BEIJING, April 28 (Xinhua) -- Industrial enterprises in China's 24 regions reported combined profits of 690.8 billion yuan (101.2 billion U.S. dollars) in the first quarter, more than double the figure of the same period last year, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said in a statement Wednesday.The NBS did not provide reasons for the 102.6-percent profit surge. The figure was down 21.1 percentage points for the first two months of the year, the statement said.Analysts attributed the growth to a low comparison base during the first quarter of 2009 when the country's economic growth was dragged down by the global economic downturn. JINAN, May 2 (Xinhua) -- A Hong Kong cargo ship sank off Weihai City, east China's Shandong Province, Sunday after a collision with a Liberian-registered freighter, rescuers said.All 46 crew members of the two vessels were safe after the accident at 5:23 a.m., the city's maritime safety bureau said in a statement.The accident could have occurred in foggy conditions at the time, said Li Zhiqiang, an official with the city's maritime safety bureauThe 23 Chinese crew of the Hong Kong-registered Bright Century and the 23 Indian crew of the Liberia-registered Sea Success had been rescued as of noon, he said.Water had flooded into the damaged prow of the Sea Success, but the vessel was still afloat.The bureau had dispatched a ship to shadow the vessel as it was still in negotiations with the owner about the cost of towing the ship to port.The bureau is investigating the cause of the accident.

BEIJING, May 22 -- China's stock index futures wrapped up their first month of trading on Friday as the May contract was delivered smoothly without triggering sharp declines or volatility in the spot market.The May contract rose 0.51 percent to close at 2749.8 points while the June contract, the most actively traded, rose 1.44 percent to close at 2801 points. The CSI 300 Index, which tracks 300 large caps traded on the Shanghai and Shenzhen bourses gained 1.57 percent to 2768.79 points.The smooth settlement of the May contract eased investors' worries about the "expiration day effect", with fears that it would trigger sharper volatility on the spot market due to more active trading of index futures as investors rushed to close positions for May and changed to June contracts on that day."The trading volume and the holdings of the May contract dramatically decreased in the past month, which significantly reduced the incentive of price manipulation in the spot market," said Yang Cui, an analyst at Changjiang Securities.Chen Zhenzhi, an analyst at Guangfa Futures, said the impact of the expiry day was very limited due to the fact that most institutional investors have not participated in index futures trading.The China's index futures market is still dominated by retail investors although securities firms and equity funds have been allowed to trade the new financial instrument.
