COVID-19 will continue to impact the housing market heading into 2021.If you're looking to buy, experts say the first few months of the year are the time to do it.A housing forecast out Wednesday from Realtor.com finds mortgage rates will stay low, but only for the first half of the year.“We expect mortgage rates to increase near 3.4% by the end of the year, which would in any other year be record lows, but following on the heels of 2020, 3.4% is up a bit, but still historically low broadly speaking,” said Danielle Hale, Chief Economist at Realtor.com.Home prices have gone up by double digit percentages over the last couple of months. Some of that is expected to slow down as mortgage rates go up.Realtor.com is forecasting just below a 6% increase in home prices for all of 2021, but affordability is going to be a growing concern.“The housing market has been historically challenging for first-time homebuyers, with prices rising as dramatically as they have in the second part of 2020, first-time homebuyers are seeing a bigger gap between what they need to bring to the market for a down payment and what existing homeowners have in the way of home equity to use to trade up,” said Hale.If you already own a home, you may be thinking about selling when you see what it's worth now.Sellers are expected to continue to have the upper hand throughout 2021, with more buyers than homes for sale.You may see more competition with home construction ramping up, leading to more options available.“For existing homeowners, in particular who want to stay up in their home, the fact that we have still low mortgage rates in 2021 creates opportunities for them to consider remodeling to make their home a more suitable place for them to age in place,” said Hale.Another trend that's expected to continue in 2021 is interest in the suburbs. People have been moving out of cities as they're working remotely. Hale says the rising home prices and higher interest rates in 2021 could drive this trend as well. 2014

Cleanup is underway in Louisiana and southeastern Texas after one of the strongest hurricanes to ever make landfall in the area caused extensive damage and flooding on Thursday.Reports Thursday indicated that Hurricane Laura killed six people, including a 14-year-old girl. About 200,000 people in Texas are also without power, including 94 percent of people in Orange County, a county bordering Louisiana.Among the areas hardest hit by Laura was Lake Charles, a city in southwest Louisiana. Though it's located about 40 miles inland, massive storm surge and heavy rain have caused extensive flooding in the area. Photos show homes underwater and structures blown over.Portions of I-10 west of Lake Charles remain closed as of Friday morning as workers attempt to clear debris from the expressway.On Thursday, President Donald Trump said he would visit Louisiana to survey damage over the weekend. 1345

CORONADO (KGTV) - The 200 million dollar project is being called the "Reimagination" of the Hotel del Coronado. The plans have been in the works for almost 20 years according to Coronado resident Felicia Bell, "17 years ago in 2002 when it was first presented to our community and the California Coastal Commission". Bell tells 10News the Hotel del holds a special place in everyone's heart, "my two daughters were married there".The beachfront resort just celebrated its 130th anniversary. The history makes it much more than a resort to the community, "this represents our history here in Coronado this is the key to the rest of the whole island" Kitt Walker tells 10News. Walker and her husband have lived in Coronado for years and say it's a staple piece for the community, "if it hadn’t been for the hotel del, Coronado wouldn’t even be here to speak of". In fact, Richard Walker gave walking tours of the resort for years. They both have ties close to the resort. They're looking forward to the repairs in order to preserve the resort for many more years to come. The first phase of the project includes the first of two underground parking structures. The entire project also includes adding 142 new guest rooms, a new Conference Center and repairs to the roof. The entire project is expected to be complete by the end of 2021. Bell tells 10News the construction could cause some headaches but they'll be worth it, "which will be noisy dusty dirty incovienent but at the end I think it will be a beautiful project". Many in the community say it's well overdue and a small price to pay to keep the Hotel del around for another 100 years, "if it hadn’t been for the Hotel del, Coronado wouldn’t even be here to speak of" Walker tells 10News. 1755

  

COLLIER COUNTY, Fla — Deputies say a trip to the ice cream store ended with a man getting scooped up by police for DUI.Deputies say 23-year-old Josh Verrot faces several charges, including DUI, battery on a first-responder and fraud. According to a Collier County Sheriff's arrest report, he was arrested Sunday evening outside the Royal Scoop ice cream shop on 8th street in the Vanderbilt Lakes community.Witnesses say that Verrot was driving recklessly in a car with two flat front tires when he pulled into the ice cream shop parking lot and went inside.  As he came out with ice cream, he heard approaching sirens and fled on foot.Deputies located him behind the store and say he refused to do sobriety tests. On the way to the hospital he reportedly bit a firefighter's finger, repeatedly spit toward authorities and yelled “blah-blah-blah” while authorities communicated with him.He also provided his brother's name when asked to identify himself.He's due in court at the end of the month. 1024

  

Considered the coronavirus holy grail, antibodies are believed to give us some level of immunity from the virus. They form after a person fights off COVID-19 and can be detected through a serological test, better known as an antibody test. "There are some really great companies building antibody tests, and there are some not so great, bad actors, building antibody tests. So you have to be really careful," says Jon Carder, co-founder and CEO of Vessel, a San Diego company created four years ago to provide in-home wellness tests. Early in the pandemic, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration allowed these tests to be sold and distributed without federal review, as long as the company notified the FDA it was offering a test, performed self-validation studies, and included a disclaimer on the test results. The FDA is now cracking down on the bad actors, creating a list of tests that should no longer be distributed. Only a handful of manufacturers have been granted FDA Emergency Use Authorization, meeting a certain threshold for accuracy.Carder says states and even countries have been fooled by the bad actors, purchasing inadequate tests. "We were talking to a city government, a big city, and were blown away when we got a response that they were thinking about buying antibody tests from a certain manufacture who had claimed they were FDA approved. And the state had sort of taken their word for it, and they weren't," said Carder. Vessel had been preparing to release its in-home wellness tracker, which tests for health markers like vitamins, minerals, toxins, and cortisol. When the pandemic hit, the company adapted its technology to be used in the fight against COVID-19. "We take existing antibody tests, the good ones, the ones that are accurate and that the FDA has approved for emergency use, and we enable those to be done safely and accurately at home," said Carder. They've created a kit with step-by-step instructions to do the blood test at home. The test card is then scanned through the Vessel app and provides results from a medical professional within a half-hour. The FDA has already approved in-home tests to diagnose active infections – but Carder says the sample must be sent to a lab, and the user must have symptoms or another qualification to get one. And he says they can be costly. "Ours could be one of the first, or the first, antibody test done at home, no lab needed," said Carder. Just this week, the FDA issued three warning letters to companies making false claims on their in-home antibody tests.Vessel has completed its usability studies and is now in clinical trials with the FDA. "Our job is to prove it can be done safely at home and to show that via clinical trials. The FDA really makes the call if they're going to enable antibody testing at home," said Carder. He says the test would be cost-effective, anywhere from -, or around with medical consultation. If approved by the FDA, Carder estimates millions of people could be tested within the first few months. "There's something really great about the peace-of-mind that comes from doing a test, and that may be one of the biggest benefits," said Carder. But while the FDA is only approving the most accurate tests, none are 100 percent accurate and could still lead to false positives. 3314
