TIANJIN, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- China has full confidence and capability to overcome various difficulties to ensure sound and fast economic growth for an even longer period of time, said Premier Wen Jiabao on Saturday. Addressing the opening ceremony of the 2008 Summer Davos Forum in the north China port metropolis of Tianjin, Wen said China is in the stage of rapid industrialization and urbanization, and has huge potential for economic growth. The important period of strategic opportunities for China's development will last quite a long time. Despite the heavy snow and sleet storms and the devastating earthquake and a complex situation both at home and abroad the nation faced, China have overcome difficulties one after another and maintained the momentum of steady economic growth. "There are many favorable conditions for China to maintain sustained and fast growth, such as abundant supply of labor and capital as well as huge potential of increased domestic consumption and investment demands, vast market and more competitive and dynamic enterprises," said Wen. The demands for investment, consumption and export are growing in a more balanced way. The economic fundamentals in China remain unchanged and the economy is moving in the direction envisaged in the macro-economic control policy, he added. The two-day forum, also known as the New Champions 2008, has attracted about 1,400 participants from nearly 90 countries and regions, including business elite and senior officials, to discuss topics about the theme "The Next Wave of Growth". The second Annual Meeting of the New Champions organized by the World Economic Forum is officially opened at Tianjin Binhai Convention and Exhibition Center in north China's Tianjin Municipality, Sept. 27, 2008
BEIJING, May 31 (Xinhua) -- The 28-year-old policewoman Jiang Min has become a national model for her devotion to quake victims while her own mother and two-year-old daughter died in the devastating May 12 earthquake. Jiang was received by Zhou Yongkang, secretary of the Central Committee for Political and Legislative Affairs of the Communist Party of China (CPC), at Zhongnanhai, the leadership compound in downtown Beijing, on Saturday afternoon. Jiang Min has become a national model for her devotion to quake victims while her own mother and two-year-old daughter died in the devastating May 12 earthquake. (Xinhua Photo) Many police officers risked their own lives to save others and help suffering victims after the major quake, said Zhou, also a member of the Standing Committee of CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, "You are one of them. You have been on the frontline to assist quake victims when bearing great pains of losing the beloved. All of us should learn from you." A day after the quake, Jiang learnt that ten members of her family living in Beichuan county, one of the worst-hit areas, passed away including her only daughter. She was working as a police officer in the neighboring city Pengzhou. "I felt that the sky was falling. I can't believe that. I had just talked with my baby girl on phone a day ago," she once recalled the dark moment in an interview. But Jiang did not leave her post as more and more displaced people came to Pengzhou from quake-hit areas and the police had to help them settle down. In the week following the earthquake, she had worked at temporary shelter camps and barely slept until she fainted on the spot and was sent to hospital. Jiang has showed the best of Chinese police officers, Zhou said. He hoped that local police officers and those from other parts of China to assist quake relief would stick to such a noble spirit to work together and well serve their duty in a bid to help create a stable society in the quake-affected areas. Jiang said she would not fail the Party and people's expectation and work harder in her own post.

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan announced Tuesday that positive results had been achieved at a one-day China-U.S. trade meeting here, saying China stands ready to work with the U.S. to further expand bilateral economic and trade ties. "China-U.S. economic relation is not only important for our two countries, but important for the whole world," Wang said at the end of the 19th session of the China-U.S. Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade (JCCT), which was held at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library in a Los Angeles suburb. As the world's biggest developing and developed countries respectively, China and the United States enjoy ever closer economic ties and ever solider foundation of bilateral cooperation, said the vice premier.Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan (R) meets with US Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez during the 19th session of the China-U.S. Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade (JCCT), at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library in a Los Angeles suburb, on Sep. 16, 2008. Senior officials of China and the United States gathered here on Tuesday to discuss various business and trade issues in order to seek ways to facilitate bilateral economic relations between the two countries. The Chinese government has always been attaching great importance to consolidating and developing China-U.S. economic relations, and we have done a great deal of work in terms of promoting trade balance and strengthening intellectual property protection," said Wang. The Chinese vice premier co-chaired the one-day meeting with U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez and U.S. Trade Representative Susan Schwab. Chinese Commerce Minister Chen Deming and U.S. Agriculture Secretary Edward Schafer also attended the meeting. Wang said the meeting has secured mutually beneficial win-win results, and would go a long way to promote bilateral cooperation and create a good atmosphere for the next China-U.S. Strategic Economic Dialogue (SED), which will be held later this year. Like SED, the JCTT is a major cooperation mechanism between the two countries to resolve problems and disputes regarding investment and trade issues through dialogue and discussion, according to Wang. Echoing Wang's remarks, Gutierrez described Tuesday's meeting as "a very robust session with very robust outcomes." He said the U.S.-China economic relationship has been the fastest growing one that his country has ever seen. "The U.S. is today China's No.1 export market, and China the U.S.' No. 3 export market. The relation is growing so fast, so quickly, probably unique in history. And we manage this," said Gutierrez. He mentioned that the two-way trade volume between the two countries had grown to 380 billion dollars last year from only 4 billion dollars when the JCCT mechanism was initially established in 1983. During Tuesday's talks, the two sides reached consensus on a wide range of issues, including intellectual property protection, medical equipment acquisition and information security, officials said. Ahead of this, five bilateral agreements were signed by senior officials from the two sides in areas like agricultural cooperation, food safety, trade statistics and rural information and communications technology development. The Chinese side also announced to lift bird flu-related ban on poultry products from seven U.S. states including New York, and conditionally resume imports of American beef, while the U.S. side expressed its stance against trade protectionism and promised to push for the lifting of trade barriers against some Chinese products like see food, fruit and woodcraft. Tuesday's meeting marked the 25th anniversary of the China-U.S. JCCT commission, a high-level government-to-government dialogue seeking to open market opportunities and resolve trade disputes between the two countries. Wang was leading a big delegation of senior officials from the Ministry of Commerce, the Foreign Ministry, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Agriculture and other ministries for the event.

BEIJING, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Friday urged all the members of the Communist Party of China(CPC) to put people's interests first and learn the bitter lessons from the latest security incidents. Addressing the opening ceremony of a seminar for the country's ministerial-level leaders in Beijing, Hu, also the General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, said that the major accidents on work and food safety which occurred in some places of the country this year had incurred severe losses of people's lives and property. These accidents had indicated that some leaders lacked a sense of responsibility and had a loose governance, he said. These accidents also showed some of the leaders paid no attention to people's problems and complaints and were insensitiveto the problems which threats people's life security, said Hu. He urged all the leaders to fully understand the serious consequences of the accidents and learn the bitter lessons from the accidents. Those accidents reminded us once again that only by solving the problems emerged from the Party leaders ... and putting people's interests first, could the Party better lead the people towards the building of a well-off society, Hu said. The President also urged more efforts from the leaders to realize and safeguard the fundamental interests of the people. Leaders should strive hard to do practical and good things for the people and ensure that people benefits from the country's developing economy, he noted. More efforts should be made to mobilize people to be involved in the cause of the country's scientific development, and leaders should collect people's ideas and listen to their opinions in the process, he said.
