With Election Day right around the corner, Mattel has unveiled their latest addition to its "Inspiring Women" series - Susan B. Anthony. The toy company said that it wanted to honor Anthony for her "pioneering efforts and far-reaching impact" in the fight for women having the right to vote."On November 5, 1872, while protesting and leading the charge for women's voting rights, Susan B. Anthony made a defiant move," Mattel said on its website. "She voted in the presidential election and was arrested at her home in Rochester, NY."Because Anthony helped pave the way, the 19th Amendment was passed in 1920, which gave women everywhere the right to vote.Last week, the National Susan B. Anthony Museum and House unveiled the doll inside Anthony's home.In a press release, Deborah L. Hughes, President & CEO of the Anthony Museum, said they were delighted to hear from Mattel's design team about constructing a doll that would reflect "Susan B. Anthony's life and work."The doll's launch in 2020 makes it extra unique since it marks the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment passing, Anthony's 200th birthday, and the museum's 75th anniversary. The doll comes dressed in a floor-length black and lace dress, accented with glasses, and a lace collar fastened with a cameo brooch. The doll is available for a limited time only and sells for .99 on Mattel's website. 1378

With COVID-19 cases surging across most of the country, teachers are weighing whether it’s safe for them to return to the classroom while at the same time, trying to make sure their students don’t slip through the cracks because of the virus. In a virtual town hall-style meeting, four educators from across the country gathered to share their thoughts, concerns and excitement about the upcoming school year. The overriding theme: parents and students will need to be flexible.“We’re going to ask you for grace for this entire year. We want to teach your children, but when we voice concerns it’s not because we’re lazy and we don’t want to work, it’s because we want to make sure our families are safe, too,” said Rachel Sandoval, an elementary school teacher in Colorado.Sandoval’s school was forced to close back in March because of COVID-19. She knows her students have lost out on valuable in-person learning time because of the virus, but she’s also worried that gathering students back in a classroom setting this coming fall could give the virus a perfect environment to spread in.“We can’t do the same thing we did last year. The world has changed. Everything has changed,” she said. Her concern was echoed by other teachers who joined the virtual town hall.Steph MacPhail teachers 5th grade in Minnesota. As a mom, she’s struggled to juggle a full-time teaching job, while at the same time, taking care of her two young boys.“I felt really burned out this spring from a teacher perspective and from a parent perspective,” she said. While McaPhail misses her students, she worries that COVID-19 cases will continue to surge if kids go back to school.“Kids and families want to go back to normal, but this is going to be anything but normal, and that’s scary,” she said.Across the country, many school districts are choosing to start the year virtually, which brings another set of challenges. Some kids don’t have adequate internet access or access to a computer that they can use to access online classes.“We need to make sure kids are still staying engaged while at the same time dealing with these environmental factors. For a lot of students in poverty-stricken areas, having the one interaction at school is so critically important,” said Dr. Kenyae Reese, who serves as a principal in Nashville, Tennessee.Dr. Reese’s district is one of those starting the school year entirely online. She’s asked her teachers to be flexible. In some instances, she says she’s talked to students who might be embarrassed to turn on their camera during a Zoom call because of the home they live in. Other students in her high school are taking care of younger siblings, all while trying to keep up with classwork.“We’re changing the landscape of a whole generation, what they know about school and how they interact with people,” Dr. Reese said. With all the uncertainty, though, every teacher still expressed joy and excitement about whatever the upcoming school year brings, including Phillip Starostka, who teaches elementary school in Arizona.“We are working as hard as possible and will do everything we can to make it seamless,” he said. 3145

WILMINGTON — President-elect Joe Biden has announced top White House staff positions Tuesday, drawing from the senior ranks of his campaign and some of his closest confidants. Biden confirmed that former campaign manager Jen O’Malley Dillon will serve as a deputy chief of staff. Campaign co-chair Louisiana Rep. Cedric Richmond and campaign adviser Steve Ricchetti will also play senior roles in the new administration. Richmond will leave his Louisiana congressional seat to fill the White House job. A former chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, Richmond was among Biden’s earliest high-profile supporters and served as his campaign co-chair.Anthony Bernal, who was Chief of Staff to Dr. Jill Biden on the campaign trail was named her Senior Advisor. Dr. Biden's Chief of Staff will be Julissa Reynoso Pantaleon. Other hires announced Tuesday include: Mike Donilon as the new Senior Advisor to the President, Dana Remus as Counsel to the President, Julie Rodriguez as Director of the White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs, and Annie Tomasini as Director of Oval Office Operations. The new hires represent an initial wave of what will ultimately be hundreds of new White House aides hired in the coming weeks. WINDSOR, Ontario — Caesars Windsor Hotel and Casino is temporarily closed due to a labor dispute with a local union.According to the company's website, the closure is the result of a labor disruption. A message on the site says, "At this time, hotel reservations booked between Friday, April 6 until Thursday, April 12 have been canceled."The Unifor Local 444 Facebook page says there was a tentative deal in place as of April 3 but that fell through. On Thursday night, only 41 percent of union members voted in favor of the new deal, which caused the strike. The 444 handles everything from janitors and food/waitstaff to hotel clerks. The casino says that Friday’s Johnny Reid concert has been postponed. Ticketholders can use their tickets when the show is rescheduled, or get a refund. However, tickets purchased at the Caesars box office will not be refunded until it reopens following the labor dispute. Right now, the casino says all other shows are scheduled until further notice. It's not clear how long the employee strike will last. The last strike at the casino happened in April of 2004 and lasted about 40 days. The casino released this statement: 1166

When a hidden camera snapped a picture of Cross River gorillas including several infants in Nigeria this summer, conservationists were thrilled. This subspecies of gorilla is one of the most endangered, with only an estimated 300 individual animals believed to exist. They live along the border of Nigeria and Cameroon, in western Africa. The Wildlife Conservation Society captured images of the Cross River gorillas in Nigeria’s Mbe Mountains in May and June. Their camera traps have only captured images of Cross River gorillas a handful of times since being set up in 2012. They said this was the first time they had seen multiple infants in the same group. 666
