Food flew off the shelves in March when the national emergency for COVID-19 was announced. Now, grocers and food manufacturers are working to make sure that doesn’t happen again this winter.“We are a specialty market focusing on the meats and protein,” said Mike Silvestri, general manager at one of three Tony’s Meats & Market locations.Like many grocery stores, both big and small, Tony’s Meats & Market saw the disruption in the supply chain back in March.“What really screwed up a lot of things in this pandemic was people were buying way more than they normally do, not necessarily here, but in the grocery sector in general,” Silvestri said. It's something he is trying to avoid moving forward.“We don’t need to panic buy. I think you buy what you need for the week like you're normally shopping,” he said. “So, just remain calm.”As U.S. coronavirus cases continue to rise--paired with flu season, holidays, and other factors--experts are once again concerned about what the impact on the supply chain might be. So, grocers and food manufacturers are preparing for whatever may come with the winter season, many resorting to stockpiling themselves to avoid running out.“On one side, they're building up inventory to make sure they're ready for it. But on the other side inventory is additional costs,” Jack Buffington, a supply chain expert and professor at the University of Denver, said. “Their concern is the weeks of inventory they had before the pandemic hit was not sufficient for them to run out of supplies. So, particularly for big events like Thanksgiving, to make sure they have ample supply because that's a big moneymaker for them.”For large chain grocery stores, stockpiling in large warehouses is a viable option. For smaller grocers like Tony’s, they only have so much space.“We do have a warehouse. It’s not as monstrous as most people would imagine,” Silvestri said.The company has already prepared by buying pallets of food items to keep at their warehouse to get through the season. “What we would call necessities like pastas, ground beef, pasta sauces, canned items, things like that,” he said.A buyer for Tony’s told us even with the gap of up to three months in June to start getting stuff back in stock, they’ve been stockpiling staple items since March for this winter.“Christmas has begun October 1,” Buffington said. “The entire supply chain is moving things forward. For one reason due to the risk of supply and demand.”“We all had to be on the ball a little bit early this year. Obviously, we start pretty early as it is but because of all the COVID-19 stuff we’ve had to really be mindful of how much we’re looking to shoot over,” Silvestri said. Silvestri said he sees everyone getting concerned about not having enough supply or demand, due to uncertainty.“COVID-19 was a complete catalyst of what you're seeing as a redefinition of the supply chain and the economy,” Buffington said. “I think everybody’s getting scared of not having enough supply and not having enough demand.”As Silvestri and the rest of the crew at Tony's prepare for an uncertain Thanksgiving and Christmas, he says they feel ready.“The pace since COVID-19 started has really been a holiday pace anyway,” he said. 3240

TUESDAY'S PRIMARYWhile Tuesday's primary does not involve presidential politics in Florida, a number of races impacting the state legislature, Congress and local governments are taking place. HISTORY OF ISSUESFlorida's issues with elections goes all the way back to 1876. The presidential election was still undecided with Florida being unsure how to award its 4 Electoral College votes. Florida wasn't alone. South Carolina and Louisiana were also unsure. As a result, Congress had to step in and resolve the issue with Rutherford B. Hayes eventually becoming President. Most Americans know Florida because of the issues in 2000. With another presidential election hanging in the balance, Al Gore and George W. Bush battled for votes during a 36-day recount. Palm Beach County's butterfly ballot, with confusing placement of names for some voters, likely resulted in 2,800 votes for Pat Buchanan instead of Gore. "Hanging Chads" in the state became a household phrase nationwide to describe ballots with paper fragments still hanging from them. Ballots that year were hole punch style for many voters. Like in 2000 and 2016, Florida has long been an important state for nominees to win. It has helped choose the winning presidential candidate every election since 1992.RECENT ISSUESIssues in Florida's Elections have continued in recent years. In Broward County, nearly 1,000 uncounted ballots were found in a warehouse in 2012. In 2018, 22 ballots were counted that were supposed to be rejected. For more than a decade, Dawn Comstock has studied sports injuries among high school athletes, collecting data from hundreds of high schools across the country.She says after going over all the numbers, something began to stand out about men and women’s lacrosse.“We really just set out to ask the question, "how much of the concussions of girls lacrosse could be directly attributed to the fact that they are prohibited from wearing the hard shell helmet with the full facemask that’s required in boys lacrosse?" said Comstock.Ann Kitt Carpenetti from US Lacrosse says the differences create almost a different game with different issues.“The game rules are different, the culture is different, we do recognize that injuries do occur in both games," said Carpenetti.There’s no body checking, basically a running shove, in women’s lacrosse like there is in the men’s game. Because of that rule, women's lacrosse players don't wear helmets.But Comstock and fellow professor Sarah Fields found that rule isn't keeping female players from getting hurt.“What we found was 72.7% of all of the concussions among girls high school lacrosse players resulted from being struck by a stick or a ball," said Comstock.Almost three quarters of concussions among women's players have nothing to do with player-to-player contact.The researchers estimated that by requiring them to wear helmets, they could reduce the total concussions in the sport by 45%“61.5% of the concussions that resulted from being hit by the stick or the ball in girls lacrosse players could have been prevented if they had been wearing the same helmet the hard shell helmet with the full facemask that boys lacrosse players are required to wear,” said Comstock.US Lacrosse says it has a helmet designed for women’s lacrosse and is testing it in Florida“In terms of the rate of head injuries caused by stick and ball, some concussive, some other, we agree it was notable. And that’s why we led the development of the ASTM head gear back in 2008,” said Carpenetti.The helmet is softer and has less coverage than the male helmet, and right now it’s optional in all states except Florida. Depending on the results of an ongoing study of it’s effectiveness it could be rolled out across the country.But for Fields and Comstock, that rollout is inching along at a painful rate."Sport culture, loves to move at a glacial pace, I mean we're still arguing about designated hitters in baseball.
