LOS ANGELES, April 27 (Xinhua) -- Air pollution poses a threat to the health of about 154 million Americans -- or more than half of the U.S. population, the American Lung Association (ALA) said on Wednesday.The air is so polluted in some areas that it is often dangerous to breathe, the ALA said in its annual report on air quality across the United States.About 48 percent of U.S. residents live in counties where smog (ozone) is too high, 20 percent live in areas where there are too many short-term spikes in pollution and six percent live in areas with harmful year-round soot (particle pollution), said the report.About 17 million Americans live in areas afflicted by all three air pollution hazards, the report noted.The report listed California as the most polluted state, where people are breathing some of the worst air.Compared with other states, California has more polluted places, including Los Angeles, Long Beach, Riverside, Bakersfield and Fresno, the report said.Honolulu in Hawaii and Santa Fe-Espanola in New Mexico are the only two cities in the nation that had no days in which smog and soot levels reached unhealthy ranges, making them the cleanest cities in the nation, said the report.Research suggests air pollution threatens human health -- and not just the lungs.Small particles of pollution can lodge deep in the lungs, triggering an inflammatory process that, over time, can spread elsewhere in the body and damage blood vessels and the heart, according to Dr. Norman Edelman, the ALA's chief medical officer.On days in which smog levels spike, there's an increase in hospital admissions for respiratory illnesses, heart attacks and stroke in the two or three days following it, said Michael Jerrett, a professor of environmental health sciences at University of California, Berkeley's School of Public Health.In addition to posing both long-term and short-term risks, pollution can also contribute to low birth weights, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, heart attack, stroke and, ultimately, shorter life spans, he warned.

WASHINGTON, April 29 (Xinhua) -- A U.S. appeals court ruled on Friday that the Obama administration can continue the taxpayer- funding for human embryonic stem cell research.The U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington overturned a preliminary federal court order that would have blocked the U.S. Health and Human Services Department and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) from spending government money on embryonic stem cells research."Today's ruling is a victory for our scientists and patients around the world who stand to benefit from the groundbreaking medical research they're pursuing," said Nicholas Papas, a White House spokesman.U.S. President Barack Obama has been trying to expand government funding for human embryonic stem cells research, saying that years of progress on finding cures for spinal cord injuries, Parkinson's disease and other diseases would be lost without the government support on this field.Opponents have been arguing the research is unacceptable because embryonic stem cells can only be obtained through destroying human embryos.Last August, a federal judge ruled that the government-backed embryonic stem cell research violated the law because embryos were destroyed in the process and it jeopardized the position of researchers using adult stem cells for winning federal grants.The government immediately appealed to the ruling, and the appeals court said the research could continue at the NIH before the judge ruled on the case.

BEIJING, May 10 (Xinhuanet) -- Researchers from California, Unated States, found that sexual orientation could play a role in cancer and more gay men are reported being cancer survivors than straight men, according to findings in the journal Cancer online Monday.The researchers found that gay men are 1.9 times more likely than straight men to report having had cancer. They also found that lesbian and bisexual women are more than twice as likely as heterosexual women to report fair or poor health after having cancer.Researchers looked at three years of responses to the California Health Interview survey, which included more than 120,000 adults living in the state.Among other health-related questions, participants were asked if they had ever been diagnosed with cancer and whether they identified as gay, lesbian, bisexual, or straight.Out of 51,000 men, about 3,700 said they had been diagnosed with cancer as an adult. While over 8 percent of gay men reported a history of cancer, that figure was only 5 percent in straight men, a disparity that could not be attributed to differences in race, age or income.About 7,300 out of 71,000 women in the study had been diagnosed with cancer, but overall cancer rates did not differ among lesbian, bisexual, and straight women.Ulrike Boehmer, the study's lead author from the Boston University School of Public Health, said higher rates of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) may be related to the increased risk of cancer in gay men.However, the findings do not necessarily mean that being gay, lesbian or bisexual increases risk of cancer, said the researcher.

More and more countries are realizing that space programs are closely linked with their people's lives than ever before.GAGARIN'S LEGACY INSPIRES PEACEFUL COOPERATION IN SPACEThe UN General Assembly adopted a resolution earlier this month that declares April 12 the International Day of Human Space Flight. The resolution has been supported by more than 60 countries."Man's space odyssey, the fruitful cooperation of many states in outer space would have been impossible without the very first step, Yuri Gagarin's flight," said Vitaly Churkin, Russia's permanent representative to the United Nations.However, the first human space flight was actually a result of competition between the East and the West at the height of the Cold War when the Berlin Wall was built.That competition gradually evolved, however, into a joint space project that has drawn more than 15 nations -- the International Space Station (ISS). Such a project would almost impossible to imagine before.The Mars-500 project in Moscow, aimed at testing the physical and psychological strains on humans during a 500-day journey to "Mars," is another good example of the international cooperation in scientific research. The experiment included six crew members from four countries, including Russia, China, France and Italy.Compared with the times of Gagarin, who died in a 1968 plane crash,mankind has changed its approach to space exploration, rendering it more pragmatic. That's according to cosmonaut Pavel Vinogradov, now a deputy head of the Space Flight Center in the Energy Rocket-Space Corporation."Early romanticism and space race have gone. LOS ANGELES, May 14 (Xinhua) -- Thousands of visitors, many of them children, went to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California for the annual open house Saturday to experience the excitement in explorations.To many visitors, the open house is a rare opportunity to see the federally funded research and development center and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) field center, which is close to the public. JPL is managed by California Institute of Technology.The event, themed "The Excitement in Explorations," provides visitors with the chance to share in the wonders of space through high-definition and 3-D videos, live demonstrations, interactions with scientists and engineers, and a first look at JPL's new Earth Science Center.The Earth Science Center showcases the home planet and JPL's Earth science missions. Since it was the first time open to the public, it attracted many visitors who had to wait for over an hour to get admitted.Visitors first passed by two touchscreens located on opposite walls of the facility that control real-time views of "Eyes on the Earth," an interactive 3-D visualization website. Visitors also had the opportunity to watch a movie in the 3-D theater, which seats up to 40 people.Other Open House highlights include: A chance to see the most unique car in this world before it leaves Earth: The next rover bound for Mars, Mars Science Laboratory/Curiosity, in the "clean room" before it is shipped to Florida for a November 2011 launch.JPL further runs its own "reality TV show" via live-streaming webcam: http://www.ustream.tv/nasajpl.The life-size rover models in a "Mars" test bed is another attraction and a perennial crowd-pleaser. Named the Robo-Dome, it is where visitors could see a pair of 700-pound robots gliding in a high-tech arena under artificial stars.The Robo-Dome is used to simulate complex maneuvers that could be used for future space missions.The year 2011 is an exciting year for JPL's robotic explorers. In the past twelve months, two spacecraft made close encounters of comets. This summer, the Dawn spacecraft will arrive at the giant asteroid Vesta.In 2011, JPL will launch the Aquarius satellite studying Earth' s ocean, the Juno mission to Jupiter, the Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory's twin spacecraft to Earth's moon, and JPL's next-generation rover - Mars Science Laboratory's Curiosity.
