NORFOLK, Va. - The first presidential debate of 2020 was all some voters needed to watch before heading to the polls.“[I] tuned into most of the debate last night, and that really solidified my decision to vote today,” said William Jimenez.But the thought of this year’s election is nerve-wracking for some voters.“Regardless of political persuasion and who you intend to vote for, people across the political spectrum are all experiencing that kind of stress,” said Gary Roftus, the director of Fairfield Psychological Associates.Jimenez says this election is important.“A lot is on the line. A lot is at stake,” he adds.Election stress - according to the American Psychological Association, it’s affecting more than 50% of Americans.Gabrielle Harrell felt the pressure at the polls Wednesday.“It’s been very stressful. As I was filling out the ballot, I was triple-checking to make sure I’m checking the right box,” Harrell said.Roftus says people are already stressed with the coronavirus.“We’ve never had an election where we are told is the most important election ever in the middle of a pandemic,” he adds.As we get closer to November 3, Roftus says politics comes up in his counseling sessions.“Inadvertently or directly because it's bothering them, people are bringing up the election all the time,” he adds.Roftus says the additional voting options are affecting stress levels.“Sometimes some people are uncertain as to where they should vote, whether they should vote by mail, is their ballot going to be accepted?"For people who want to get rid of some of that election stress, voting early is an option.Roftus says it gives some people some comfort and relief. NEW YORK (AP) — The satellite radio company SiriusXM has locked up its most valuable asset, Howard Stern, for five more years in a deal announced Tuesday. Terms were not disclosed. Stern was already making a reported million a year. He's invaluable to the company, which had 600,000 subscribers when Stern announced in 2004 that he was joining and now has nearly 35 million. "I had been in a toxic relationship with terrestrial radio. And no matter how well I treated the medium, no matter how successful I made them, they abused me," Stern said in a press release. "Going to SiriusXM liberated me. I felt like Tina Turner freeing myself from Ike," said Stern. "And despite the naysayers and the ridicule, we have persevered, and are thriving. I've been proven right about satellite radio over and over again. With this contract renewal, I can't wait to see what else I'll be right about.The deal also gives SiriusXM exclusive rights to Stern's audio and video library through 2032. New details in the case of 13-year-old Patricia Alatorre who was allegedly raped and murdered last week by a man from Los Angeles who she communicated with on social media. The details in those court documents are very graphic, much of which wouldn't be appropriate to release.It was in the neighborhood near Wible Rd and Hosking Ave where police say 13-year-old Patricia Alatorre was kidnapped near her home last week. Documents revealed a lot of information about how she communicated with her suspected 24-year-old killer, the kind of communication they had prior to her death, and the tragic way she lost her life."That's sad. That's unacceptable. We don't want anybody killed, but it's incredibly sad when people kill children," said Kern County District Attorney Cynthia Zimmer.Zimmer shared her thoughts after court documents were released Wednesday morning detailing the tragic events leading up to Alatorre's death. Officials said she was killed in South Bakersfield shortly after midnight on July 2nd after 24-year-old Armando Cruz from Inglewood communicated with her on social media over the course of a week. They would send explicit photos to each other, according to documents.Things would take a turn for the worst, according to Bakersfield Police Sgt. Robert Pair."As you can imagine this is a particularly sensitive case. It's involving details that is especially graphic."Documents state Cruz convinced Alatorre to meet with him to engage in explicit acts on two occasions despite knowing she was only 13. He drove from Los Angeles to Bakersfield to meet her. On the second encounter, Cruz drove her around the block as she screamed, telling him she didn't want to go with him.It was about this time documents state she was raped. She tried to get up and physically struggled with Cruz and that's when he allegedly strangled her and tied her up with duct tape. He then took her body with him but the details following are too graphic to release.On Sunday night Cruz was arrested by BPD in Los Angeles County and brought back to Bakersfield. On Tuesday he was charged with 12 felony counts."The first count is first-degree murder and in connection with first-degree murder, I charged four special circumstances which carry the penalty of life without the possibility of parole, in prison, or the death penalty," explained Zimmer.Cruz has pleaded not guilty to that first-degree murder charge and all other felony charges, including kidnapping, and aggravated sexual assault. NEW YORK, N.Y. - Walking around the city is a learning experience.Two life-long friends have written a book about their travels and discoveries on the streets of Manhattan.Lori Zimmer started writing and walking about a decade ago after losing her job.“I never had the time. Now I was taking note,” Zimmer said.“Art Hiding in New York” was born when she visited Maria Krasinski, who illustrated the book. NEW YORK, N.Y. - In August of 1956, Ellerbe, North Carolina resident Henry Frye was on his way to get married in a town about an hour away. He thought he’d kill two birds with one stone and register to vote at the Ellerbe Town Clerk's office before the wedding. In Ellerbe, you could only do it on Saturdays.Frye was a former air force captain, and college graduate just about to enter the University Of North Carolina Law school. But the clerk, who knew Frye's family and all about his accomplishments, asked Frye a series of test questions on history and the constitution.“Well, I said, 'why are you asking me all these questions? I’m just here to register to vote,'" Frye told PIX 11. “And he said, 'they’re all in the book and if you don’t answer, I’m not going to register you to vote.'”Frye said the clerk pulled out a blue, nondescript book and showed it to him. Frye was being subjected to what’s called a literacy test. He did get married that day, but after he refused to answer the clerk’s questions, he did not register to vote that day.In 1969, elected as the state’s first black lawmaker since reconstruction, Frye had one thing in his sights.“The first bill I introduced was a resolution to abolish the literacy test as a requirement for voting in North Carolina," he said.Two years after Frye was elected to the state General Assembly, he was joined by the Reverend Joy Johnson and two years after that by attorney Mickey Michaux. The three men formed the state’s first Black Caucus and, together, they worked to strengthen the state’s voting protections.It all began to unravel in 2010, Michaux said.‘When the Republicans took over in 2010 and 2011 after we had passed everything we needed, they began to erode all we had done,” said Michaux.The 1965 Landmark Voting Rights act should have been the last word on the subject, but 2013 changed all that.In the 2013 U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Shelby County vs. Holder, the “pre-clearance authority" was gutted. The ruling basically nullified part of the law that mandated that any state that wanted to make changes to its voting laws had to get the move cleared by the Justice Department to guard against discriminatory laws. As warned by critics, the ruling had the subtle effect of a sledgehammer on a swollen damn.“The discriminatory voter ID law went into effect in Texas as soon as the decision came down,” said Sean Morales Doyle of the Brennan Center for Justice. “North Carolina acted to pass laws that the Supreme Court itself said targeted Blacks with a surgical decision.”Michaux argued against one of North Carolina’s Republican-backed voting bills on the floor of the North Carolina General Assembly.“I think I said on the floor that they should send that bill to hell where it would never rise again," he said.A 2018 Brennan Center report concluded that previously covered states, nine as a whole, and some counties and townships in five others, had purged voters off their rolls at significantly higher rates than non-covered jurisdictions. They had also enacted laws and other measures to restrict voting.As of 2019, 29 states had put new voting restrictions in place, from cutting down the number of days to vote to eliminating early voting as well as closing polling places.“One of the tactics we’ve seen in the aftermath of Shelby versus Holder is that many states have closed down polling sites which just happen to be in low-income, African American communities, and communities of color,” Congressman Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) said.The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights has found that since 2013, nearly 1,700 polling places have been closed in 13 states, including nearly 1,200 in southern States. In Georgia, seven counties now have just one polling site each to serve hundreds of square miles.Democrats are also concerned about voting during the pandemic. President Donald Trump and Attorney General William Barr assailed mail-in voting as wrought with fraud, despite evidence to the contrary. There are also concerns about Trump mega-donor and new Postmaster General Louis DeJoy. There are concerns that DeJoy is degrading the postal services capabilities to handle mail-in ballots in the run-up to the election.Henry Frye, meanwhile, has retired from public service as Chief Justice and the first African American to serve on North Carolina’s Supreme court. And Mickey Michaux retired as the longest-serving member of the state’s General Assembly in North Carolina’s history. Michaux has little love for those seeking to tear down all that he and his colleagues in the North Carolina Black Caucus worked for.“Like one Republican said to me 'Y’all just want everybody to vote don’t you,'" he recalled.
