Veterinarians have a warning for pet owners about an ingredient in some foods — including peanut butter — that can be toxic to your pet.It's a sweetener, called xylitol, that's found in different brands of peanut butter, and it can make your pet sick, or even kill them. The ingredient can also cause liver failure."It's kind of horrible to think about because it's common knowledge — everyone gives their dog peanut butter," Laura Lovely said.Lovely said it's devastating to learn her dog Sweetie's favorite snack could send her to the emergency room."Whenever she wants kind of a healthy treat, because it has a lot of protein, and when she takes her medication," Lovely said.It's a food Lovely said she and Sweetie both enjoy."Xylitol is a wonderful low calorie sweetener for you and me but it can be deadly for our dogs," veterinarian Dr. Christopher Byers said.It's not just in peanut butter. Byers said you'll find xylitol in a number of products."Certain brands of peanut butter, toothpaste, certain gums, certain breath mints," Byers said.He said your dog can be exposed to it by accident."One of the more common gums that we encounter in the emergency room is Orbit," Byers said. "Orbit is a great product, but it does contain xylitol."Within a half-hour, he said, your dog's blood sugar will start to plummet."They can be lethargic. They can collapse. They can even have seizures," Byers said.So it's essential for all dog owners to check labels, he said."I think it's awful," Lovely said. "if it's not healthy for dogs, how is it supposed to be healthy for us as well?" Byers said they see xylitol intoxication in dogs several times a week, and that if you see the signs, get your dog to the emergency room as soon as possible. 1791

But on Monday, riders were on the lookout for a pair of goats.According to the New York's Metro Transportation Authority, a pair of goats were spotted roaming subway tracks in Brooklyn on Monday morning.According to WNBC-TV, the goats were first spotted on N train tracks near Green-Wood Cemetery. Police and animal control responded to capture the two animals.The MTA originally said that the goats were not affecting service, but WNBC later reported that trains were rerouted to allow officials to capture the goats.The goats were reportedly tranquilized and taken to an animal shelter.In a tweet on Monday, the MTA called the two delinquent goats " very baaaaad boys."  792

Tropical storm conditions were expected to begin Monday morning in parts of Texas and Louisiana as Tropical Storm Beta slowly worked its way into a part of the country that’s already been drenched and battered during this year’s exceptionally busy hurricane season.No longer expected to gain hurricane strength, forecasters also decreased estimated rainfall totals from Beta early Monday, saying in a U.S. National Hurricane Center advisory that up to 15 inches (38 centimeters) of rain could fall in some areas. That’s down from earlier predictions of up to 20 inches (51 centimeters).Maximum sustained winds also decreased to 50 mph (85 kph) Monday morning. Beta was moving west at 6 mph (9 kph), forecasters said.It was the system’s slow movement and storm surge were generating concerns in coastal communities. Storm surge up to 5 feet (1.5 meters) was forecast from San Luis Pass to Sabine Pass in Texas.Beta was set to make landfall along Texas’ central or upper Gulf Coast late Monday night, forecasters said. (KGTV) -- Two people died early Sunday morning after a wrong-way driver crashed head-on into another vehicle shortly after a pursuit.The incident began when Valley Center Sheriff’s Deputies located a Honda Accord reported stolen out of Escondido.Deputies began pursuing the vehicle but, due to weather conditions and speed, decided to end the pursuit.RELATED: CHP investigates scene of fatal wrong-way crash on I-5 off-rampAuthorities continued to track the suspect using areal support. U.S. Senators Ron Johnson and James Lankford are backtracking on a proposed amendment that would have replaced Columbus Day with Juneteenth Day as a federal holiday.On July 1, Johnson and Lankford filed an amendment to a bipartisan bill that would make Juneteenth a federal holiday. The amendment filed by Johnson and Lankford proposed to replace Columbus Day with Juneteenth as a federal holiday, in order to not add an additional federal holiday that would impact federal services and local businesses.On July 3, Johnson and Lankford said they were withdrawing the proposed amendment and introducing a modified substitute amendment that would reduce the number of paid leave days for federal employees.“Although the substitute amendment I offered to the Juneteenth holiday bill had the desired effect of slowing down the passage of a new paid day off for federal workers, many were not happy with the proposal to swap a holiday celebrating emancipation with Columbus Day,” said Johnson in a news release Friday. “Let me reiterate: I suggested Columbus Day for the swap because few Americans in the private sector get it as a paid holiday, and as a result, it is lightly celebrated, and would not be disruptive to most Americans’ schedules. I was in no way deprecating Christopher Columbus’ achievements or expressing any value judgment regarding his place in history. As I stated in an interview with the Milwaukee Press Club last Friday, I do not support efforts to erase America’s rich history, not the good, the bad or the ugly."Federal employees are given 10 paid holidays a year.
