HETIAN, Xinjiang, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese political advisor Jia Qinglin here Saturday called for greater efforts by local religious circles in Hetian, in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, to contribute to the long-term stability and development of Xinjiang.When meeting with representatives of local religious circles during his visit to Hetian, Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), listened to their advice and opinions.Speaking highly of the contributions of patriotic religious personages, Jia said Party committees and governments at all levels in Xinjiang have always attached great importance to the education and cultivation of religious believers, showed care for their lives and work, and given great support to their religious activities.Citing a roadmap outlined by the central work conference on Xinjiang's development held in May, Jia urged Xinjiang's religious circles to help consolidate national unity and harmonious religious relations.Jia also asked them to resist and eliminate the influence of religious extremism in their religious activities.

BEIJING, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- Tropical storm "Dianmu" along with gusty winds will strengthen precipitation in north China as it moves north, the national meteorological agency warned on Monday.The typhoon, started Sunday night in the sea about 400 kilometers east of Taiwan, is expected to complicate flood-control efforts in northeast China, where torrential rain-triggered floods have left more than 100 people dead and missing.Heavy rains will hit parts of northeast China's Liaoning, Jilin and Heilongjiang provinces on Tuesday. Northwest China's Gansu and Shaanxi provinces will also be affected, said the National Meteorological Center.The typhoon, the fourth this year, was moving northeast at a speed of 25 km per hour. Its center was located about 390 km east of Zhejiang Province's coast Monday afternoon and will approach southern coast of the Korean Peninsula on Tuesday, said the center.
BEIJING, June 11 (Xinhua) -- China's retail sales, the main gauge of consumer spending in the world's fastest-growing economy, rose 18.7 percent year on year to 1.25 trillion yuan (183 billion U.S. dollars) in May, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) announced Friday.The growth rate was 3.5 percentage points higher than the same period last year and 0.2 percentage points higher than April's, said NBS spokesman Sheng Laiyun.Urban consumption hit 1.08 trillion yuan in May, up 19.1 percent year on year, while rural residents spent 163.7 billion yuan, up 15.8 percent. The growth rate was 3.2 percentage points higher than the same period last year.The government rolled out a series of incentives to bolster consumption to counter the fallout from the global economic downturn, including subsidies for home appliances in rural areas and tax breaks for auto purchases, in early 2009, among others.China's auto sales in May rose 28.35 percent from a year earlier to 1.44 million units, bringing combined sales in the first five months to 7.6 million units, up 53.25 percent from a year earlier.Monthly sales of home appliances in China's countryside surged 220 percent year on year in May to 12.6 billion yuan. The figure for January-May period was 54.35 billion yuan, up 400 percent from year on year.
