They come and go with less frequency now: empty trains across the country as this nation's public transit system finds itself in peril, with millions of Americans changing their commute routines because of COVID-19."Transit is definitely in trouble," said Jarred Johnson, who oversees the group Transit Matters.It's not the empty trains and buses that bother Johnson so much as the proposed cuts on the horizon, as ridership nationwide has plummeted.An estimated 36 million people across the country depended on public transit before the pandemic, but they just aren't riding right now, so revenues are down dramatically.In Washington D.C., the Metro is losing nearly 0 million a month; New York City's MTA is facing billion in potential cuts and San Francisco’s light rail is more than million in the hole. Public transit lines in nearly every major city across the country are facing financial uncertainty."It’s really time for our political leaders to step up and provide the funding transit needs," Johnson added.Another big concern is that if public transit services are cut now, they won't be there for riders when the pandemic is over. There has been no phone call between President-elect Joe Biden and President Donald Trump. There has been no concession from the commander-in-chief either. America is currently enduring one of the most turbulent transitions in recent memory. So what is not happening that should be during this non-traditional transition? NO SIGN-OFF ON TRANSITIONWhile Biden has held events with signs like "The Office of the President-elect" behind him, technically the office has not been activated by the General Services Administration. It may sound like an obscure government agency, but the office is responsible for unlocking funds and access for the president-elect. Without the GSA starting the transition, Biden can't telephone current members of the executive branch and receive confidential briefings from them. He doesn't have access to taxpayer funds to begin the background check process for some appointees. SIGNIFICANT IMPLICATIONS The implications go beyond the lack of a photograph between Biden and Trump in the White House. The last time the United States experienced a delayed transition was in 2000 because of the Florida Recount. The 9/11 Commission, following the September 11th attacks, put some blame on the transition because it prevented President George W. Bush from putting some national security advisers in key positions in a timely manner. Congressional Democrats have sent a letter asking GSA administrator Emily Murphy to brief Congress on why the transition has not begun. 1503

This election season, Demetrius Short is hustling to get his people to the polls.“We have the wonderful opportunity as African American men to be here today,” Short said to a group of young African American voters outside a polling site in Nashville, Tennessee. “The next John Lewis might be right here.”Short is the founder and CEO of the Transformation Life Center and Steps of Success 5K, nonprofits mentoring youth living in underserved communities. Now, Short and his team are using physical fitness to inspire political change by leading young Black men on runs and talking about becoming better people afterwards.“Going out, taking your niece and nephew that may not have a father, being that father or mother example to them and just be the change you want to see,” Short said.During this presidential election, Short is reaching out to college students from Fisk University, a private historically Black college in Nashville.“We’re here to come out here and inspire change in our community and inspire young people to really vote,” said Myles Harris, a recent Fisk University graduate.Harris says he is motivated to get more members of African American communities to have their voices heard and their votes counted.“A lot of people don’t vote because they don’t see the point, they don’t understand why it’s so important,” he said.Many members in the local African American community do understand the importance of this election and are calling this political movement inspiring.“Us Black folks are still fighting. It’s time for a change, man,” said Norman T.
