Do long lines get you down? Walmart has a plan to help eliminate the stress shoppers get when waiting in long lines. The company’s new system is called “Check Out with Me.” First, a Walmart associate scans your items with their special, mobile device. Then, they’ll swipe your credit card right there, before handing you the receipt. The process eliminates having to wait in line for a cashier. Marketing professor Darrin Duber-Smith at MSU Denver says consumers want options, and the main option they want is convenience. He says two companies in constant competition are Walmart and Amazon.Amazon recently announced their plans to open 3,000 brick and mortar stores-- that will be cashierless—by 2021.As for Walmart’s new checkout program, the company plans to position workers in the busiest sections of the store. Echoing sentiments shared before Thanksgiving, the CDC is pleading with Americans to stay home this holiday season to slow the spread of the coronavirus."The best thing for Americans to do in the upcoming holiday season is to stay at home and not travel,'' said Dr. Henry Walke, CDC's COVID-19 incident manager, during a news briefing Wednesday."Cases are rising. Hospitalizations are increasing, Deaths are increasing. We need to try to bend the curve, stop this exponential increase,'' Walke continued. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had similar advice ahead of Thanksgiving, and still the TSA reported some of the highest rates of passengers since the pandemic started in the few days ahead of the holiday. On the Sunday before Thanksgiving, the TSA screened 1.17 million travelers, a record high since the pandemic started. For those who decide to travel, the CDC now recommends people get tested for COVID-19 both before and after their trips. Their guidance is to test one to three days before travel and again three to five days after travel. They also strongly recommend reducing nonessential activities and quarantining for several days around travel.Health experts, including the White House coronavirus task force is urging those who don’t get tested to act like they could be infectious and quarantine after travel to reduce the potential spread.Walke said the CDC expects to see an increase in the already high level of coronavirus cases in the next few days from Thanksgiving travel. There have been more than 13.7 million positive cases of coronavirus in this country since the pandemic started, more than 180,000 new cases were recorded December 2. More than 271,000 Americans have died from COVID-19. 1738

EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - Meridian Baptist Church in El Cajon is working to put up a handful of so-called emergency sleeping cabins on their property.“They are different from tiny homes,” Pastor Rolland Slade said, pointing out that they don’t have running water or a kitchen. “They are essentially a shelter for someone living in homelessness to actually sleep behind a locked close door and be comfortable.”Slade says they have bathrooms on the property as well as a kitchen. They are looking to install a shower or perhaps bring them in through outside organizations. The emergency cabins are 144 sq feet, of which 96 square feet is livable space.“The village we are looking to build is going to focus on veteran women with children who are living in homelessness in El Cajon,” Slade says.Slade says they will find their clients through organizations that work with the homeless. The homes are not meant to be permanent housing, and families will be allowed to stay for 90 days. The church is working with a group called Amikas, as well as the city.El Cajon city officials have given the pilot program the green light through December 31, 2023. However, city officials say “permits are required, and the “emergency housing” must be operated by an organization experienced/proficient.”There is one cabin on the property. It is not occupied and is used as a demo. Slade hopes to get a total of six up in the next four to six months. They are working on fundraising efforts to build the cabins. 1500
