XIANGNING, Shanxi, April 11 (Xinhua) -- The death toll in the flooded Wangjialing coal mine in north China's Shanxi Province rose to 28 after one more body was recovered Saturday afternoon.Rescuers are searching for the 10 miners who remained missing, the rescue headquarters said.About 280,000 cubic meters of water had been pumped out by Saturday, more than two times of the planned volume, said the spokesman Liu Dezheng at a press conference. The water in section two had been all drained up and the search work there had been finished, Liu said.More than 60,000 meters of water had been pumped out in section one, nearly four times than planned, but the water level fell much slower than expected, Liu said.Toxic gas also brought great difficulties to rescue work, he said.A total of 261 miners were working below ground when the mine was flooded on March 28, and 108 miners escaped unharmed while 153 were trapped underground. On Monday, 115 miners were brought out of the mine alive after being trapped for more than a week. They are receiving medical care in five hospitals in Hejin and Taiyuan Cities.

SHANGHAI, April 3 (Xinhua) -- Environment authorities in Shanghai will ban burning waste straw in the suburban agricultural areas to ensure air quality during the World Expo period. The Shanghai Municipal Environment Protection Bureau will use satellite remote sensing to monitor the burning of waste straw during the Expo period from May 1 to Oct. 31, the bureau said in a statement Saturday.Statistics show that about 170,000 hectares of barley, wheat, paddy and rape are planted in the suburban agricultural areas of Shanghai, which can produce up to 1.3 million tonnes of waste straw every year, according to the bureau.Burning waste straw will produce carbon dioxide and other pollutants to pollute the air, it said.To help dispose of the waste straw, more than 40 organic fertilizer plants in Shanghai have planned to use more straw as auxiliary material in fertilizer production, the bureau said. The Shanghai World Expo, with the theme of "Better City, Better Life," is expected to draw 70 million visitors from around the world during the six-month period.

BEIJING, May 31 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Sunday called for the proper handling of the serious consequences of the March sinking of a South Korean warship, and efforts to gradually ease tensions in the region over the incident."The pressing task for the moment is to properly handle the serious impact caused by the Cheonan incident, defuse tensions in the region, and most importantly of all, avoid possible conflicts," Wen said.Wen was speaking at a joint press conference following a two-day summit meeting with South Korean President Lee Myung-bak and Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama on the South Korean resort island.Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao attends the second phase of the third trilateral summit in South Korea's southern resort island of Jeju on May 30, 2010. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, South Korean President Lee Myung-bak and Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama met in the trilateral summit with the aim of mapping out future cooperation in East Asia.Wen urged the Northeast Asian nations to help maintain regional peace and stability."We must spare no effort to promote peace and stability in Northeast Asia. Short of this precondition, development will be out of the question, and the hard-won achievements will be lost again," he stressed."China will continue to enhance communication with relevant parties (over the Cheonan incident) in order to steer the situation toward a direction which is conducive to peace and stability in Northeast Asia. This is in our best common and long-term interests," Wen said.As the region is facing many new challenges, China, Japan and South Korea should strengthen coordination between them, appropriately deal with sensitive issues and increase mutual political trust, Wen said.

YICHUAN, Henan, April 6 (Xinhua) -- The death toll after a central China mine blast last week has risen to 40,with 6 still missing, local authorities said on Tuesday. An official with the rescue headquarters confirmed Tuesday that 98 people were working underground in the Guomin coal mine in Yichuan county when the blast occurred at 7:20 p.m. on March 31. 57 were lifted to the ground unharmed, 35 were killed and six are still missing. The explosion also killed five and injured one on the ground, the official said. The illegal coal mine owned by village head Wang Guozheng was poorly managed and even does not have a payroll list. That's why the dead and missing could not be identified, the official said.Ten people allegedly accountable for the accident are under control by police, including mine owner Wang Guozheng, who was previously given a reprieved imprisonment sentence in 2009 for covering up a mine accident.Work safety authorities ordered the mine to suspend operations after a gas outburst on May 1, 2009. Production ever since has been illegal, said a statement from the Henan Provincial Administration of Work Safety.
