PARKLAND, Fla. – The death penalty case against Nikolas Cruz in the 2018 massacre at a Florida high school remains in limbo.At a brief hearing Tuesday, no decisions were made on a trial date amid continuing obstacles because of the coronavirus pandemic. Cruz's defense lawyers say they have almost no access to him in jail, nor do defense experts they insist must see him to build a case."We're in a worldwide pandemic. Satz, the state attorney, is leaving his post after 44 years. There are new candidates to replace Satz, including Democrat Harold Pryor who, if elected in November, would be the first Black state attorney in Broward County history.Pryor has not commented directly on the Cruz case but, in general, has said he personally opposes the death penalty. Pryor has the support of the county mayor, Dale V.C. Holness.His opponent on the Republican side is Gregg Rossman, a veteran former homicide prosector who handled some of Broward County's biggest murder cases. He is now in private practice.Broward County is one of the most heavily Democratic places in the country.Neither have said exactly what they would do with Cruz, as it's an ongoing case and they are not in office. (KGTV) -- A brush fire erupted in the north San Diego County community of Pauma Valley Tuesday afternoon, sending a plume of thick, white smoke into the atmosphere.The fire broke out on the 13800 block of Highway 76 near Pala Road northeast of Escondido around 2:50 p.m. According to Cal Fire, the flames have scorched at least 50 acres.Cal Fire sent an aircraft to help fight the fire. No structures were threatened in the fire. Winds in the area Tuesday could reach 14 miles per hour before winding down later this evening. The humidity, which is currently at 50 percent, should help firefighters fight the blaze. The fire is now 15 percent contained.  740

Paying rent is increasingly a struggle for many Americans, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.Workers need to make almost an hour on average to afford a modest 1-bedroom apartment and about an hour for a 2-bedroom, according to a new report by the National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC).“So, if it was the case before that millions of low wage workers were struggling to afford their rent, we anticipate that many more will be unable to now and may not be able to hold onto their homes,” said Dan Threet, an NLIHC research analyst.It’s not just a large metro area problem either. In almost every county nationwide, a full-time minimum wage job isn't enough to cover a 1-bedroom apartment.And when it comes to disparities, the numbers tell the story. About 44% of Black Americans and 42% of Latinx are rent burdened, meaning they spend more than 30% of their income on housing. Photographer Matthew Dippel captured a once-in-a-lifetime photo earlier this month at Yosemite National Park, capturing the moment of what appears to be a marriage proposal. Dippel's photo shows the proposal taking place on a cliff, with the sun shining in the background. Now Dippel is hoping to find the couple in the photo. "Alright internet I need your help," Dippel said. "Help me find these two. This was taken at Taft Point, in Yosemite National Park on October 6th, 2018. I took this photo and would love for them to find it.Since posting the photo on Facebook last week, Dippel has had a few false leads. According to Dippel's Twitter account, those leads led nowhere. As of Tuesday, Dippel has been unsuccessful in finding the couple.  798

PALA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A family dog missing after a deadly crash in Pauma Valley Friday was reunited with its family after being located by firefighters Sunday.Cal fire said firefighters and the San Diego County Department of Animal Services returned to the scene after the crash in an effort to locate the dog.“After lots of hiking through thick brush, the mission was a success and the family was reunited with their pet,” Cal Fire said.“We're with our community members on some of their worst days...and we'll always be there, doing everything we can help make things better,” the agency continued.The crash happened early Friday morning, killing a mother and injuring her 11-year-old son and his father.Crews responded to the scene of the crash after the vehicle was found overturned on an embankment near State Route 76 between Palomar Mountain and Oceanside.The man and child are expected to recover. 914
