SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diegans looking to switch careers or get back to work after coronavirus-caused layoffs have a way to get free job training this summer.San Diego Continuing Education is offering free classes in 75 different areas, many of which are focused on high-demand jobs."During difficult economic times that we are about to enter, short term intensive career education is the way to get America back to work," said SDCE President Dr. Carlos Turner Cortez.Anyone in San Diego is eligible to take the classes. SDCE offers training certificates in healthcare, welding, information technology, cybersecurity, culinary arts, clothing, automotives, and more.For Richard Sanchez, who lost his job during the pandemic, it's a chance to start over after a layoff."I'm already 38 years old," Sanchez said. "To have this opportunity helps people out to get a new job and change your career."According to a recent report by SANDAG, around 460,000 people in San Diego have lost their jobs since March 7. The report says unemployment could be as high as 30%.Dr. Cortez said people who are looking for a job should look into continuing education first."It's incumbent on us to make sure that students who are coming through our program are developing the skills necessary to be successful in these career pathways," he said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Fire-Rescue crews removed a body from Chollas Lake Monday, fire officials said. The man, identified only as Hispanic and in his mid- to late 20s, was found about noon at the lake at 5850 College Grove Drive in the Oak Park neighborhood. Brianna Yasel and her friends were at the lake and realized something was wrong."I couldn't tell what it was; it looked like a rock to me. Once they pulled it out and flipped it over, my friend was able to see the hand at first and it did look like he was under the water for a while. He just didn't look too good," said Yasel."The body was discovered almost in the center of the lake; a passerby said it looked somewhat suspicious. He noticed it moved by an rock cropping," said San Diego Police Lt. Ernesto Servin.San Diego Police are investigating to determine the cause of death and the man’s identity, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue. The Medical Examiner was also called to the scene.Chollas Lake, which served as a reservoir from 1901 to 1966, is open during daylight hours for recreation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego city leaders met Monday to look for new ways to tackle homelessness. Several departments and organizations gave presentations to a committee, lead by Councilmember Chris Ward.The Select Committee on Homelessness met to discuss how to create new employment opportunities for homeless and how to get them into the existing rapid-rehousing programs. They also discussed a new program that would house all homeless services in one location.The San Diego Police Department provided an overview of their new Neighborhood Policing division. They say they are working to provide outreach, mental health services, and enforcement when needed.San Diego residents spoke during the public comment portion of the meeting, thanking the committee for their work but asking them to do more.Several other agencies also had presentations, providing updates on the temporary bridge shelters and the homeless storage facilities.The Select Committee on Homelessness meets one to two times a month. 1013

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Recent rains have caused sewage-contaminated runoff to enter ocean water along Imperial Beach, San Diego County health officials announced Friday.An existing water contact closure of the Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge coastline has been expanded to include all of Imperial Beach's coast, according to the San Diego County Department of Environmental Health.Due to recent rainfall, county health officials said sewage-contaminated runoff from the Tijuana River entered the Tijuana Estuary. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego drivers waiting patiently to pick up friends and family at Lindbergh Field will have a new location at the airport starting Monday. San Diego International Airport is relocating its cell phone waiting lot to an area northwest of its current location on June 24. Drivers may park for free in the cell phone lot for up to an hour while they wait for loved ones to notify them of their arrival, avoiding traffic and illegal parking at the terminals.The new 85-space lot will be located east of the Airport Authority Administration Building on Harbor Drive.
