XI'AN, July 17 (Xinhua) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel continued Saturday her visit in Xi'an, capital of China' s northwestern Shaanxi Province.During the visit, Merkel and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao held talks with heads of prestigious German and Chinese firms, and visited China-German joint venture Siemens Signaling Company Ltd.Merkel also held a meeting with the acting Governor of the Shaanxi Province Zhao Zhengyong.Zhao said the Sino-German cooperation taking place in Shaanxi had enjoyed great achievements during recent years, as there had been about 60 Sino-German joint ventures operating in the province.Merkel said more and more German businessman were looking forward to getting involved in China's "West Development" campaign, and she believed the bilateral cooperation will be pushed forward in the future.The acting governor gave Merkel a horse sculpture as a birthday gift, for Merkel's 56th birthday falls on this Saturday.Merkel was born in the year of the horse, according to the Chinese traditional calendar.During her stay in Xi'an, Angela Merkel also visited a cultural theme park, and the renowned Terra-cotta Warriors and Horses in the mausoleum of Qinshihuang, the first emperor of an united China.Merkel will leave Xi'an on Sunday Morning and wrap up her four-day official visit to China.

ISLAMABAD, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- The second batch of humanitarian aid from China began to arrive in the Chaklala Airbase near Islamabad on Thursday, bringing relief materials to flood-ravaged Pakistan.The shipment mainly consisted of daily necessities, including 1, 200 tents, 30 tonnes of compacted rations, 23,800 blankets, 1,000 generators, as well as medicine, bottled water and water purification equipment.The second batch of the relief goods worth 50 million yuan (7.4 million U.S. dollars) will be completely delivered by Friday, according to the Chinese Ministry of Commerce.Accepting the help from China, Sibtain Fazal Haleem, the Secretary of Economic Affairs Department, said that China was the first country to deliver relief goods to Pakistan in this time of need, reflecting the special friendly relations between the two neighboring nations.Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Liu Jian said that China is willing to help the flood-hit Pakistanis to weather the unprecedented disaster, and that China hopes the Pakistani government can make smooth advance in rescue, relief and reconstruction.On Aug. 4, the first batch of humanitarian aid from China worth 10 million yuan was delivered to Pakistan.Pakistan kicked off an emergency rescue and relief operation on July 30 after declaring an emergency in the flood-struck northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.So far, the country's worst floods in 80 years have killed 1, 556 people and left 20 million homeless, according to a government report released on Thursday.

BEIJING, July 5 (Xinhua) -- China and Britain on Monday pledged to enhance military ties.The pledge came out of the meeting between Vice Chairman of China's Central Military Commission Guo Boxiong and visiting British Chief of Defense Staff Jock Stirrup.The military relationship is an important component of China-Britain relations, and the two sides have witnessed frequent exchange of high-level visits and fruitful cooperation in many fields, Guo said.He said China's armed forces attached importance to the friendly cooperation with the British armed forces, and would work with it to enhance mutual trust and expand cooperation.Stirrup echoed Guo saying the military relationship was very important and the British side hoped to strengthen military cooperation with China.The two sides also discussed the development of China-Britain relations and international and regional issues of common concern.Highlighting the development of China-Britain relations in recent years, Guo said the bilateral relationship is at a new historic starting point. XI'AN, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu has urged local authorities to keep flood casualties and losses to minimum and to launch reconstruction work in a timely and orderly way.Hui was speaking during an inspection of flood-affected areas in Weinan and Shangluo cities in north China's Shaanxi Province from Aug. 2 to 3.He visited affected residents, as well as soldiers who were fighting the floods, saying the flood work had entered a crucial stage.Since mid July, many areas in Shaanxi Province have seen continuous rain, leading to frequent natural disasters, such as floods, mountain torrents and mud-rock flows.Continuous rainstorms caused mud-rock flows in Zhulinguan Village of Danfeng County, Shangluo city, on July 23 and 24. Hui visited the village and urged officials to address food, drinking water, clothing and housing issues.He also called for the repair of roads and resumption of water and electricity supplies as soon as possible.Homes, schools and hospitals should be reconstruction priorities, he said.Meteorologists forecast higher than average rainfall this month along the province's Hanjiang and Weihe rivers. Hui ordered local governments to intensify flood warnings, improve response plans, reinforce reservoirs and river embankments and replenish emergency materials, so as to be well prepared for more rain and floods. 

HARARE, July 7 (Xinhua) --The eighth session of the Zimbabwe/ China joint permanent commission ended in Harare on Wednesday with a pledge by the two countries to widen and deepen economic cooperation.The two countries discussed ways of enhancing various cooperation projects already being implemented and new ones in the energy, agriculture, manufacturing, transport, tourism and water sectors.An agreement was also signed for China to provide 1.5 million U. S. dollars to the China-Zimbabwe Friendship Hospital in Mahusekwa, Mashonaland East Province, for medical equipment and drugs.The hospital is part of the several projects that include two primary schools and an agricultural demonstration center that China is constructing in Zimbabwe as part of the eight measures agreed to at the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit in 2006 in Beijing.Other support from China includes a 200 million U.S. dollars buyer's credit facility extended by the China Exim Bank for procurement of agricultural inputs to boost food production in Zimbabwe.Zimbabwean foreign minister Simbarashe Mumbengegwi praised China for setting a shining example to other world donors by honoring pledges it made to assist Zimbabwe under the Forum for China-Africa Cooperation.Mumbengegwi noted that under the eight measures enunciated by Chinese President Hu Jintao at the FOCAC heads of state summit in Beijing in 2006, projects earmarked for Zimbabwe are now at various stages of completion.The Chinese government has also dispatched 10 agricultural experts and 23 volunteers to buttress the cooperation."By successfully implementing these measures, China has set a shining example for other donors and international cooperating partners who do not always honor their commitments," Mumbengegwi said at the opening of the eight session.He said Zimbabwe is also willing to learn and benefit from China's experience and expertise in the economic sphere, which has transformed the country into a global economic powerhouse."Zimbabwe will, therefore, welcome Chinese investment and is ready to discuss during the joint commission specific projects in the energy, agriculture, manufacturing, transport, tourism and water sectors," he said.Mumbengegwi thanked China Exim Bank for extending the 200 million U.S. dollars buyer's credit loan repayment period from five to eight years, saying this would give Zimbabwe the breathing space to turn around its economy and enhance capacity to repay loans extended by China."The payment of the arrears and extension of the repayment period on the 200 million U.S. dollars buyer's credit loan have paved the way for increased cooperation between Zimbabwe and China, " he said.While hailing China as a good example of a reliable and dependent donor partner, Mumbengegwi said he hoped the Asian country will similarly implement new eight measures announced by Premier Wen Jiabao at the fourth ministerial conference of FOCAC held in Egypt last year.He said the projects that have been identified for implementation in Zimbabwe are in critical sectors of energy, water, health, education, agriculture and social infrastructure.
