AURORA, Colo. — Thousands of people gathered for hours over the weekend, demanding justice in the Elijah McClain case after Colorado's governor appointed a special prosecutor to review the case earlier this week. The demonstrations were largely peaceful, but police used pepper spray on the crowd Friday evening after declaring protesters were unlawfully assembled and after what the police chief called a small group of people throwing sticks and rocks at officers.Around 1 p.m., thousands began gathering at the Aurora Municipal Center for a planned protest organized by the Party for Socialism and Liberation.About an hour later, the group marched onto Interstate 225. However, police shut the interstate down before protesters arrived. The interstate was closed in both directions from Mississippi Avenue to 6th Avenue as protesters continued to block traffic on the highway before marching onto 6th Avenue. 919

BALTIMORE — BALTIMORE, M.D. - It’s Cyber Security Awareness month and the FBI wants to warn people about potential scams, especially while so many are working and going to school virtually. One Montgomery County man, who wants to stay anonymous, was scammed out of thousands of dollars using a dating app and doesn’t want others to make the same mistakes."Emotionally, it’s like there are claws in you that you can't seem to get out," said D. For years, the man who we are calling 'D' thought he was in a caring online relationship, but just last month, he found out it was all a scam."I was a little lonely. I was needing some attention or I guess I just wanted some," said D.It started 5 years ago. Divorced, he had turned to date apps Skout and Meet Me to fill that emotional void and met Brandy Bowens from Canada. It seemed like an innocent relationship for a while, but then she started asking him to be the middle man for her "art business"."By me already being invested in our conversations and our online relationships, I kind of felt it was okay for me to do these things that they wanted," said D.So he started getting money transferred to his bank account that he would then send out in cashiers checks."I had received three wire transfers of over 0,000 and these monies they claimed were for their business," said D. It kept adding up... and then she asked for his money. It all came to a head last month when he got a call from the FBI saying it was all a scam; his ,000 was gone."It's hard. I lost the money and it messed up everything in a financial way for me. I'm trying to build my credit back, just so much that that has screwed up for me," said D.FBI Special Agent Jeffrey Reising said these scams are even more common now during the pandemic because criminals are taking advantage of government programs like unemployment and funneling the money through romance scam victims, like D."Just red flags, like 'Why am I getting unemployment in other people's names in my account? Why am I getting tens of thousands of dollars in my account'?" said Reising.Other red flags to look for are if they can never meet in person, or even answer phone calls, if they don’t have a real voicemail or if they ask for your bank account."Why can I not talk to this person face to face using some of the technology available? Why can’t I interact? Why is all of our communication on a text?" said Reising. It’s red flags D saw, but the scammer could explain away."Saying 'my phone is broke' or 'my camera doesn’t work'," said D.Now he’s sharing his story, hoping that especially during this virtual time, he can stop others from falling victim."Be cautious. If you get that flag, if you don’t get the answer for that flag, then you need to leave it alone," said D. If you think you might be a victim of a romance scam, contact your local FBI office or file a report online. This story was first published by Abby Isaacs at WMAR in Baltimore, Maryland. 2964

As the pandemic continues, homeless shelters are having to change their approach to meet the needs of families. At least one network of shelters is doing that by trying to prevent homelessness.Family Promise is the largest homeless shelter in the country. Last year, it helped 93,000 people. It provides aid to those who need housing by placing them with community partners within the interfaith community. The executive director in Arizona says the problem right now is these communities are shutting down in the pandemic.“The congregations in the last six months, five and half months, have gotten used to not hosting,” said Ted Taylor, Executive Director of Family Promise Arizona. “We have to get them back into the hosting mode because it is what makes our model work. So, the fear that is at congregations still remains. It is real and it is a very difficult start.”Family Promise says the average cost to rescue a family is ,000 and it takes as long as four months. For Family Promise, it costs ,000 and takes 43 days. While their new effort to prevent homelessness gets up and running, Family Promise says looming evictions require more community support than ever.So far, Family Promise has prevented 10 families from homelessness in Arizona. It hopes to reach 40 by the end of the year.Nationwide, the executive director says the effort to prevent homelessness could reduce the number of people needing a place to stay by 25%. 1445

Attorneys for Maria Butina and the Justice Department gave more signs Thursday morning they are negotiating a plea deal for the accused Russian spy.In a conference call with a federal judge in Washington, the attorneys said another upcoming hearing in the case should be canceled and that subpoenas planned for American University, where Butina was a graduate student, may be withdrawn by the end of this week. Both prosecutors and defense attorneys have previously indicated they were negotiating to end Butina's case.Butina was charged this summer for illegally acting as a foreign agent for Russia and accused of trying to create a back channel for Russia through activist groups, including the National Rifle Association. She is currently being held in solitary confinement at a Northern Virginia jail, her attorneys have said. So far, she has maintained her innocence, saying she was never a foreign agent and simply a foreign student studying in America. If Butina were to change her plea in the case from not guilty to guilty, she would likely return to Russia.Prosecutors previously told a court she was in touch with Russian backers and agents as she ingratiated herself with politically powerful Americans.The-CNN-Wire 1233
