The Mormon church is parting ways with the Boy Scouts of America after more than a century.In a joint statement Tuesday night, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Boy Scouts of America announced their decision to end their relationship next year after 105 years.The Boy Scouts serves about 330,000 Mormon youths, and the Mormon church is one of its largest sponsors."We have jointly determined that, effective on December 31, 2019, the church will conclude its relationship as a chartered organization with all Scouting programs around the world," the statement said.The Mormon church said it made the decision because it's expanded outside the United States, and wants to explore new youth programs that serve its international members.It will continue to work fully with the organization and support its goals and values until the end of next year. 878

The race for a COVID-19 vaccine appears to be on the horizon. But without large numbers of Americans getting the vaccine, the notion of herd immunity could be a challenge. Some are pondering whether people should be required to get a vaccine.Coronavirus cases are spiking across most of the country. Hospital ICU beds are becoming scarce, and a number of states are warning of potential lockdowns.“If they don’t start to bend this curve, then it is clear that we’re going to have to take more difficult measures and go to a stay-at-home order,” said Illinois Governor JB Pritzker.But there was some good news this week. Pfizer concluded phase three of its vaccine study. The two-shot course they say is 95 percent effective against COVID-19. Earlier in the week, Moderna said its vaccine is 94.5 percent effective.“Based upon the preliminary data that is out there, these vaccines appear to be quite safe and very, very effective at preventing COVID,” said Dr. Tina Tan, a professor of infectious disease at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine and a pediatrician at the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago.If green-lit by the FDA, one question that may arise is whether Americans should be mandated to get vaccinated. In August, Dr. Anthony Fauci weighed in.“You don’t want to mandate and try and force anyone to take the vaccine. We’ve never done that,” said Fauci.According to a Pew Research survey in September, about half of U.S. adults (49 percent) said they definitely or probably would not get vaccinated. The National Hurricane Center said it is currently monitoring three storms that could potentially develop into tropical cyclones in the coming days, adding more anxiety to what has already been an extremely active hurricane season.One of the systems, located just off the North Carolina coast, became the 15th tropical depression of the Atlantic hurricane season Monday afternoon. The depression is expected to form into a tropical storm in the coming days, and pass to the north of Bermuda. The potential tropical storm is not expected to affect the United States mainland. The National Weather Service defines a tropical depression as a low-pressure system that is being fueled by warm, tropical water and is rotating around a "well-defined" center. Once these storms have sustained winds of at least 39 mph, they become a "named" tropical storm."Nana" is the name that will be given to the next tropical storm, followed by "Omar" and "Paulette." There have been 13 named storms so far this hurricane season. At this time last year, there had only been five named storms.A second system is brewing in the Caribbean sea. The system has a 70% chance of development in the next 48 hours, and could impact Jamaica,Honduras, Belize, Guatemala and the Yucatan later in the week.A third system emerging off the coast of Africa is not expected to develop in the next 48 hours, but has a 30% chance of becoming a tropical depression or storm later in the week.The developments come just days after Hurricane Laura made landfall in Louisiana, a storm that killed 14 people and caused extensive damage near Lake Charles and other towns in the western part of the state 1667

The National Weather Service confirmed that two EF-0 tornadoes touched down in Fort Lauderdale Tuesday afternoon.According to the National Weather Service in Miami, one tornado touched down in downtown Fort Lauderdale near Andrews Avenue and NE 5th Street at about 3:34 p.m. The tornado, packing winds of 65 mph, knocked over construction fencing and barriers. A minor tree damage was reported near NE 1st Avenue and NE 4th Street.  The NWS says the tornado touched down south of the Tarpon River in the Rio Vista neighborhood, causing tree damages and minor debris, including trash cans.  637
