There's a storm on the way that's going to remind Midwesterners that winter's never over till it's over.The potential is there for a "bomb cyclone" to impact the Plains this week. That's an area of low pressure that drops 24 millibars in 24 hours -- aka a potent, rapidly intensifying storm system.This would be the second time in less than a month a storm of this magnitude has developed in the Plains. It's rare enough to have one form inland, much less two.Typically we see "bomb cyclones" form off the US East Coast in the form of nor'easters.Right now the forecast models have the storm teetering on the edge of bomb-cyclone criteria. Either way, this storm is forecast to unleash a variety of wild weather this week.Blizzard conditions likely for manyThis powerful storm is forecast to develop Tuesday in the Rockies, where it will rapidly intensify and bring blizzard conditions to the Plains on Wednesday.Overnight temperatures in the Plains will drop nearly 40 degrees in just 12 hours, including in Denver -- which is expecting a high of 80 degrees Tuesday and blizzard conditions by Wednesday night.Winter storm warnings and watches stretch from the Rockies to the Great Lakes.There are blizzard warnings for almost 4 million people from eastern Colorado to southwestern Minnesota. Up to 2 feet of snow will be possible with wind gusts of 45-55 mph across South Dakota and Nebraska, along with white-out conditions.A potentially historic winter stormThursday the storm will reach the Midwest, bringing with it the heavy snow and wind. Two rural town school districts in the United States were shut down early for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend due to a fast-spreading stomach virus causing an abnormally high number of absences.Mesa County Valley School District officials in Grand Junction, Colorado, closed the school district to decontaminate November 20, the Wednesday before the week of Thanksgiving. A high number of students were increasingly calling out sick due to an illness going around. “Before the school district shut down, we were aware of at least 13 schools within (Mesa County Valley) School District 51 that had increased absenteeism levels due to illness and that number was growing,” district officials said on a Facebook live video, addressing the problem. “What we’re suspecting at this time is it’s very much acting like a norovirus.”On November 25, Greater Albany Public Schools in Albany, Oregon, announced a district-wide closure for similar reasons — norovirus was going around causing high levels of absences.“It spreads really like wildfire through a community,” said Dr. Chris Nyquist, the medical director of infection prevention and control at Children’s Hospital Colorado. “I think norovirus is one of those viruses that comes up in wintertime often when you have small communities, thinking about schools, where a lot of kids are together. It’s very contagious, spreads quickly.”Norovirus symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea and nausea that can last days.“The best method that these schools have done, in conjunction with talking to their health department, is to really shut down and do extensive cleaning,” Nyquist said.Norovirus can transfer easily through close contact, and symptoms start as soon as two hours later. In small communities like Grand Junction or Albany, an outbreak like this can have a large impact.“The thing that’s really special and unique about rural Colorado is that schools are often time the hub of the community,” said Elaine Belansky, the executive director for the Center for Rural Health and Education at the University of Denver. “They don’t have that many boots on the ground to address big challenges like this.”But those communities are doing what they can to stop illness from spreading just as the holidays begin. When Don Grundmann took the podium to boos and jeers at a Modesto City Council meeting Wednesday, he appeared angry that some people had called his efforts to organize a "straight pride" event in the California city racist.He singled out Councilmember Kristi Ah You, accusing her of "pulling the race card" and allegedly inflaming tensions by "attacking us as racists."Then he appeared to make a slip of the tongue."We haven't done anything," he said. VANCOUVER, Wash. – Police in Vancouver, Washington, said Wednesday a missing teenager was killed by a man after he learned she was transgender.The family of 17-year-old Nikki Kuhnhausen reported her missing in June, telling police they hadn't heard from her since June 5.This month, investigators say, a person walking in the heavily wooded area of Larch Mountain near Vancouver found a skull, and searches by the Clark County Sheriff's Office and Clark County Search and Rescue yielded more human remains.
