SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A car carrier truck slammed into a hydrant Tuesday evening in Pacific Beach, sending a geyser spewing into the air as passersby took in the spectacle.The incident happened on the 2700 block of Garnet Avenue around 6:30 p.m. Authorities say the driver hit the hydrant before immediately pulling over and remaining at the scene.San Diego Fire-Rescue arrived to stop the hydrant from shooting water onto nearby businesses.Many nearby businesses closed for the day as San Diego Police and San Diego Fire-Rescue went door-to-door to find out what, if any damage had been done.At this time, it's unclear what led to the crash. 649

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A broken fire hydrant sent thousands of gallons of water gushing into the air Friday, damaging home on the 5100 block of Mariner Drive, near Otay Mesa.  The home received flood damage on the first floor of the house, as well as the yard. The cars in the driveway were drenched as well.  Water was gushing from the broken hydrant for nearly 20 minutes, according to the homeowner, Gary Birtwell.  "It was coming in through the backdoor," Birtwell said. "We had about 6 inches of water in the back yard that basically filled up above the door. And it was coming in through a closed window on the side of the house. We had water that came in through the ventilation." A neighbor's security video captured what appears to be a white SUV pulling into the curb then hitting the hydrant. Water begins gushing, and the SUV takes off.  Police officers took the neighbor's security video from the scene and were looking for more footage of the incident. 1015

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego State University football team announced Friday it has added a game against the Brigham Young University Cougars in December to complete its shortened schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic.The team initially received its schedule from the Mountain West Conference Thursday with a "TBA" game on Dec. 12. That game will now be played against BYU in Provo, Utah.It will be the second straight season that SDSU ends its regular season with the Cougars. Last year on Nov. 30, San Diego State defeated BYU, 13- 3, in what ended up being the Aztecs' final football game at SDCCU Stadium to snap a six-game losing streak in the series and improve to 8-21-1 all-time against Brigham Young.The BYU game will be the sole non-conference game for the Aztecs, excepting any possible post-season play.San Diego State opens its season at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, against UNLV on Oct. 24. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - UCSD and Scripps Institution of Oceanography alumna Megan McArthur will head to space as the pilot for the SpaceX Crew-2 mission in early 2021, NASA announced this week.The Crew-2 flight will be the second SpaceX Crew Dragon flight to the International Space Station as part of NASA's commercial crew program.McArthur, who received her doctorate in oceanography from Scripps in 2002, traveled to space aboard the space shuttle Atlantis in 2009. She and her crew were part of a 12-day mission to repair the Hubble Space Telescope. McArthur operated the shuttle's robotic arm that grabbed and released the telescope, making her the last person to "touch" the telescope. She was born in Honolulu but considers California her home state. She holds a bachelor's degree in engineering from UCLA.The SpaceX Crew-2 flight will be her first trip to the International Space Station.Joining McArthur is NASA astronaut Shane Kimbrough as mission commander with Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency astronaut Akihiko Hoshide and European Space Agency astronaut Thomas Pesquet as mission specialists.McArthur is one of two Scripps Oceanography alumni who are astronauts.
