"Our exchanges and cooperation in all fields have been growing steadily and exchanges at the top and other levels have increased, " Lan noted.He said that China stands ready to work with Canada, with a strategic and long-term perspective, to seize the opportunity brought by the 40th anniversary to review the past and plan for the future, and jointly forge an even better future.On the same occasion, Canadian Speaker of the Senate Noel Kinsella said it is encouraging to see the two countries continuing to work together in a constructive and cooperative manner."The fact that we were able to put aside our differences at the height of the Cold War and work together for a better future makes me believe that our partnership can withstand the most difficult challenges that might come our way," he said.The Speaker also praised the hard-working Chinese immigrants who endured difficult conditions long before the two countries established diplomatic ties, as they helped build the Canadian Pacific Railway, which played a critical role in history.On the eve of the concert, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper also sent a greeting message, saying that the wonderful evening of beautiful music was a great opportunity to share Chinese culture with Canadians as more than a billion people around the world welcomed the Year of the Tiger."It is a time of great expectations and an occasion to recognize the significant contributions of Chinese Canadians," Harper added.Established in 1957, the CBCO has performed at Konzerthaus Berlin, Lincoln Center, John F. Kennedy Center and Moscow Tchaikovsky Concert Hall over the past five decades. Its world- class Chinese New Year Concert has also become a classic event at the Golden Hall of Vienna since 2003. This is the Orchestra's first visit to Canada.

HONG KONG, Feb. 15 (Xinhua) -- Over 20,000 people gathered on both sides of Hong Kong's Victoria Harbor to watch a 23-minute firework show Monday evening, as the city is unwrapping various festive activities to celebrate the year of the Tiger.The show began at 8 pm local time (1200 GMT) despite heavy fog and light showers.Spectators cheered and shouted as the Arabic number "eight" appeared in the sky, followed by patterns resembling fish. Fireworks designers explained that the number eight shares the same pronunciation with the word "Fa" which means striking gold while the word "fish" sounds the same with "surplus" in Cantonese.For Hong Kong residents who tend to believe that lucky signs and lucky-sounding words do actually bring in luck, they are delighted at the show, which also include patters similar to the shape of the Chinese traditional gold ingot and red Chinese character "Ji" which means auspiciousness.The Lunar New Year firework show has become an annual event since it lit up the sky above the Victoria Harbor for the first time during the Lunar New Year in 1982.Sponsors of the event said this year's extravaganza costs more that 3 million HK dollars (about 400,000 U.S. dollars ), but they insist the expenditure worthwhile as it brings laughter and joy to Hong Kong citizens at the begining of a new year.

BEIJING, March 2 (Xinhua) -- China on Tuesday urged the United States to work to push bilateral ties back to normal track as two senior U.S. diplomats came to Beijing with hope to ease tensions between the two countries.U.S. Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg and National Security Council Senior Director for Asian Affairs Jeffrey Bader began their visit in Beijing from Tuesday to Thursday before going to Japan.China's foreign ministry has so far given few details about the visit. The U.S. embassy in China has no plan to hold a press conference as usual."We will have a press release as soon as we get further information about the detailed arrangements," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said, declining to disclose whom the two U.S. diplomats will meet.But Qin repeated at the regular news briefing that the responsibility of the setback of the Sino-U.S. relations lay with the U.S. administration."We urge the U.S. side to earnestly observe the principles laid down in the three Sino-U.S. joint communiques and their joint statement, respect China's core interests and properly handle sensitive issues, and work with the Chinese side to push relations back on a healthy and normal track," Qin said.The United States angered China with its decision to sell arms to Taiwan and President Barack Obama's meeting with the ** Lama regardless of China's objections. BEIJING, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese police nationwide were urged Friday to tighten security and step up safety overhaul during the Chinese Lunar New Year and be "ready to handle emergencies to prevent serious accidents."A circular from the Ministry of Public Security told local police authorities to increase scrutiny of fireworks parties, trade fairs, lantern shows, and temple fairs during the Spring Festival holiday which starts Saturday.It said the police should assist in keeping public and traffic order around large events' venues and be ready to handle crime and emergencies.Efforts should be made to strengthen security measures around train stations. Police authorities must release "safety tips" to the public through radio, newspapers and cell phone messages, it said.More than 10,000 large events, including traditional temple fairs, will be held across the country during the seven-day holiday, with more than 320 events expected to attract more than 10,000 people each.The latest ministry statistics show police solved nearly 1,200 homicide cases and 915 human trafficking cases last month.Police also arrested nearly 470 suspects for using telephones to scam or defraud people in January, saving 3.45 million yuan (507,000 U.S. dollars) in economic losses.Last month, the police busted nearly 2,000 bases for illegal fireworks' manufacture, sale, or transportation.The Spring Festival, or the Lunar New Year, falls on Sunday. It is the most important annual Chinese festival, with family reunions, much fun and plenty of eating.
