SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego veteran and father is defending his son's right to sit during the national anthem.Ray Everett is responding to a letter sent to Lincoln High School's principal, complaining that students on the basketball team were sitting and talking during the national anthem.The man who wrote the letter is a U.S. Air Force veteran and grandfather to a player on the opposing team. Another parent who was offended used her phone to film the students sitting."At the end of the day our students do not have to stand," said Everett. "But you will not make them feel like they did something wrong. They did not harm anyone and they did not break the law."Everett was in the U.S. Army for 15 years. He says he served his country in order to protect the rights of Americans, including the right to sit during the national anthem.Everett's brother-in-law, Antoine Jarvis, says while he was offended by the letter he respects everyone's right to their own opinion. "I think that the biggest challenge in voicing your opinion is when you're close-minded to other's opinions," said Jarvis. "When you're close-minded to their beliefs."Jarvis says he no longer stands during the national anthem after learning more about its history. He only asks that others respect his right to do so.The principal of Lincoln High School, a veteran himself, has been responsive to complaints and plans to sit down with the veteran who wrote the letter about the student's actions.On Thursday the San Diego Unified School District sent a statement to 10News:Public school districts do not have the authority to require students to observe patriotic or religious rituals in the classroom or at school functions. We believe in our students right to free-speech, but also encourage students to be respectful in the way they choose to exercise their rights.School Administration is reaching out to the students involved and taking the opportunity to use this as a teachable moment. 1986

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Activists with 'March Without Borders' are ready to welcome migrants from Central America heading to the United States with the migrant caravan.The supporters began an eight-day march from Los Angeles on April 22 and plan to meet the migrants at the San Ysidro Port of Entry on Sunday.On Saturday they marched throughout San Diego, beginning from Centro Cultural de la Raza in Balboa Park and ending in Chicano Park. Migrants are expected to ask for asylum at the San Ysidro Port of Entry sometime Sunday morning. 546

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A sudden avalanche Friday buried five guests at a Northern California ski resort, including a San Diego native and his wife.Evan Huck and his wife, Kahlynn, were among the five skiers and boarders rescued after an avalanche buried a portion of Squaw Valley Ski Resort near Lake Tahoe. Huck grew up on Coronado, his parents told 10News, and had recently married Kahlynn.The pair escaped unscathed, though hectic moments caught on video after the incident show the drastic effort to make sure things didn't end worse.10News?live?weather conditionsKahlynn and others were captured afterward frantically digging Huck out of the mountain of snow, whose beard was the only part of him peeking through.  While Huck was reportedly knocked unconscious, he was able to snowboard down the mountain on his own afterward. It took about 5 minutes to dig him out.Two of the five caught in the sudden avalanche were injured, one with a serious lower-body injury, according to Placer County Sheriff's Department. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A South Bay high school was placed on lockdown while police searched a vehicle outside the campus.San Diego Police placed Southwest High School under lockdown while officers searched a vehicle they stopped on Hollister Street, just outside campus.Police said the traffic stop was a result of someone reporting they saw a gun. The suspected vehicle was located and pulled over.Southwest High was placed on lockdown as a precaution and police said the campus wasn't being threatened - the traffic stop just happened to occur outside the school property.Police found a BB gun inside the vehicle. No shots were fired and no one was injured.The lockdown was later lifted.Police said they encourage anyone who thinks they see a weapon to report it to authorities. 799

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Across the county, doorbell camera video has caught 'grinches' behaving badly."Upsetting and makes me feel violated," said Catherine Butler, who lives on Palm Avenue in La Mesa.When Butler woke up Wednesday morning, she came upon a mess outside her home. A wreath hanging on the side of her home was on the ground. A lighted garland was cut and left in her yard. It's not right and it's very grinchy," said Butler.Surveillance video reveals the culprit: a man walking barefoot on her patio railing, yanking down her lights. There have been a plethora of videos posted this week of package thieves throughout the county, likely targeting Christmas presents. In Chula Vista, a video posted on the Neighbors App by Ring shows a man wrangling a large holiday wreath off a front door.
