SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Wildfire season is here and county officials want to make sure San Diegans are prepared. As summer heats up and brush dries out, Cal Fire is urging everyone to create a wildfire action plan. According to the agency, the plan should be familiar to all members of your household well in advance of a fire. This includes making an emergency supply kit and creating an evacuation plan. If you’re unsure how to start preparing a wildfire action plan, Cal Fire has some tips. Create an evacuation plan that includes:· A designated emergency meeting location outside the fire or hazard area. This is critical to determine who has safely evacuated from the affected area.· Several different escape routes from your home and community. Practice these often so everyone in your family is familiar in case of emergency.· Have an evacuation plan for pets and large animals such as horses and other livestock.· A Family Communication Plan that designates an out-of-area friend or relative as a point of contact to act as a single source of communication among family members in case of separation. (It is easier to call or message one person and let them contact others than to try and call everyone when phone, cell, and internet systems can be overloaded or limited during a disaster.) Be Prepared:· Have fire extinguishers on hand and train your family how to use them (check expiration dates regularly).· Ensure that your family knows where your gas, electric, and water main shut-off controls are located and how to safely shut them down in an emergency.· Assemble an Emergency Supply Kit for each person, as recommended by the American Red Cross. (See next section for details.)· Maintain a list of emergency contact numbers posted near your phone and in your emergency supply kit.· Keep an extra Emergency Supply Kit in your car in case you cannot get to your home because of fire or other emergency.· Have a portable radio or scanner so you can stay updated on the fire.· Tell your neighbors about Ready, Set, Go! and your Wildfire Action Plan. Cal Fire also offers tips on what to include in an emergency kit. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -  With three kids at home, including a newborn, managing a family budget is always a struggle for Theresa Washington and her husband. They're trying to survive on his Navy salary, which, some months, doesn't entirely cover everything."You try to balance everything and try to budget and hope that it will get through," Washington says.Theresa used to be in the Navy as well. She quit when daycare for the kids got too costly.RELATED: Rep. Susan Davis backs legislation making military families eligible for food aidOver the years, her family has moved from Florida to Minnesota to San Diego through Naval deployments and re-stationing. She says California is easily the most expensive place she's lived.Fortunately, in 2017, Washington found the Military Distribution Program through Jewish Family Service.Once a month, JFS does a food giveaway at Camp Pendleton and the Murphy Canyon military housing. Aside from proof of active military service, there are no eligibility requirements."Making this just for them, I think it shows them a little more dignity and allows them to access the services they need within their communities," says Sasha Escue, who runs the Food and Nutrition Program for JFS.The Military Distribution Program started ten years ago, as JFS and other groups began to notice the trend. At the Jewish Family Service food distribution, families can get fresh fruit and vegetables, diapers and frozen meat. They try to make sure the food they give away is nutritious and balanced. In 2017, JFS served 1,000 individual military families.As word gets around, they expect that number to rise."My friends and I remind each other every month," says Washington.According to the San Diego Hunger Coalition, 1 in 10 people who go to food banks has a military member in their family. They believe that number is even higher in San Diego where the cost of living can quickly eat through paychecks."These are community members who are making the ultimate commitment with their lives and their time," says Hunger Coalition Executive Director Anahid Brakke. "We should be paying enough that they don't have to go to food distribution."According to numbers provided by the Hunger Coalition, enlisted servicemen and women with under two years of service make between ,200 and ,500 per year. That should qualify them for government food assistance like WIC or SNAP. But, because their housing allowances are also factored into their annual income, many are over the federal poverty level limits to quality.Some people are trying to change that. Representative Susan Davis introduced H.R. 1078 in Congress, the Military Hunger Prevention Act. According to language in the bill, it's designed to exclude housing allowances from determining eligibility for federal assistance. It's currently in the House Subcommittee on Military Personnel.In the meantime, military advocates say the best way to help out is to donate to local food banks, like Feeding San Diego. It's a way to make sure military members can serve and their families can eat."It's amazing," says Washington. "We can't thank them enough for helping us." 3175

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While Michelin decided to postpone its annual award of stars to California restaurants this year due to the pandemic and wildfires, undercover eaters did find several "discoveries" across the state.The new-found culinary delights were announced as part of Michelin Guide's "Family Meal" livestream to celebrate the resilience of restaurants and raise money for the California Association of Food Banks.In San Diego, five restaurants pleasantly surprised guide inspectors were Tuetano Taqueria in San Ysidro, Morning Glory in Little Italy, Dija Mara in Oceanside, Soichi Sushi in University Heights, and Sushi Tadokoro in Old Town.Inspectors said Tuetano Taqueria Chef Priscilla Curiel’s guisados "are every inch the equal of Baja’s—down to the fair prices and hefty portions (and without the long traffic lines on your way home)." The guide also hailed the restaurant's beef birria that is topped with a bone filled with buttery marrow on top of the taco.Morning Glory's soufflé pancakes are "worth waking up for," according to the guide, and dishes like fried rice with pork belly and eggs and potatoes au gratin are "a great riff on tradition."Indonesian stop Dija Mara serves up creative cocktails and delicious nasi goreng (fried rice with shrimp, pork belly, chicken, and the yolk of a sunny egg) and charred eggplant with smoked tomato sambal and crispy fried shallots, inspectors said.Soichi impressed with its sushi offerings, including its pike mackerel, kampachi, and sea bass dishes. Michelin says Soichi's shirumono fish soup is also a must before trying out the restaurant's green tea ice cream.Inspectors say Sushi Tadokoro's omakase is a must-try, especially the sushi joint's oysters and scallops. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Two new charges have been filed in the case against a La Jolla restaurant owner accused of sexually assaulting multiple women.Authorities say five victims have now come forward claiming Daniel Dorado, 59, sexually assaulted them.The fifth victim came forward after last week’s arraignment, telling the San Diego Police Department about an incident that happened in 2014.RELATED: La Jolla restaurant owner accused of sexual assault makes first court appearance?Prosecutors say the assaults took place over a nine-year period beginning in 2009 and ending in January of 2018.Dorado pleaded not guilty earlier in April to 14 counts brought against him, including rape of an unconscious person.RELATED: Woman claims she was drugged during job interviewDorado was arrested in March. One of his accusers claimed she was drugged and raped by Dorado three years ago at his Bird Rock-area restaurant Voce del Mare.Prosecutors in the case say two victims were sexually assaulted at the restaurant while three others were assaulted elsewhere. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - When William Hauf looks out his kitchen window, he sees rows of patio furniture that won't fit anywhere else."I just had to leave that stacked up out there," he says. "And I've got boxes of books in my garage right now that are unopened and brand new. Books that I haven't even seen yet."They're leftovers from Hauf's former, more successful life.In March, he sold his estate in Santaluz for million. Hauf had to sell it after losing millions of dollars himself in real estate and travel investments. It's a key number because that's what San Diego Gas and Electric says he still owes them from his Santaluz home. Hauf got that roughly ,000 bill in March - an annual balance correction because the Santaluz home had solar, meaning he didn't have to pay monthly. SDG&E is now threatening to cut the electricity to his new home in Carlsbad if he doesn't pay the balance. "It's a nightmare, and I have no power to be able to confront this," Hauf said. SDG&E checked Hauf's meter in 2018, after a roughly ,000 annual bill. He said he hoped they would do more at the time. "They didn't investigate, they didn't identify, they didn't do an audit, they didn't do any of that," he said. Then came the ,000 whopper in March. In a statement, SDG&E noted that Hauf's bill worked out to 2 a month for the 7,600 square-foot Santaluz home. The company said it found no issues with the meter and that something in the home was being left on for long periods of time. SDG&E says it has advised Hauf to make sure his pool pump was not left running but Hauf said there's a big problem with that advice."There's no pool in the house," he said. "There's no swimming pool, there's no heater, there's no air conditioning."In other words, Hauf can't pinpoint what caused his annual bill to get to ,000 dollars, and he doesn't think SDG&E can either. A spokesman for SDG&E said the utility isn't always privy to the types of appliances customers have, but reiterated that Hauf's meter was functioning normally during that time. This is the utility's full statement:This solar customer received an annual true-up bill of ,111.46 for twelve months of energy use at his 7,600+ sq. foot home. If you average that out it would be approximately 2 per month. Over the past several years we have spoken with this customer regarding increasing energy usage and other billing related questions. In a review of his March 2018 bill, we indicated that something in the household was turned on and left on for periods of time.
