HANOI, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates on Monday accepted an invitation to visit China early next year, a Chinese official said.Chinese Defense Minister Liang Guanglie extended the invitation during his talks here with Gates, Guan Youfei, a Chinese Defense Ministry official, told a press conference.Although very brief, the meeting showed that both sides attach great importance to developing military ties between the two countries, and was helpful to enhance mutual understanding and trust, he said. The tete-a-tete between the two defense chiefs was their first since bilateral military ties soured in January following Pentagon's decision to sell a 6.4-billion-dollar arms package to China's Taiwan province. While noting the setback, Guan said that ties between the two militaries have never ceased moving forward, and dialogues and exchanges under some established frameworks will continue.Beijing and Washington will hold their annual consultations on maritime security in Hawaii later this week, which will be followed by a new round of annual defense consultations in Washington, he added. The schedule has not been fixed for the Washington meeting, which is to be co-hosted by Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Ma Xiaotian and U.S. Under-Secretary of Defense Michele Flournoy, Guan said.Commenting on the on-again-off-again military ties between China and the United States, Guan stressed that the main obstacle is Washington's arms sales to Taiwan.During talks with Gates, the Chinese defense minister said it is important for the two countries to respect each other's core interests and major concerns, consolidate mutual trust and decrease suspicion and misjudgment, and properly settle differences and sensitive issues in order to keep bilateral military ties in a healthy track.

LONDON, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- Some western commentators' critical comments concerning China's burgeoning relationship with Africa are "largely misplaced," says a Financial Times editorial.Wednesday's editorial - "China's new scramble for Africa" - said Western-led development strategies, however well meaning, did not break the cycle of under-development in Africa. Chinese investments, made for sound business reasons and boosting employment and growth, offer new hope and an alternative way forward, the editorial said. The infrastructure that the Chinese are building will also have positive spin-off effects for industries outside of natural resources. Chinese traders have brought cheap consumer goods to Africa. And, as labor costs rise at home, Chinese manufacturers may look at Africa with new interest, as a base for production, the editorial said.To the Western countries that uphold the spirit of competition, there's no reason to complain about China's strengthening its relationship with Africa, the editorial said. One reason that African governments often love doing business with the Chinese is that they are much less likely to condition their investments on improvements in government, and the pragmatic attitude of the Chinese government should be appreciated, the editorial said.

RAMALLAH, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Middle East envoy Wu Sike on Thursday met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah, discussing the bilateral relations and the current status of Israeli-Palestinian peace talks.Referring to the Palestinian issue as the core of the Middle East issue, Wu said that China firmly supports the Palestinian people's efforts for their national rights.China urges Israel and the Palestinians, based on the relative U.N. resolutions, the principle of "Land for Peace," the Arab Peace Initiative and the "Road Map for Peace" plan, to solve their disputes through negotiations, and to establish a Palestinian state with independent and full sovereignty, thus realizing the peaceful coexistence of the two sides, the envoy added.China's Middle East Special Envoy Wu Sike (L) meets with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank city of Ramallah, on Oct. 14, 2010.Wu said that China, deeply concerned about the ongoing stalemate in the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, supports the current direct talks and understands the Palestinians' position on the Jewish settlement issue, and urged the parties to push forward the peace process with constructive measures.Israel and the Palestinians resumed direct negotiations early September. However, the talks were halted when Israeli settlers restarted building in the West Bank after Sept. 26, when Israel's 10-month settlement construction moratorium ended. The Palestinian National Authority has made clear that it will enter the parley only if Israeli government extends the freeze.Regarding the Palestinian internal reconciliation, the envoy said that China supports the reconciliation process, urging the Palestinian fractions to resolve their differences through dialogue and negotiation.During the meeting, Abbas speaks highly of the active role that China has played in promoting the Middle East peace process, and China's long-term support and assistance to the Palestinians. The Palestinian side is willing to, with the support of relative parties and international community, make efforts to solve the difficulties facing the peace talks and push the negotiations to move in a positive direction.Wu also met with Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Malki and Chief Negotiator Saeb Erekat on Thursday, after holding talks with Israeli officials one day earlier.
