SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The family of a man who died after sky-diving in Otay Ranch created a Gofundme page for his two sons left behind.Jonas Wingen said his brother, Joe, died Sunday after suffering a medical emergency while sky diving."Deployed his chute, everything was fine... While he was descending something happened, he had a heart attack I'm not sure," said Wingen.Joe's two sons, Jo Jo and Riley, now moving to Lake Elsinore to live with their mom, while grieving the loss of their father."Jo Jo, it's hitting him hard, he's 14... Riley's handling it well," Wingen said. He said the family created a Gofundme to help ease some of the hardship and support the boys' future."Jo Jo is going to get braces... We're going to put some of it in a college fund for when they hit 18," he said.Riley created a memorial video showing how much they idolized their dad, remembering jam sessions and adventures. Wingen said Joe liked to ride dirtbikes, go surfing and play instruments."You know he worked hard and he played hard. That was Joe, and he loved his two boys," he said. "The last thing he said to me was, 'I'm going sky diving tomorrow wish me luck, woo!'"Wingen said Joe's last text he sent captured his essence: "fears lead to an average life."Wingen said their family is planning a celebration of life for August 5, which would have been Joe's birthday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The man who received 2,000 of his dead father’s Social Security benefits was sentenced Monday to federal prison time.Abel Perez, 55, pleaded guilty to accepting the benefits after his father died in 1997.Prosecutors said Perez would forge his father’s signature on a check payable to himself and divert the funds for his personal use.Perez admitted he knew he was not entitled to the funds which were put into the account.“The Social Security Administration’s Office of the Inspector General is pleased to see that this crime, which affects every individual relying on the Social Security Trust Fund for their retirement, was taken seriously and punished appropriately in this case,” said Robb Stickley, the Special Agent in Charge of the San Francisco Field Division, which is responsible for Southern California.  “We hope that this sentence sends a message that it is the responsibility of every individual in our society to protect their own retirement savings, and ensure that a loved one’s death does not go unreported.”A judge sentenced Perez to one year and one day in federal prison. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The man suspected of killing his stepmother and burying her body in a Tijuana backyard has been arrested on probation violations.Aaron Seth Juarez, 20, was taken into custody in San Diego Thursday. He was also wanted by the Deputy Attorney General of Justice in Tijuana on suspicion of killing Fernanda González Serrano in February.San Diego Police are currently working to return Juarez back to Mexico.González was last heard from on Feb. 2. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Laurel Street Bridge at Balboa Park was closed late Friday after a fire started inside the bridge. At around 7:30 p.m., Park Rangers called the San Diego Fire Department after seeing smoke coming out of the side of the 105-year-old bridge. The closure caused great inconvenience for Old Globe Theater patrons trying to get to and out of Friday night's show. Season ticket holders Kenny Ard and Brian Moore barely made it to the theater, before the bridge was closed off by emergency responders. Witnesses saw firefighters carefully try to suppress the flames by opening the manholes on the road.“We kind of rushed when we saw the fire truck," Moore said. “I was like, I bet they’re going to close the bridge. So we hurried and made sure we got here.“San Diego Fire Fighters said the fire broke out inside of the hollow bridge. They have not announced the cause of the flames. However, this scene was all too familiar. Since its construction in 1914, the Laurel Street Bridge has caught fire several times. Many of the fires were started by transients who end up living inside the bridge. In 2017, several homeless people were rescued from inside a utility hole on the bridge.“There are access panels at the base and some on the sides, and so people get in there,” Moore said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The all-clear was given after a suspicious device forced the evacuation of a building at San Diego City College Monday. The device was reported Monday afternoon in or near Building A, according to the school. The building serves as administrative offices. The college says no classes were affected by the evacuation. The building, as well as a cafeteria will remain closed for the remainder of the day. 431
