Barbie dolls have long inspired young girls with their beauty and fashion sense. Now they're inspiring them with their brains and bravado, too.On Tuesday, just ahead of International Women's Day, Barbie introduced a batch of new dolls based on real-life figures.The new dolls came after Mattel, maker of Barbie, conducted a survey of 8,000 mothers around the globe and found that 86% are worried about the kind of role models their daughters are exposed to."Girls have always been able to play out different roles and careers with Barbie and we are thrilled to shine a light on real life role models to remind them that they can be anything," wrote Lisa McKnight, senior vice president and general manager of Barbie, in a news release.This week Mattel introduced dolls in two separate series of Barbies: "Inspiring Women," based on historical figures, and new additions to its "Shero" line of dolls named for inspirational contemporary women.Both lines reflect the Barbie brand's highest honor: a one-of-a-kind doll made in a real woman's likeness.Inspiring WomenThe "Inspiring Women" dolls come with educational information about the contributions each woman made to society.One is Amelia Earhart, the first female aviator to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. Frida Kahlo, the renowned Mexican artist and activist, will be another.Barbie will also honor Katherine Johnson, a pioneer in mathematics who broke barriers of race and gender. One of the characters in the hit movie "Hidden Figures," Johnson was among a pool of women hired by NASA to work as human "computers" for the first US-manned flight into space.Although the "Inspiring Women" series only has three dolls so far, it will grow with the release of new dolls, said Marissa Beck, spokeswoman for Mattel."The Inspiring Women Series pays tribute to incredible heroines of their time; courageous women who took risks, changed rules, and paved the way for generations of girls to dream bigger than ever before," Beck wrote in an email to CNN.SheroesBarbie's "Shero" program began in 2015 to highlight real women who have broken boundaries in their field.This week, Barbie released 14 new Shero dolls, including ones based on "Wonder Woman" director Patty Jenkins and US snowboarder Chloe Kim, who just won a gold medal at the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang. BRANSON, Mo. -- Branson, Missouri, draws tens of thousands of visitors each year for its museums, rides, live shows and family activities. But behind the attractions and the flashing lights, families struggle to get by.“It’s a company town, and the company is tourism,” said Kevin Huddleston of Christian Action Ministries. “Everyone works for tourism in some way. They’re not really jobs that people can raise a family on, but that’s what people are trying to do.” Huddleston runs a food bank that helps many of Branson’s families, especially through the winter months when many attractions are closed and most tourists are gone.“Our unemployment spikes to 20%,” said Bryan Stallings of the lack of jobs during the off-season in Branson. Stallings helps run the non-profit Elevate Branson, which helps families get jobs and services they need.The tourists usually come back with the warmer weather, but this year, COVID-19 came instead, skyrocketing hunger higher than ever before.“Just at the time when people were getting their callbacks to work or expecting to get their callbacks to work, they got their layoff notices this year,” said Huddleston. “So it was a double whammy.”Huddleston said his group normally serves food to about 4,000 families per month, but during the pandemic, they’ve seen more than 5,000 and 6,000 families per month. “The demand for service was unprecedented,” he said. “It was so high we had never seen the numbers we were seeing.”Aaron Taylor has visited Christian Action Ministries several times for assistance. He said standing in line is a painful reminder of his reality.“The coronavirus has completely destroyed what I came to Branson for,” said Taylor. “I came to Branson to get sober.” Taylor worked with a local hotel chain doing construction, hoping he could start a new chapter.“The day that coronavirus hit, I was laid off,” he said. “After losing my job, became homeless, lost the kids to state custody because I wasn’t able to take care of them. My kids deserve better than that.” He said places like the food bank have kept his family afloat, but now, he said he feels like he’s drowning.“It’s taken me a depression level and a shame level where I’m no longer sober, and I, for the last month, I haven’t even had the desire to be sober,” said Taylor.His struggle is not the only pain in the parking lot.“It’s gotten hard on us because there’s not a lot of income coming into the household,” said Jonathan Wayne Robinette Sr. who lives in Branson and works at a local hotel.“We have no public transpiration, we are 1,300 units short of having affordable housing, and we’re seasonal low-wage jobs because it’s based on seasonal jobs and tourism so it kind of creates this perfect storm of poverty,” said Stallings.For some, there is hope. “God willing, it gets better,” said Robinette Sr. “We just take it one day at a time.” Yet, for many in the tourist town, this pandemic has shown no mercy. “I don’t necessarily understand communities like Branson,” said Taylor. “It’s probably time for me to leave.” 3056

BUFFALO, N.Y. — A Buffalo man seen in cell phone video being punched in the head repeatedly by a Buffalo police officer plans to sue the city, the police department, the police commissioner and both officers involved in his arrest.An attorney representing Quentin Suttles, 30, has filed a notice of claim in State Supreme Court. Suttles claims Buffalo Police Officers Ronald Ammerman and Michael Scheu used excessive force when they pulled him over and arrested him on May 10.The arrest, which was recorded on a bystander's cell phone video and police body cameras, shows one of the officers punching Suttles in the head repeatedly while he is on the ground.The claim also accuses the city, the police department and Buffalo Police Commissioner Byron Lockwood of not providing officers with proper use of force training and not providing adequate supervision of their actions.According to the claim, Ammerman and Scheu followed Suttles' vehicle for several minutes and pulled him over after he "committed a minor traffic offense." Police said Suttles was going the wrong way down a one-way street.During a search of Suttles after he stepped out of his car, the claim states the officers "had engaged in prolonged grabbing of his genitals while finding no contraband. The officers...then grabbed his hands and while throwing him to the ground advised that his hands need to be out of his pockets...while his hands were either against the car, or being held by the officers."Suttles' attorney said when a bystander recording the altercation asked why they were punching Suttles in the head, the officers responded by saying they were saving his life because he was trying to eat drugs.The claim also accuses the officers of not seeking medical treatment for Suttles until the following day, despite the fact that he suffered serious injuries.The police report from the incident states that officers noticed a strong odor of marijuana coming from Suttles' vehicle after pulling him over for driving the wrong way."While conducting a pat down, searched defendant did push off vehicle and fight with officers," the police report states. "Defendant continued to fight and reach in his pants, ignoring officers command to stop resisting."The report also says officers recovered a white powder substance from Suttles' left pocket.In an attempt to handcuff Suttles, police say he was taken down to the ground. In May, a police source said that Suttles had drugs on him and tried to destroy the drugs while officers were handcuffing him.In the video, one officer says, "let it go," and "I'm trying to get the drugs.""You're making this hard on yourself," another officer says in the video.A woman off-camera also told Suttles to "stop resisting." Suttles told the woman that he wasn't resisting.The Erie County District Attorney's Office is investigating the incident.Both officers remain on duty with the Buffalo Police Department.The lawsuit comes weeks after a 75-year-old protester was shoved to the ground by Buffalo police officers while peacefully demonstrating against police brutality after curfew. Body cam footage from Goodlettsville, Tennessee police shows officers interacting with a drunk Steven Rowe two hours before he crashed his car head-on into a car full of teenagers.Footage recorded at 1:30 a.m. on Jully 28, shows several officers confront Rowe outside Silverado's, a bar in Goodlettsville. Officers comment on how intoxicated Rowe appears to be. He's slow to respond to questions and seems confused about where he parked his car and has lost his keys.Rowe thinks somebody has stolen his car, but police tell him he's too drunk to make a report."You've got to have a place to go before we arrest you for a PI (public intoxication)," one officer said.Rowe, 28, died at the scene of a crash on Highway 40 at the southeastern edge of Greenbrier before 4:00 a.m. on July 28. He drifted over into the opposite lane of traffic and struck a Honda Element head on.Inside that car were four young people, all 18 or 19 years old. Erica Tackett, Chase Hampton and Perry and Marlie Ford were all in that car. All sustained serious injuries and were taken to the hospital, Marlie Ford by helicopter.  1130

Being a healthcare worker, especially this year, has been no easy task. Yet, applications for medical school are at an all-time high.“So I decided to apply to 32. I haven't regretted it yet, there's still time to, we’ll see,” Laura Shepherd, a medical school applicant, said. Shepherd recently graduated from the University of Hawaii, and has now applied for 32 medical schools this round.“There's kind of a range. Some students will apply to one,” she said. “The application process takes almost an entire year."She’s one of many hoping to get into medical school in 2021. In fact, admissions departments are seeing the most applicants ever.“What we’re finding is at this stage, an 18 percent increase in the number of applicants,” Dr. Geoffrey Young, the senior director for student affairs and programs at the Association of American Medical Colleges, said. The association is also referred to as the AAMC.Dr. Young said usually, they see a one to three percent increase in applications each year.“You just feel, your chances, statistically that really decreases your chances ya know,” Shepherd said.“We don’t quite know what that might be because we don’t have a trend of data at this point,” Dr. Young said. But they do have some guesses as to why there’s such a big increase — one being the instability of the job market. “Medicine remains a stable profession,” he said.And the dedication of healthcare workers through the pandemic has also played a role.“How can you not be touched by a nurse or a physician or a tech sitting with someone and they are dying and trying to make a connection, a human connection between that patient and that patients loved ones,” Dr. Young explained.“I had never wanted to go to medical school more. I really really wanted to go. I was fidgeting in my seat whenever I watched news reports of how bad it was,” Shepherd said.The rise in interest is good for the healthcare industry, as a whole.The U.S. could see an estimated shortage of 54,000 to 139,000 physicians by 2033, according to the AAMC. And burnout could factor into that.“Physicians, all the providers, all the staff stepped up for that first wave and that second wave through the summer and now the third wave. It’s just draining for everyone,” Dr. Scott Strauss said. He is a Division Vice President for Graduate Medical Education for HCA Healthcare. “It’s really the residency programs that also need to increase.”Residency happens after finishing medical school. Dr. Strauss and his coworkers are working on expanding the number of residency positions available. Both these and medical school spots would need to increase to help meet the demand of physicians.“Medical school residency training in healthcare in the future will absolutely be different and have been impacted by COVID,” Dr. Strauss said.As admissions departments sort through the record amount of applicants this year, pre-med graduates like Shepherd are hoping to be part of the change in the future.“Some people who aren't shooting to be a doctor might think that’s terrifying that must really make you second guess your choice,” she said. “But I think a lot of pre-med students would agree with me when they say that makes me want to do it more.” 3227
