not throw a party under threat of legal charges.The company said that guests who have a history of positive reviews on Airbnb would not be subject to this restriction.The company said it would allow already-booked one-night reservations to continue as planned since their "data has historically shown that one-night New Year’s Eve bookings made prior to now very rarely lead to unauthorized parties." 936
